Yes, we changed the search bar to redirect to Google.
EDIT: I'm amazed that any of you could possibly prefer the old search, but if you absolutely must use the almost unusable old search function, simply hit browse. This will also allow you to use all the old browse features as well, those were never gone.

May I ask why?
And it works better that way. Much appreciation.
I have no opinion.
Please, no. I have a virus that redirects me to this annoying website whenever I click on a Google link.
Err, I must ask: why?
uhh...no words...except...why?
ehhhh kinda annoying, but understandable.
...WHY?!
EWWWW, google.
Why would you guys do that?
Yes, I do overuse this.
Also, if anyone is annoyed with this, (like me) just click browse then search and bravo, old search engine. pls dnt kil me

Likely to help reduce server load.
>>276157
That's your fault. Clean your machine and stop blaming Google for your woes.
Why?
Because Google is best search engine, that's why.
No seriously, now you can search for text within a fic. For example: try searching for "you are a truly beautiful soul". You should find chapter 8 of Eternal.
And that's just the beginning! Go forth and read, my brethren!
>>276157
I can help with that if you wish.
I like this. The server load really does go down a bit, though the 502s are still ripe. I am wondering though how that will effect the usefulness of tags. TVTropes uses a customized google search. I don't know much about it, but would that be workable here?
Did Wanderer get what he wanted? I am quite entrigued to be honest
...browsing by tags and characters still works though, right? x.x
>>276179
What he has said is true.
>>276187 Nah. Building a new computer, wiping the HDD on this one, it won't be a problem.
I noticed this on my phone when I was searching for something. I thought something was wrong.
Nevermind then :P
But why? I liked the search engine.
Ya because that's not annoying at all
Despite the loading improvement, I still like the old system. It felt more clean, rather than using directly bringing us to google for searches. Why are all of these changes not appealing to me?! First the banners, then that email thing. And before that was the feature box! Well, I'm starting to get accustomed to the 10-slot feature box, but the addition of blue-boxed names makes it very difficult to not rant about knighty.
Great! The old search was annoyingly unforgiving if you weren't sure of a story's exact title and it didn't always produce the cleverest results.
>>276179 oh my god thank you
I personally like the old one more, as I get to see details like the number of chapters and whatnot without having to click. I do feel that having both of these around is the best though; thank you.
It feels a bit awkward to me due to color difference between Google and FIMFiction, but text search is nice.
...Am I the only one who has to wait about half a minute to get either a loaded page or (much more frequently) a 502?
>>276263
Sometimes. Right now it's doing pretty good.
Why?
If I want to search stories using google, I'll type [Story name] Fimfiction into google.
>>276179
I was going to us that.
>>276229
^That.
So yeah, what:
>>276149 >>276161>>276174>>276177>>276178>>276222 said.
i had gotten use to the previous way
and so shall i get use to the new way
Well at least the Browse search engine still works, I guess. As long as it keeps out the 502s.
Otherwise this is okay, but I think it kind of 'breaks' the experience and design of the entire site.
>>276157
Browse=> Click anything=> Change view to search=> Profit
I have a feeling its going to be like this for now on.
bad Poultron
imma hit u with a stick
Unless you completely remove FiMFiction's search option, a future update of my script will have an option to change this
Why aren't you directing to Bing?
>>276369
I threw up a little.
>>276332 This. The instant that goes, this site turns unusable, but as long as the browse search function isn't messed with, I'm Pinkie keen.
>>276301 Absolutely agree, but this won't change everything, as it probably has its reasons. Still, I found the old search engine much more convenient, as Google often lists stories multiple times, and it also doesn't display the character/category tags or the cover image in the results, as did the old search engine. At least you can still use the old search engine if you search for specific tags. Though it doesn't search for text in the descriptions any more, which is a pity.
Yeah. Preferred the old search a bit more. Oh well.
>>276405
A great shame indeed.
Don't reinvent the wheel. Google does search, feel free to outsource it. Doubly so if it helps with the 502 errors.
Though Integrating a custom search would be better, with ratings and tags and the cover image and such. Even without that I like the change.
Add both! Problem solved.
Changes = Cringes
Addition = Appreciation.
Edit: Server Bandwidth? Erm...well... was there a problem earlier?
Meh, I only search by character and genre tags anyway, so nothing's changed for me.
I know someone above has a quick fix for this to get the old search back, but would there be a way to make it so you can search using either or? (just a checkbox beside the search bar or something?)
I ask this because:
1. I liked the old one better, kind of.
2. So do some other people, however the results are varied; some do prefer the google search.
3. The people who don't like it and don't find the fix are going to be angry and it would be an easy (I would think so, anyways) way to make them shut up. (So would just saying "DealWithIt.gif" but that doesn't make you seem as nice.)
I think it was you, Poultron, who made a blog not too long ago about the UI being a pain to work with at times but I believe this would be a decent fix, no? (Keep in mind, I know absolutely nothing about programming or running a website or anything, so forgive me if that's actually like... ridiculously annoying to do or something.)
Either way, I don't use the Search that much anyways... so... those are just my two cents...
>>276372
Agreed...

