    SA: The Last Round

"So, what do you think, Corejo?" Wanderer D asked, politely showing off the stack of papers in his claw.

The burlap sack with the printed (in color!) face of Corejo remained silent.

"I see, yes, yes!" Wanderer D cackled. "Ahahaha! Yes! I agree! This story should do fine! So, who's reviewing it? RT?"

The sack that had the picture of RTStephens on it tilted just enough for a single potato to roll onto the table.

"And we have two! Alright, team, I expect you all to figure out who's doing the next one, okay? Let's not keep the readers waiting!" He glanced expectantly at the several sacks with pictures around him. "Alright! Dismissed."

    "Sir?"

"Ah, intern. Is that my coffee?" Wanderer D took the proffered mug and downed the contents in one go. "Excellent! No time to rest! We have to edit what the guys just handed to me."

The Dodge Junction train ramp was not where Floydien expected to be part of a reunion.

He especially didn’t expect it to happen four times in a row.

“Wait, Winter? What are you doing here?”

Winter’s eyebrows raised. “On Summer vacation. What about you?”

    “Uh, same.”

    “Guys!”

The two Angels looked to where the voice came from. Cynewulf came running up to them, a wide brimmed sunhat and sunglasses adorning her head. “Fancy meeting you two here!”

Floydien scratched his head. “Same. Are you on vacation too?”

“Yep! Had a blast down on the Horseshoe Bay coast.”

    “Well, ain’t this something!”

All turned to the fourth voice. Knight strode up, his body decked out in fishing gear, complete with a fishing pole balanced over his shoulder. “Haven’t seen so many of us in one spot since vacation started.”

Winter and Knight stared out at the bleak townscape. All around them, the fires raged unchecked as Ponyville's former occupants stumbled mindlessly about, their undead faces ravaged by rot and decay as they moaned for sustenance. Knight turned to Winter.

    "Ready to go?"

Winter nodded and shifted a backpack. "Got everything with me. I guess it's now or never."

Knight gave a wry smile. "That's the spirit. You do have your reviews, right?"

"Of course!" he said, patting his chest. "Right here."

Knight nodded and said, "Alright, here's the plan: we stick to the shadows as much as possible. From what I can tell, their eyesight isn't that good, but their sense of smell is excellent. We just have to stay upwind."

“I see. Alright, I’ll let him know.”

Intern twisted a dial on the small mechanical piece attached to his ear, retracting a blue, see-through visor from across his face. He turned to Floydien, crossing his arms. “It’s confirmed. Generation 5 is on its way. Season 2 of Pony Life is just around the corner. And the series finale of Equestria Girls was scrapped for a holiday special.”

Floydien lifted an eyebrow. “And, what does that mean for us?”

Over their heads the flak guns peppered the sky. The planes roared and sputtered. The clouds were dark, heavy with the child that was war. It was all noise.

Cynewulf looked around the bend. “You know, I’ve been reading old fics. Remember Arrow 18?”

Floydien slipped—a Floydien slipped—One Floydien came through the fractured time in the lower levels of the Sprawling Complex. “Uh, human in Equestria?”

“Yeah. You know, we were probably too mean about those.”

“They were terrible. I mean some of them. I guess a lot of everything is terrible.”

“Well, yes. But anyway, I was reading it, and it occurred to me that what I liked about it was that it felt optimistic in the way that Star Trek was optimistic. It felt naive, but in a way one wanted to emulate. To regress back into it.”

    “Uh, that sounds nice?”

    “Okay, Winter, hit it!”

Winter pulled a lever that ignited a rocket placed underneath the communal Christmas Tree. The tree blasted through a cylindrical hole and out into the skies beyond. It only took seconds for the tree to become a tiny red dot against the blue sky.

Winter stepped away from the control panel and down to where Intern was standing behind a fifty-five millimeter thick glass wall. “We could have just picked up the base and tossed it in the garbage bin outside, you know.”

Intern scoffed. “Yeah, we could, or we can go over the top in a comedic and entertaining manner that leads into our reviews.”

