Wasteland Wonderland (plus Angel's Pip-Boy Diary #13) · 12:22pm Dec 19th, 2015

art by Icekatze

This week, the Wasteland Wailers have produced another glorious song. :yay: And they have graced us with two versions of their new "Broken Wing Blues". The one below is the original version. At the end of the blog, I will give you the very special Velvet Remedy version, sung by Brittany Church as Velvet Remedy for the soundtrack to Overmare Studios' Fallout: Equestria RPG. Please leave comments on the YouTube videos, letting them know how amazing they are! :pinkiehappy:

Speaking of music, it is that time of year again. That time of December when it is too early to post a Christmas blog, but late enough for certain holiday intrusions to have worn out their welcome. How many years now have we seen the same commercials? (The M&Ms meet Santa and both faint. Somebody decorates a tree on a tropical beach with Christmas lights....) Even worse is the music. You can avoid commercials easily enough, but that same handful of holiday jingles that we have heard for years is playing in every store, mall and elevator. At least in the recent Fallout games, you can turn off your radio when you get sick of hearing the same songs over and over and over again. But complaining isn't the way to approach this. The solution is easy: load up your mp3 player, pop in your headphones, and enjoy your own soundtrack. :rainbowdetermined2:

And since it is the Christmas season, why not slip a few holiday songs onto your playlist that haven't grown tired and stale yet? :raritywink:

After the break is the next installment of Angel's Pip-Boy Diary. This week, in between segments, I'm going to add links to Christmas music that I like to throw on during this season. These songs aren't new by any means, but they are a nice change from the standard fare. :trollestia: In the comments, I would love if you would link some of your own alternative Christmas songs.

But first, I present to you, the smooth tones of The Wasteland Wailers! :moustache:

Angel's Pip-Boy Diary

Days 27 - 30

Day 27 – Midnight
November 19, 2287

I delivered the good news to Oberland Station. They too will support the Minutemen.

On my way back to the farm, I got briefly caught up in a skirmish between raiders and scavengers. It was on that same street where the raiders were wiped out by that neighborhood of ferals.

Both parties turned hostile at my encroachment. I got a few shots off at the raiders, then fled the area. I didn’t want to be forced to take the lives of the scavengers. As best that I can tell, they are people just trying to get by. The hostility of the Commonwealth has made a lot of them dangerously paranoid and trigger-happy. I hope that the return of the Minutemen and the establishment of law and order helps.

I decided to stop and check out Beantown Brewery on my way back to Rhys. I was expecting a fight, and I got one. I wasn’t expecting to overhear them talking about the fall of Ack-Ack’s gang. The raiders of the Commonwealth are beginning to realize someone is taking out the gangs.

They clearly hadn’t heard about the eradication of the Back Street Apparel group or the Hangman’s Alley gang. But once word of those get around… and now add Tower Tom’s Beantown gang to the list… it will be the raider’s turn to be frightened and jumping at shadows. With any luck, some of the gangs will decide being predatory assholes isn’t worth the risk in the Commonwealth and dismantle themselves.

A few notes:

The bandits here probably thought I was crazy, coming in dressed like this. But I have to admit that there is something immensely satisfying about taking down a thug while dressed as Grognak and swinging his axe.

I discovered through their terminals that Beantown Brewery was making a profit by lowering quality control. Because of course they were.

Apparently, at least one of Tower Tom’s boys liked beer bowling. They also have a sense of humor. I found Mr. Teddy enjoying breakfast before a long day at the office. And later I found him and Mrs. Teddy engaged in… wrestling.

I also found another of those weird party-trap lunchboxes.

Tower Tom himself looked impressive, and he didn’t fall easily. He was in a manager’s office above the bottling floor. I sniped at him from another catwalk across the brewery. The guy took several shots to the face before going down. He had to be on drugs, and probably a hefty cocktail of them. He had a chem lab in his office.

Tower Tom’s amazing rifle does not impress. I’ve built better. Clearly, I should not put stock in the tastes of raiders.

I’m going to have to make multiple trips to lug everything. Thankfully, this place is not far from Oberland Station. Shouldn’t take more than an hour to get everything worth scavenging there and ready to be scrapped for parts and materials.

First, however, I’m headed back to B.o.S. HQ to let Rhys know that Hubris has been cleared and to get some sleep.

Day 27 – Early Afternoon
November 19, 2287

I have a new mission from Danse. It is my task to try to find out what happened to the lost Brotherhood of Steel recon team.

There was never a rescue mission; the B.o.S. doesn’t have the resources. It is good to know that if I’m even in need of a rescue, I’m probably on my own. It also explains, at least in part, why I was the only responder to the Gladius team’s call for help.

Fortunately, this mission is not time sensitive. I am glad that I can put if off for a bit while I pursue other obligations. However, it is necessary as a point of honor.

My next mission from Rhys is to clear Parkview Lounge.

