Episode Discussion » S6E5 - Gauntlet of Fire · 3:30pm Apr 16th, 2016

It's an episode that sounds an awful lot like my time in Dark Souls this week.

Hooray for Spike!

Spike episode..... F*CK YEAH

Watch out, here comes Werespike!

Stop the bats! Stop the bats!

derpicdn.net/img/2016/4/16/1133167/large.jpg

Make them go and not come back!

All this time I've called them the Dragons'-Land.

I immediately love this episode forever.

I started humming the Pokemon Evolution theme once everything started glowing

Celestia. For once. Just once.

Go in and hand them their asses on a platter.

Please.

Okay, time to revise our dragon headcanons.

Okay Spike, and if you become Dragon Lord, what the hell are you going to do with that title? :unsuresweetie:

3874092

Keep it from all the wretched dragons who would attempt to screw Equestria. :pinkiehappy:

AGH THIS EPISODE IS THE BEST

A good Spike episode what?

Talking about Dark Souls. This gauntlet seems like Sen's Fortress

Good episode so far. All this worldbuilding and so forth.

Who wins this round?

There seems to be a somewhat annoying, recurring thing of nobody doing the friendship thing but Equestria. Not the griffons, not the changelings, not even dragons.

Still thinking back to Celestia: "Going to Dragonland? Good luck faithful student, you're on your own."

:trollestia:

AWESOME CREDIT MUSIC!!

That hug at the end, though.

Liked the episode. Spike wasn't useless or incompetent and Twilight and Rarity didn't even come close to overshadowing Spike. Ember was a fun character and Garble got humiliated.

Okay, Twilight could not defend herself against Garble at all for some reason, and she's the friggin' Princess of Magic!

How big was the idiot ball she was carrying, again?

That episode was...

YES.

FUCK YES.

What a fun ride that was.

So, uh, why were all the dragons the size of the teenager ones like Garble? Were all the actual adult dragons (like the ones in Owl's Well That Ends Well and Dragonshy) too lazy to show up?

...someone write a fic of Torch being a pretender who can only get the children to follow his orders, and only claims he's the Dragon Lord because no other adults actually care.

3874112 Yep. In come the Ember-Spike ships.

Great world building, an excellent Spike Episode, and a absolutely hilarious moment with Luna and Celestia at the start definitely makes this one of the better ones so far this season. IMHO

I like it! World Building and a nice Spike episode.

This was a good one.

A good Spike episode for once? Someone check hell's thermometer.

3874122 Ehh, they were spectating, disintegrating Garble would have interfered with the competition.

Another Good Spike episode, I think they are getting better and the return of Garble was quite a surprise as well.

All I can say is this: Spike's got a girlfriend! Spike's got a girlfriend!

I mean it! This is the second serious shippy hint in successive episodes! Add on to that Starlight and Suburst in the permiere, Season Six is turning into Shipping City! I predict a long and healthy relationship between this fandom and SpEmber!

That aside, it was good to see Spike take the lead with Twilight and Rarity only as observers. Seeing Garble again was good, as was seeing him repeatedly humiliated and slapped down by both Ember and Spike. I do hope that he learns something from this!

Overall, the best episode of Season Six so far - I'm rating this at 8/10!

Not all dragons are meant to be brutes. I think Spike did good out there.

3874107

You mean Sen's Funhouse?

Other than Twilight and Rarity being largely superfluous, a great episode.

We got
Sunburst and Starlight, Applebloom from last week, and now Spike and Ember.

We're gonna be up to our necks in ship fics.

What's next?

3874122 She always holds a big idiot ball when she's in a fight. She doesn't see fighting as more than point, shoot, and if that doesn't work, shoot harder. Also, dragons might have a slight immunity to damage. I mean how else do you explain Spike's ability to take so much abuse?

That was probably the very best spike episode.

This was Spike at his most Heroic. To me a hero is defined by three things. How selfless they are in the face of a great triumph, how much courage they have against adversity, and most importantly, how much they inspire others.

To Quote Arthurian Lore: "Violence is not Strength, Compassion is not a weakness"

Spike was the living embodiment of that quote and I'm so proud of our little dragon.