    “You’re getting all meta, now.”

    “Exactly! On to the reviews!”

For the first time in the year that he worked there, FanficFan finally experienced quiet in the Seattle’s Angels Compound. All the other reviewers had gone home for the holidays, leaving him and Intern to submit the last round of reviews of the year. However, with Intern off on an errand, FanficFan was left alone.

With stories ready to be read by his partner, all the reviewer could really do was wander around the empty building, taking in all the holiday decorations left behind from the Office Christmas Party a few days prior, like office space holiday knick-knacks, lights strown about the ceiling and wreaths on nearly every door. Plus, there was some leftover cookies and egg nog, so that was nice.

Cynewulf lay in a grassy field. This was a curious occurrence, as the Seattle Angel’s Dyson Sphere-esque compound basement labyrinth did not usually have grass.

But like she had many times before, she’d been teleported here, and whether or not the sky above her was real or not, she didn’t mind. The grass was nice, and the wind was nice, and whatever happened happened.
    f

There was a great crash and Corejo stumbled into the grass to her right.

“Oh, god, are we out? How did—”

“No clue. I suspect that it’ll just take us back anyhow. Did you have the reviews? The machine came for me a few days ago, so I’ve got mine.”

“I… Uh, I was late. I mean, we both are, unless you’ve been here for days.”

Winter peered cautiously out the corner of the broken window, surveying the damage outside. He turned to his companion.

"Looks like we're trapped in here," he said quietly.

Intern grunted and adjusted the bandage on his arm. "Nothing we haven't gone through before." He looked up at Winter. "Got your reviews?"

Winter nodded and patted his chest pocket. "Right here, where they're safe." He turned and looked once more out the window. "Now, it's simply a matter of getting through all those ponies." Winter shuddered as he took in the horrors before him.

Matthew stumbled through the basement, crouching low to avoid all the pipes on the ceiling. Floydien hadn’t told him much, just that it was extremely important, had nothing to do with Intern, and to take the last fire door on the left.

After what seemed like eternity in an instant, Matthew finally came to said fire door, damp with sweat and condensation. He carefully undid the latch and opened it with one arm raised just in case of any traps. Only to be greeted with the sounds of maniacal but joyous laughter as he spotted Floydien sitting in the center of the room surrounded by thousands of stacks of papers.

“I found it!” Floydien said, tossing a stapled pack of papers to Matthew. “I finally found the answer. The answer to all of our questions. To our very existence!”

AND NOW, WITHOUT FURTHER ADO... STORIES!

ACTION/ADVENTURE

PR Recommendation: The story of Scootaloo as an underdog in a race against the very best pegasi in Equestria, this story does an excellent job of not only communicating the stakes to the audience, but also of justifying Scootaloo's behavior and mentality. Her jet-powered suit is the only way she can fly, so it means much more to her than just winning a race - if she doesn't have the bits, the skies might be lost to her forever.

But what really makes this story memorable is the description of the race. I haven't read many stories about races that really worked well as action scenes, but this story does a great job of sucking the audience into the race next to Scootaloo as she jets her way through. Action sequences can be hard to pull off well in text, but this story does an excellent job of getting us involved in the action and seeing and understanding what is going on. —Titanium Dragon

DRAMA

PR Recommendation: Trixie suffers from PTSD and terrible nightmares. She can’t escape from Tirek – he’s there all the time.

She can’t escape from Twilight. She likes her. She hates her. Twilight is her friend. Twilight is the worst!

And through it all, Trixie’s garbled thoughts run, babbling along in a stream of consciousness as her mind flashes from thought to thought, reminders of the past, reminders of her loneliness, her struggle to reach out for help, and her fears of everypony turning their back on her because the Great and Powerful Trixie is really worthless.

I'm not ordinarily a fan of stream-of-consciousness type stuff, but this story did a good job of using it, keeping focused on the core idea and Trixie's internal conflicts. This leads to a rather clever bit at the end which I almost missed the first time I read it, but which has stuck with me since then as being a very clever use of Trixie's voice.

