The best part of The One Where Pinkie Pie Knows may just be Pumpkin Cake shushing Pinkie atop her mother's back in the opening scene. Also, we need to start a pony novel teamup: Smash Fortune could join Daring Do, Con Mane and Shadow Spade could come together in a League of Extraordinary Gentlemen-style awesome thinger. :D (I've been trying very hard to keep track of 'characters who appear in books' in the show for just such an occasion!) But if anyone was less than thrilled by this episode, I think it's probably because it feels like one of the novels. The scavenger hunt is a very GM Berrow thing to have, for instance, and the overall tone is as overbearingly slice-of-life as the books tend to be. As a long-time connoisseur of the books, I can say this is so! :V
As for today's episode, who's bright idea was it to air the Christmas episode a week before the Halloween episode? :V This show, I swear to god. It was a fucking weird episode, but it was also pretty fun!

This episode really reminds me of another, but I can't think of what. I mean, they leaned really heavily on Pinky Apple Pie, but that was more or less built into the premise. I guess there's a little Party Pooped "encountering other cultures" going on in here? Kind of makes me wish they'd skipped that one.
Anyway, yeah, Pie Family time. I'd thought GM Berrow had written this one initially, since she named them all in the books (at least they used those names!) but it's actually written by Nick "When You Conf With Nick, You" Confalone. Who... also wrote Party Pooped. <.< Okay, Confalone, you and me need to have words.
I do like this one better, though, even if it filled me with just about as much cringe. And what's with the Hearth's Warming dolls? Creepy. And did we really need to recap the HWE tale in the middle there?
Of course, the Pie Family was center stage, and I absolutely love everything about them. Maud was, again, fantastic in a supporting role, just like as in Make New Friends but Keep Discord and she absolutely not in her initial episode. I adore the way Pinkie's parents talk. I finally know which sister is which. And the fandom battles are gonna come down to one question: Limestone, or Marble?
I am officially Team Limestone. :V Yes, I know, Marble is Ultra Fluttershy, and she talks like Big Macintosh, and she was already a fandom waifu back when she was Inkie Pie, but I don't care. LIMESTONE PIE IS ANGRY ABOUT EVERYTHiNG AND THAT IS AMAZING. She was just super-intense the entire time and I loved it. :D
Also Granny Smith is thirsty as fuck. :V
I think I've devolved into simple reactions now. My friend and I had the exchange of "Earth pony master race!" "But they're all earth po--" "DOESN'T MATTER!" Applejack's "weird" rock doll is pretty much dickbutt. :V Why settle for ruining Christmas when you can destroy the world as well? And thank god Pinkie for once realized she was overdoing it and not helping. That makes up for a lot of season four, which season five seems to be doing quite a bit of in regards to Pinkie. I appreciate it.

Overall, it feels more and more like a fanservice episode like Magic Duel, and most of the entertainment value was from the characters. Eh, 10/10, it was okay.

I really don't think being possible ninth cousins is anything to worry about.
The lines are so utterly far removed that there really is no issue.
If anything, it would make Pinkie and Applejack related by marriage.
Personally, I want Luna to spend a week at the rock farm and have her linguistic habits backslide a few centuries.
I really liked, this one, and the characters work was great. Also this was so thick with the Marble/Big Mac shipping. Maud Pie is great, and they actually did their research. All the geological stuff she said was correct. That Maud/Apple Bloom friendshipping. They make a good pair, the excitable young 'un who finds a kindred spirit in someone who internalizes everything (much like her sister's crying on the inside—man, there's another shipping pair), and the grown mare seeing a little something of herself in a possibly distant cousin. Yeah, this was kind of weird and a little over the top on the clashing traditions, but it was also really fun.

I'm actually very glad the geology held up. That's the kind of thing that's important in writing for TV! Also you're totally right about AB and Maud, they seemed to really hit it off, and what's more, Apple Bloom seems to understand her a bit more than any of Pinkie's adult friends.

I think this one's in the running for my favourite episode of the season. There's the complexity gracefully handled -- both within the earth pony tribe, and within the Pie family. Pretty much every character is sharply drawn. There's Pinkie and AJ friendshipping -- which should barely work at all, but somehow they pull it off. Even the culture-clash storyline, which I don't usually care for, came out well.
Damn. I'd nearly forgotten I had a fanboy mode.

On my mom's side, the family tree's got a few branches that cross back and forth. I think it was my great grandfather and great grandmother that were third cousins or something. Given that a lot of them lived in very small towns (who's heard of Napoleon, MI?), there probably weren't a lot of choices.
I knew we have some sort of connection. Something special.
Now I question if maybe we were separated at birth.

EDIT: Not to mention Lime has best mane. She clearly has a powerful love for her family and her family's tradition, probably made more so overprotective if she's ever had to deal with other judgemental ponies thinking her sisters and parents weirdos. Limestone won me over the moment she shoved her eye in my face.
Pinkie's family was pretty good, yes, and even if the whole episode (down to the MarbleMac shipping) was very telegraphed, it was quite amusing on the whole. Pinkie's family have the worst Hearth's Warming ever, and the "nopony ever finds their gift" thing (and the soup... and, well, everything) has major shades of a G-rated Hilariously Abusive Childhood for Pinkie Pie.
I'm pretty sure that no one actually hides gifts other than Pinkie Pie, who doesn't realize that it is a cruel tradition of making it so you don't have to buy gifts for your family. Pinkie Pie, of course, does actually do it... and no one ever looks for them because they know, man.

It's no wonder she struggles so much with the whole "people" thing.

You know, makes you wonder since she's the head of the farm, if maybe she was who convinced her pa to hire Trixie. Or maybe, she's the reason Trixie had so much HELL on the farm. One things for sure, she looks like she and Trixie could have become fast friends. Both seemingly upstaged by other ponies. Both have tempers and I suppose on some degree an ego to match. That ego could probably been a nice pep talk Trixie gave before she left, maybe all these maybes will lead to someone writing a fic about Limestone picking up a few habits from Trixie or something. Even if Marble and Big Mac somehow proved to be first cousins, they could still marry in Canada, all of western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Mexico, Brazil, Russia, etc. The US is very unusual in prohibiting first-cousin marriage in many states. For a UK example: Charles Darwin married his first cousin. Nobody much cares. I mean, I hate incest shipfics, but MarbleMac doesn't bother me at all.