I spoke to Preston. We’ve got several settlements that are just starting to grow, and as I have seen, the Minutemen are beginning to re-band. According to Preston, what we need most right now is to establish communications. I am pleased that he has a plan to do so.

Preston wants to retake Castle, the old Minutemen headquarters. He emphasizes that the transmitter there would allow us to broadcast all across the Commonwealth. Castle was abandoned when the place was destroyed by a sea monster. I fully suspect that this is a personal and emotional goal for Preston. His urge to retake the stronghold seems rooted in much more than communications concerns. The transmitter may be just a convenient excuse to push for this.

Honestly, I agree fully with the need for communication capabilities. But I don’t believe we are anywhere near ready to mount a major military operation, especially not if it might involve fighting a sea monster. And it will. I’m sure of it.

We have too little in the way of manpower and resources to risk it. Especially considering that this monster took out the Minutemen stationed there in the Castle’s prime. I told him that we would retake Castle, but later. First, we need to establish more of a presence in the Commonwealth. We need to build up resources, make the settlements that we are fostering stronger and better, and draw in more support and recruits. Then we will go fight his sea monster.

Meanwhile, County Crossing need our help.

Again, it is hard not to notice that the number of people that I am protecting is an order of magnitude smaller than the number of people that I must kill to do so. Bargaining is almost never an option. It makes me appreciate the rare cases when I can engage in diplomacy, like between Wolfgang and Trudy, even more.

Day 27 – Late Afternoon
November 19, 2287

I am trying to find Parkview Lounge. Honestly, our best bet for getting the level of firepower the minutemen would need to take on a sea monster probably lies in strengthening ties with the Brotherhood of Steel. Danse promised access to levels of firepower that I suspect we are going to need.

Where is that incessant beeping coming from?

This block is currently experiencing a four-way between myself, raiders, supermutants and a pack of wild dogs (one of them “legendary”). I think I may choose the better part of valor and let the few remaining kill each other off.

Day 27 – Sunset
November 19, 2287

First, some side notes: Every so often, I come across a mess of anti-communist posters. I’m having a hard time knowing how to feel about them anymore.

On the porch of the house behind me, there is a skeletal reminder that losing yourself in wine and drugs will get you killed. Granted, that was always true. It is just faster now, and more violent.

Now then…

I’ve found Parkview Lounge. The place is a major supermutant fortification. I may have bitten off more than I can chew with this mission.

The beeping earlier was a supermutant holding a bomb, one of a pack of supermutants. I sniped the bomb with Righteous Authority.

The explosion wiped the whole pack out, including a “legendary” brute. Apparently, that mutation can’t regenerate from dead.

Now if only every supermutant was walking around with an exposed high-explosive, this mission would be a lot easier. I can hear SMs fighting someone else in the floors above me. Meanwhile, I’m getting treated to more and more of the SM’s choice in horror décor. And here I was cringing at the blood on my hands. I hate these guys so much.

Day 28
November 20, 2287

The cat and armed mouse fight lasted all night. I’ve gone through more stimpacks than is decent. The SM enforcer was a tank.

I feel silly calling these monsters “supermutants”. It still sounds too much like a comic book name. Let’s call them what they are. They’re ogres. They are huge, green and dumb… just like the ogres from the swords-and-sorcery games half the drama club used to play back in high school.

I am not in any shape to deal with the raiders that the ogres were fighting with today, assuming any of them survived.

I spent much of the day retrieving all my collected goods from stashes, storing what I might need, breaking down choice rubbish for parts, and selling the rest. The rest was spent overseeing construction at Starlight. I’ve also gotten my next mission from Rhys. This time, he’s sending me to Mass Pike Tunnel.

That is going to have to wait. For now, I’m back at Starlight. I plan to sleep for a week.

Day 29
November 21, 2287

Supermutants attacked the Abernathy farm! I was in Sanctuary, checking up on things, when I got word. After Parkview Lounge, I know the kind of threat these monster-men can be. I races to the Abernathy’s defense in my suit of power armor.

Everyone survived. That’s the good news. Also, I acquired a combat shotgun from the battle, which is a major upgrade to my arsenal. On the down side, a lot of the tato plants were destroyed, thanks to the ogres throwing grenades. I spent part of the day helping replant part of their garden. I also need to build up the farm’s defenses. We started by building a fence around the property.

As luck would have it, I spotted a familiar face, and was able to buy another dog.

Thanksgiving is in a few days. I think I’ll aim to spend it in Diamond City. But first, I need to make sure that out settlements can enjoy the holiday.

Today, Mama Murphy said to me, “You’ll find what you’re looking for. I know it.” I have to say, that did wonders for my morale.

Day 30
November 22, 2287

I spend the entire day at the Abernathy farm. The farm now has power and defenses. We are looking over plans for further construction, defense and planting. In the meantime, I’ve been blessed to enjoy the Abernathy’s hospitality. These are truly wonderful people. And it was wonderful to take a few days off from fighting.