Her self-loathing and psychological drama, and the question of how much of what she is remembering is real, serves to hook the reader and bring them on for the ride through the conclusion. To this day, I'm not sure if I enjoyed the ride, but I cannot deny being engaged. —Titanium Dragon

ROMANCE

PR Recommendation: This is one of the best fanfictions I have ever read. I'd like to leave this recommendation at that, because I fear that more words will do it less justice, but I suppose I should get into specifics, so here goes:

This story shows the true power of the "Alternate Universe" concept. In this steampunk Equestria, the Mane Six are all obviously different in profession and personality, yet their canon selves shine through brilliantly. Watching Royal Philosopher Twilight Sparkle befriend each of them in turn is a joy of a read.

In fact, though this story is a romance, the platonic aspect almost eclipses (hee hee) the romance with the Mare in the Moon, and perhaps would... except for how the romance is also done astonishingly well. Twilight's faltering, labored attempts to bridge the vacuum of space with whatever communication she can manage are just as much fun to read as the friend-making.

The dialogue is witty, the narration likewise, the story moves along at a perfect pace... I could go on, but I'd end up writing a chapter myself. So let me simply reiterate my first point: that this is one of the best fanfictions I have ever read. —R5h

COMEDY

PR Recommendation: Have you ever wondered how exactly Tirek escaped Tartarus, and thought "his guard dog ran away" wasn't a complete enough explanation? Well, wonder no more, because Better Lairs and Landscaping will tell you... er... probably not how he did it. Disregard the above: you should keep wondering.

In all seriousness, the idea that Tirek's magazine subscription not only helped him bring doom upon Equestria, but gave him an aesthetic addiction, is exactly the right level of absurd. The clash between his stoic nature and the triviality of landscaping (followed by the surprising harmony thereof) is a nice source of humor, one that carries the piece well. Perhaps it's not bust-your-gut funny, but then again that's not the intent: the humor is subtler, quieter. And it manages to make Tirek funny in a surprisingly in-character way, so points for that.

Basically, if you're looking for a humorous way to pass a few minutes of your time, then I heartily recommend this story. —R5h

SLICE OF LIFE

PR Recommendation: Friendly Correspondence is a snapshot within a snapshot of a moment in the show that truly got the ball rolling for Twilight Sparkle. There's so much going on in here that I almost didn't believe it had only taken me five minutes to read; the depth of emotion within surprised me like I'd trodden into an innocuous puddle and sank beneath the surface.

This is season one Celestia at her most human: vulnerable and unexpectedly fragile. I was glad to be able to add this scene to my own headcanon, which I personally can't say very often at all. But there's another great surprise in the form of how well Pascoite manages to portray Philomena as a strong supporting character; this is considerably more impressive again considering she has no real "dialogue" to speak of.

As well as a touching portrayal of a ruler and her companion, the story also includes a plethora of clever show tie-ins with other events (for example, those who really pay attention might just find a clever, subtle connection to that "other world"). Knowing how to add weight to even the smallest of actions in the show is just one of many things Pascoite excels at.

Stories like Friendly Correspondence are shining examples of how to make a mountain out of a molehill in a positive way, while still retaining its molehill size.

HUMAN

PR Recommendation: Crossovers are hard. Requiring the reader have a working knowledge of two often disparate worlds and be willing to find out what happens when they collide is inherently risky. When the author dares to throw romance into mix too, the danger level approaches Phil Coulson’s day job.

In A Puzzle Unsolved, Present Perfect dares to take that risk, and he absolutely makes it work. His portrayal of Octavia, a character with countless fandom-given traits and quirks, is instantly relatable and recognizable, even while on a quiet date with the director of S.H.I.E.L.D.

For those of you looking for a good crossover, you’ve found one. For those of you who, like me, run away screaming at the mere mention of the word, stick around and give this one a chance. This isn’t a quick-and-dirty conglomeration of two wildly different worlds, this is a story of two kindred souls that love music, but also have secrets to keep. —BlazzingInferno