While I miss the look of the layout when you searched stories, it does help in finding stories. Take 'Equestria: Total War', you can't find it in the old system if you type 'Equestria Total War' but you have to be exact and make it 'Equestria: Total War" with the :
Good idea. The old system is still available if you really need it, and the quick and dirty searches are best left to Google who will almost certainly do a better job anyway. It's hard to beat the search algorithms of the search leader of the entire planet.
I think it works fine...
Goddamnit, I liked the old one too much to use this. Besides, now I can't read the description of the story without doing the browse search thing. Fudge.
I don't like it. Change I demand. CHANGE FOR CELESTIA'S SAKE!
Meh, if you were gonna use the search bar you knew what you were looking for anyways, this just speeds things up.
Why do you people love the old way so much? I couldn't find ANYTHING because I was terrible with remembering the title of a fic, but I remembered some text.
This new one reduces bandwith and allows people (Like me) who have quite a bit of trouble spelling and remembering names. And who the heck uses that feature to actually browse new stories via that feature? Moreso, who actually successfully used that feature?
Because I would really like to know how to use it. I couldn't even search my own fics right with that.
Blue-boxed feature titles are hideous.
Oh, and I prefer old search too
>>276186
Google Pony is so adorable!
Searchlight?
What's her name?
I've run a Google custom search on one of my sites for about four years with few if any issues. (It's nowhere nearly as big as FIMFiction, but there are about 22,000 pages indexed.)
Redirect to Blekko please.
If time is taken to setup the proper tag(s), it would be better.
>>276157 Had that too. Run a full system antivirus scan, that worked for me.
Search engines are tough, yo.
Such mixed reactions... I don't mind this change at all.
i quite like this, finding authors is easier this way because i can just search them rather then a story they wrote
WHY?!
I'm amazed that any of you could possibly prefer the old search, but if you absolutely must use the almost unusable old search function, simply hit browse.
What is this!? I don't like change! It scares me!
>>276234
This!
Oh thank heavens! That old search function was garbage.
The new search is better, so that way when you type in a title that might not be correct, it won't be like "not" on the results, so Google is better.
Come on, Google is better than ask.com or Yahoo! Even Bing sucks.
>>276369
>>276157 Did you try, I don't know, using a anti virus?
>>276229 But the banners are awesome...
>>276369 Don't worry, your retarded questions will be answered by the 3 hitmen I just sent to kill you
>>277318 I would have, but I'M LAZY! WHY DO YOU THINK I'M LASHING OUT AT YOU, HUH?
I... don't know how I feel about this.
I like the advanced search. It does cool and usefull things, like seach in my read later list. (Yes, it requires a smidgen of coercion, but it works. I made a guide if you happen to see this and are interested.) I'll allow, though, that it makes a sort of sense to have the main (basic) search go to google.
Somehow.
I dunno. I'll deal with this, same way we do with any other site updates. But as some people have said, the old search did have its advantages.
Wow, you really are dicks. I mean, I've always known this since Day One (like, forever-ago when I signed up) but this really, honestly, truly is a superdickish step. Almost as superdickish as Poultron.
No, seriously, for reals, keep the search internal. Otherwise, I shall send THIS:
to your houses and flats and apartments.
No, really, I genuinely do have Psychoshy's cell number.
>>276369
This is like asking how StapleTapeWormsOnMyPenis isn't the Sims shop mode soundtrack
I hate the new search or whatever search this is. I use google with the browser and I find authors, not stories...
The old search term was better, since it held the word in CONTEXT, not the damn title. D:
I rather have an overload than never finding stories and searching within many, many character list... since we all know how character list don't help all that much
Far be it for me to suggest this since I don't know how to run a site, but couldn't you give people the option to switch between the two search options. I get the practicality of the google search, but it's unfamiliar with the users who have become accustomed to the simple (If a bit slow on the uptake) old search, I did like using the old search so I could see word count, chapter numbers and so on. Google is just...... blah. It give duplicate searchers and so on. And I really can't find or get to grips with the old one people keep saying is still around by clicking on the browse hotspot.