Also I've been in the Fandom long enough to know this, I sense a metric ton of ship fics between Spike and Ember.

So... are adolescent dragons the only ones allowed to compete? Gotta wonder where the rest of the grown-ups are. :twilightoops: Pretty sure they would all love a shot at being the boss, too.

Nice concept for a Spike-centric episode, and as far as execution goes, hey, his merits aren't overly reliant on contrived circumstances to shine through for once! :moustache:

Well, they finally did it. They finally, six seasons in, gave us a GOOD Spike episode.

(Well, technically this is the second time they've done it. I mean, Power Ponies.)

3874152
But she could at least trap him in a force field shell, or maybe just slide him back about twenty feet. She doesn't have to attack, just defend. Maybe teleport him back outside the caves, even.

3874152 Years of being Twilight's Number One slave assistant has honed Spike into a lethal ball of mail service.

3874159
I'm wondering if full-sized dragons get lazy and complacent - Not willing to abandon their mountains and hoards, even should the Dragon Lord summon them. Only the youngsters are sufficiently mobile and still curious enough about the world around them to move around a lot.

3874152 Not surprising she doesn't know how to fight. I highly doubt Celestia taught her to fight. Merely magic.

I dare anyone to say there isn't a good Spike episode. If this isn't a good Spike episode to a lot of people, I don't know what is then. It is a humongous step up from the idiot plot that was Princess Spike. It builds the world of dragons, give us a better look into them. I love the world building and character designs for the dragons.

Garble returning was a nice thing, and I am happy he was NOT reformed. This opens the door up for him returning as a recurring villain, which is something the show needs more of.

Spike himself proves to be a total bad ass again and is very intelligent in this episode. He's not doing this to make others respect him; he's doing this to protect ALL of Equestria. He uses some good strategies and strength in what he does. He manages to pull Ember from the water and uses strategic thinking in avoiding the obstacles. This is the Spike we need to see more of and build upon it.

Spike even manages to make an alliance with the dragons through what he did alone. Even Twilight admits to that. This was seriously awesome. Loved this episode and a good contender for one of the best episodes in my eyes. I'd rank this Spike episode along the lines of Equestria Games. It's a fantastic episode all around, and one for everyone to enjoy.

Oh wait, the precredits canonizes unicorn magic visibly glowing. The precedent has been set.

FANFIC SUGGESTION:
Notice how that dragon controlling staff is pony sized? I wonder who made the dragon controlling staff and for what reason. That would be an interesting fic to read.

Feel free to tag me here if anyone writes it.

i liked the episode, but i still ship sparity. spike just didnt seem to show any interest in ember besides being friendly and helpful, nah, im still hoping for dragon/pony loveliness.

*edit*
Spike was so awesome in this episode and the ending credits music sweeeeet!:rainbowkiss:

3874164 Again, Twilight is not that smart when it comes to application of spells (Bats, Lesson Zero, and Swarm of the Century are clear evidence of that). She doesn't understand that there is a time and place for everything, and considering that she keeps on refusing to learn when not to cast a spell, she will keep making those mistakes.

3874188
Her application was fine in Bats! (she was only foiled by something she could not reasonably have foreseen), and she was having a psychotic breakdown in Lesson Zero. Other than the single time in Swarm of the Century, she understands time and place just fine.

3874178 I agree with you there, especially in terms of needing a recurring villain. The only one the show had was Diamond Tiara till last season threw that out the window! Nice to see Spike getting a good episode...

3874159

If you look at the traps inside that cavern, any dragon the size of Ember's father would get skewered/not be able to fit through at all. Contrary to the idea that only the biggest and the strongest should get the sceptor, the entire obstacle course beyond the boulder chucking was designed to limit the size of the new dragon lord to that of the adolescents and in Spike's case, babies.

Although, once the sceptor got thrown in they all stopped glowing, so maybe the adult dragons were like, "it'll wear off in a few hours/days" and did say screw it lol.

The new Ship Name!!!!!!!!!!Embike!!!!!!!!!!!!! Spread the word! :D
