The purpose of a story is that it's a story. It can be more, but it can never be less.

    Friendship is Magic: the Musical

So I've been trying to find ways out of my recent funk, and this was one of the most recent attempts. I thoroughly enjoyed the freshman season of Hazbin Hotel, particularly the outstanding musical numbers and how the whole season could, with just a few small modifications, be made into a Broadway style stage musical.

So I figured hell, why not do the same with Friendship is Magic?

    Our Last Anniversary

I've been radio silent on social media since my now ex-wife and I announced our split. A few days ago, I was moved to write this and post it on Facebook. Figured I might as well post it here as well.

    Folks say it's pretty good.

    State of the Author 2023

    It's bad.

    Real bad.

So it should come as no surprise that my wife and I are divorcing. We're having to take it slow because she's so close to the end of her degree and I want her to be in a good place to help take care of our boys. We're still co-habitating, still friends.

    New Story Incoming

It's taken years. Multiple plot revisions. The complete scrapping of "Silent Night." More false starts than I'm okay admitting. And, ultimately, it took the collapse of the life as I've known it to drive me into the mindspace necessary to find this lost child in the wilderness and finally bring her home.

I hope the wait has been worth it.

Jade Ring Answers Random Questions · 6:50am Sep 14th, 2015

Since Rubycast asked the most questions, I'll answer those first.

1.) What's your fav mlp race?
-Unicorns. It goes back to one of my favorite movies of all time; 'the Last Unicorn.' I grew up with that movie, so I've always had an affinity for the creatures. Also, one killed a dude in 'Cabin in the Woods.'

2.) What's your least fav mlp race?
-Probably Pegasi. Nothing personal, but there's too many variables about their physiology.

3.) Thoughts on Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon?
-I think there's some development down the road for them. They could really use an episode to develop them further.

4.) What's your major/minor in college?
-I'm currently seeking my AA in Elementary Education. I aim to teach the 3rd grade.

5.) Quick! Name your favorite fanfic! (You can't name your own)\
-It used to be 'Windfall,' but it's since been eclipsed by 'Archmage.' Holy hell, how did it take so long for that story to cross my radar?

6.) What's the color of your socks?! (I threw this one in for a laugh)
-Blacker than the blackest pitch, darker than the darkest witch...

And now, random questions that I've been asked in the past, finally answered.

1. What do you consider your greatest accomplishment as a writer?
-Probably having a section on TV Tropes. I told my friend Will about that, and he acted like I was a famous person. Thanks for that, Yami.

2. Tell us more about your wife. Is she a brony/pegasister?
-Sadly not. My lovely missus loves her some Flufflepuff, but is mostly ambivalent to the show and the fandom as a whole. She doesn't hate it, but she prefers to stay away. Luckily we're both MASSIVE Disney Dorks.

3. What's up with your profile picture? Why that pony design?
-Green and purple are my favorite colors. The blue coat is my old overcoat, my Air Force blues rain-jacket. My wife no longer lets me wear it. Cut out of the picture is my old fedora that I had made in New York City's Little Italy. I no longer wear that as a personal choice. My glasses are my old aviators. Yes, I'm in the market for a new image.

4. What is your favorite line in written history?
-"The man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed." The opening line of 'the Dark Tower: The Gunslinger' and the closing line of the final 'Dark Tower' novel by Stephen King. It's simple, evocative, and epic. I love it.

5. What's your favorite play? Musical?
-Play? 'The Crucible' by Arthur Miller. John Proctor is one of the greatest characters to ever grace the stage. Musical? Probably 'Little Shop of Horrors.'

6. Do you collect anything?
-Mostly rare horror movies on DVD. I freaked out when I stumbled across the unfairly forgotten 'Dagon,' more an adaptation of Lovecraft's 'the Shadow Over Innsmouth' by Stuart Gordon. It's still the best Lovecraft adaptation to date. I've also recently started collecting Funko's POP figures. I call my collection Villains and Monsters, and it currently features figures such as Agent Smith, Pennywise, Sam Hain, Brock Lesnar, Deathstroke, and Cthulhu.

7. What show do you hate that everyone loves?
-Honestly? The Walking Dead.

Let me explain.

I started reading the comics back in 2008 and fell hard for them. I watched the first season of the show with rapt attention. But as time went on, my interest began to wane. I stopped reading the comics after a particularly hideous death of a MAJOR character reminded me that the story would probably never end and all the characters that I loved would eventually die. I'm not a huge fan of open-ended narratives.

That displeasure extended to the series because, honestly, the storytelling is shit. Every season of the Walking Dead boils down to a formula. Exciting opening episode, episodes where nothing happen, kill a semi-major character to make the audience feel something, episodes where nothing happens, fairly exciting season finale. Yawn.

The fact that there are two Walking Dead series now and 'Hannibal' is gone is a travesty.

8. What show do you love that everyone hates?
-I really thought NBC's 'Dracula' could have been something given more time. I dug the twist on the established mythos and would've liked to see where it would've gone. Very satisfying finale, though.

9. What was your most recent instance of geeking out that literally no one else you know understood why?
-Marble Hornets recently released their film 'Always Watching,' one of the first major films about the Slender Man. The movie is a mixed bag, but there was a major geek-out moment for me. Towards the end of the movie, the heroes go to find a surviving Slender victim at an asylum. A tall individual approaches from the end of the hallway and they all freak out. It turns out to be a tall old man who asks "Have you seen him? The man who isn't there? Of course you haven't. He isn't there."

Why did I geek out? That old man is Angus Scrimm, the legendary actor who plays the Tall Man, the chief villain of the 'Phantasm' film series and one of the Slender Man's inspirations.

10. Favorite episode of your favorite show?
Favorite show is 'Mystery Science Theater 3000,' and my favorite episode is 'the Touch of Satan.' "There's been a walnut uprising."

11. Besides MLP, what are your favorite and least favorite cartoons today?
Favorite? Now that 'Phineas and Ferb' has ended, probably 'Rick and Morty' and 'Gravity Falls.' Least favorite? 'Teen Titans Go,' 'Clarence,' and 'Uncle Grandpa.'

12. Favorite video game?
'Red Dead Redemption.'

13. Do you have story ideas that you want to write, but don't want to start because of other obligations?
-Two actually.

'The Wicker Mare' is a ponified take on 'the Wicker Man' with elements of 'the Wicker Tree.' Twilight Sparkle and Shining Armor are sent to investigate a filly named Sweetie Belle's disappearance in the little town of Ponyville, where the residents worship the sun itself, not Celestia.

'Nopony Does It Better' features Rainbow Dash writing her own series of novels featuring a secret agent named Rainbow Blitz. The story balances between Blitz's adventures and Dash's sudden success. A love letter to the James Bond films.

14. SHOW US YOUR FACE!!!!!!
-If you insist.

14. SHOW US YOUR FACE!!!!!!

Alternate response.

Dude!!! You're a fellow Mstie! Wait, did I know that? I don't think I did... Did I?

You're welcome.:trollestia: And thank you for recommending Archmage. I already know "Windfall" is good- anything that eclipsed it definitely seems worth my time, and three chapters in I haven't changed my mind. Though, as I commented thereon,

I'll admit to relief. Something about the last couple chapters- Twilight having to schedule a block of time for her friends the next day, phrasing which sounded like she was looking for an excuse not to bring them to Canterlot, her noted disconnection from her family- made it seem like this was one of those stories which starts off with her having grown obsessed with her work/studies to the point of eroding all her relationships despite explicitly studying friendship.
