You can now select what banner you want to use by hovering to the left/right of the banner to select the next/previous one.
Also, regarding the search redirecting to google:
A lot of people seem to be suggesting that the filters have gone or something. This...is not the case? The search never used filters by default, if you go to the browse page and click the search icon at the top, it'll bring down the filters.
The reason text search goes to google is because filtering on search results makes no sense almost all the time. If you're searching by text, you know the name of the story. If filters help you find it, sure, great, but the whole point of searching by name is find a specific story and google does a much MUCH better job of that than we can hope to provide right now.

I only found out about the filtered search recently, only because I made a comment that I thought the search possibilities were rather limited. Turns out pretty much all of what I wanted was there (like the ability to only see completed stories), but the UI wasn't intuitive.
It'd be nice if there was an option to go to "Advanced Search" as a 4th option, below Clopfics, Latest Updates and Top Rated Stories. And if that search button in the picture in your blog post said "Advanced Search" rather than "Search," to distinguish what it does from the search above the banner.

Oh my God. We finally have a banner selector and people are asking for more goddamn shipping banners? For Christ's sake, two of the three banners are already pairing images with Rainbow Dash. How about a little bit more variety? Relatively speaking, I'm kind of a closet brony. I visit this website somewhat regularly and the last thing that I need someone to think when they walk in on me reading and find out that I'm a "brony" is that I femship these colorful cartoon horses from a children's television show together as well. Which I don't, because in my opinion that's fucking stupid and completely inconceivable within the show's universe. Look. I'm being an ass, I know. But all I'm asking is could we please get a little more variety within the banner selection before loading up on a shit ton more ridiculous shipping banners?

FiMFiction has 27 different banners that I know of. Unfortunately, knighty's banner selector doesn't seem to let you use all of them.

Only problem is, now after you have selected a banner, there is currently no chance of getting back to the random selection.
It would be nice if there was a possibility to chose this again. If there is a possibility already, please tell me.

It's an add-on for Firefox (and maybe chrome?) that allows you to write your own styles for sites. It can override any styles that you want it to. For example, I've changed the default home page for Firefox Nightly to look like this.
With that add-on, I could simply replace the banner image CSS with my own to give it any look I want. If I had the time (and if I wanted to), I could basically re-write this entire site to look the way I want (but the functionality would remain the same).