As always enjoy the entry. Moreso than usual in fact, the music pads it out and makes it feel like I've gotten more out of the experience and I also really like your taste so this introduced me to a slough of songs I like. :raritystarry: It's only three days but it feels like I got five days worth of enjoyment out of it. :pinkiehappy: As an aside, here's an Easter Egg if you don't already know about it (while it's not a spoiler or anything maybe you want to discover it on your own so I'll cover it): Diamond City is decorated for the in-game date of Christmas

Don't know if super mutants quite qualify as eldritch, but that's still the most refreshing holiday soundtrack I've seen this season. And the journal continues to entertain.

I races to the Abernathy’s defense

make sure that out settlements can enjoy the holiday.

(thought you might want to know)

I love these blogs, they always make me want to hop right back in and start playing myself :pinkiehappy:

That time of December when it is too early to post a Christmas blog, but late enough for certain holiday intrusions to have worn out their welcome. [...] Even worse is the music.

Oh gods yes. First christmas carol I heard on the radio on a restaraunt on December 1st and I was already sick of it. I'll come back for the music, I'm just reading this while taking a break and don't have the time now.

Now if only every supermutant was walking around with an exposed high-explosive, this mission would be a lot easier.

Say that with three running at you. ...Actually that would probably end the same. You've found an easy way to kill them. Meanwhile I've stuck myself in the mindset that I WANT the explosives they're carrying so I have to kill them the hard way and kill them quickly. I don't even use the Fat Man and I want those Mini Nukes.

Abernathy Farm sounds like a great place to be for a little Thanksgiving Celebration.

These are a fun little break, always a good read. Thank you for doing them.

Well that was fun. I like how Quest perks seem to match up with what Angel is doing in the story. (A natural progression from Quest to Perk) I wonder if after this, that Angel will start setting up defenses around all the settlements she might finds?

Hopefully setting up defenses really works out. Hate it if Raiders tie Angel up in all the Raiding they get into on easy targets.

Edit: Oh, thanks for sharing those videos, I like them all. Though I really like that Cellos one.

The blog, as always, is a welcome diversion from the day. Thanks for the extra holiday tunes, it's always nice to be able to subvert the tropes of the season every once in a while. And of course, Brittany Church never disappoints. Such a lovely voice!

My contribution to the alternative holiday scene we have going here is an old smooth jazz fallback of mine; I always send it to people whenever they complain of the same ol' holiday nonsense we've listened to for the past fifty years. :ajsmug: Enjoy!

I always play my MP3 Player everyday in my ears, been lovin my all time Christmas Favorites, which now also consists of a majority of the MLP Christmas CD I downloaded awhile back!:pinkiehappy::twilightsmile::raritywink::rainbowlaugh::yay::moustache::pinkiesmile:

Walls! that's what I always start to build, I build walls around my Farms as they are the most fragile, from there I build my defenses, places like the Farm this method is good because the house and farm are close together, so I build turrets at areas where I believe they would be best useful, like high areas to rain death upon those who cant get past the walls or have to run around to get to the only entrance in the small Farm.

So using the height advantage of the main building is useful.

Guard towers are needed to have battle ready people who can shoot over said walls. then arm them with blast weapons like missile launchers.

Bad luck on Tower Tom there. I got a Long Recon Sniper Scope off him. Also somehow knocked him over the rails in his laser vaporizing death animation which made it rather tricky to loot the dang thing as the ash pile was floating in midair off to the side and below the level of the catwalk.

Finally back for the music now that I have time to listen. I need to remember that Payday 2 one, it's beautiful.

Here are a few of my holiday favorites

If it weren't for the lack of context suggesting the "Pit of Death" is comedic instead of horribly violent, I'd go caroling with this song.

Viewer Digression is Advised for this one:

Matthew Taranto of the Brawl in the Family comic has about 8 different Nintendo-themed Christmas songs so I'm just going to drop a link to his youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/user/BrawlintheFamily/videos

If Metallica had balls, if the Beatles had a decent drummer, If U2 didn't have a tool for a front man, If Rolling Stones could actually play there instruments and if Justin Bieber had any talent, they would still have to kill themselves in their drunk assisted depression over the crippling truth that they'll never be as good as GWAR

Ah GWar. Always known for their tasteful performances and better wardrobes the Liza Manelli and Cher combined

Ace of Spades is pretty good

And Johnny Cash is always a joy

I can JUST see Velvet doing a Diamond scrunch face while Calamity head bangs to Saddam A Go Go.

Velvet: Oh MY CELESTIA! What is that uncouth racket
Calamity: ANDHEDIEDANDHEDIEDANDHEDIED

I've actually quite enjoyed the "pony kind of christmas" album.

I also finally had time to go back to this blog and listen to the music. Not what I was expecting :pinkiegasp:

Given Bethesda's approach to the Super Mutants calling them ogres is amazingly appropriate.
