Behold the majesty . . . now why couldn't they post a better picture of it?

Today, I shall be heading to Walmart (insert fashionable anti-Walmart joke meant to make me sound sophisticated and with-it but actually serving to make me sound like a jerk here) to see if I can acquire the newly released canon map of Equestria, which I understand is a Walmart-exclusive.

Yo, Hasbro, what's with all these specific-store exclusives?  Knock that off.

Anyway, this image, which appeared on EqD, is the only picture of the map I know of.  I cannot make out many of the legends on it, so I'm hoping to get my own in order to make my fanfics more show-accurate.  I'm not sure why I'm bothering to do that, considering that I write fanfics about covert assassins, druggee ponies addicted to sassafras, and demons from hell, but, hey, I gotta have standards.

I worked really hard to figure out where Canterlot was relative to Ponyville.  After estimating the position of the sun relative to Ponyville's windmill and the image of Canterlot in the background, I came to the conclusion that Canterlot was to the southeast.  It is actually to the northeast, and that's what I get for estimating the position of the sun in a cartoon show.

I'm going to make a few slight geographical alterations to both Assassinate Princess Celestia! and Princess Trinity.  These will only be minor changes, although Princess Trinity is probably going to get a more thorough edit before the next chapter goes up; these won't be major plot changes, but just a few fixes to make the story more EqD-worthy.  In particular, Tungsten Steve's loyalty to Inkie Pie needs to be fleshed out, a few quirks in my descriptions of Inkie's humongous mecha need to be improved, and Inkie's sorrow over the loss of her companions needs a shift in emphasis.  This will put the princess/Inkie plot-line on a more solid foundation.

I can't help but notice that the gateway to Tartarus appears nowhere on the map (at least, I can't find it).  Neither does Hoofington.  That means I still have room to play, so for Princess Trinity, I'm going to shore up my vague geography and place Tartarus in the badlands in the map's southeast corner.  Hoofington can be just north of that, near that swamp.  Otherwise, the layout is much as I envisioned, with frozen wastes to the north and deserts to the south.  This works well for me, as one of Princess Trinity's three interconnected plots will involve a globe-trotting McGuffin hunt.

After I finish a current, minor project, I will work on the next chapter of Assassinate Princess Celestia!  My apologies for the slow updates; I don't know how others do it, but I can't crank this stuff out that fast.  I like to believe it's because my personal standard of quality is unusually high, but it's probably really because I'm sluggish.

After that, I want to get the next chapter of Princess Trinity out before season 3 shows up to joss it.  Depending on how badly I get jossed, I'll either tweak it to conform or slap an alternate-universe tag on it.  The story is supposed to occur only a few months after the wedding, so I guess it gets jossed either way.

Hey look, nestled in the San Palomino Mountains is Applewood, the entertainment capital of Equestria! I guess this means that Los Pegasus is the equine version of Los Angeles, my hometown.

Hmm... I see Appleloosa is close to Dodge Junction and the Badlands, where the Buffalo live (?). At the very least, the story I'm working taking place in this area won't get jossed by the new Equestrian geography.

Well, for all us writing fanfics involving Princess Cadence, we'll have to take into account that she's now apparently co-ruler along with Shining Armor of the Crystal Empire/Kingdom in the Frozen North.

We don't know Cadence's exact relationship to the Crystal Kingdom yet.  She might be ruler already, or she might become ruler at some point in the show.

You're right to point to the uncertainty, since all I'm going off on are the three cryptic descriptions from the crystal ponies toy line:

"Welcome to the CRYSTAL EMPIRE, a magical place full of hidden secrets! The ponies shine and sparkle here!" So, there's some place called the Crystal Empire, in the Frozen North, with shiny and sparkly ponies with something to hide!

"PRINCESS CADANCE and SHINING ARMOR share a big responsibility! They lead the CRYSTAL EMPIRE together!" Cadence and Shining Armor seem to be the rulers of the Crystal Empire. Yes, I'm wondering why Princess Luna doesn't also get her own kingdom, so, you know, she can actually get a chance to do some administrative work for a change.

"PRINCESS CELESTIA and PRINCESS LUNA believe that PRINCESS CADANCE will bring happiness to the CRYSTAL EMPIRE!" So, it seems that either Cadence and Shining Armor haven't yet taken over rule of the Crystal Empire and basked their subjects with the power of their love by "Ballad of the Crystal Ponies," or else they already have but the crystal ponies just aren't flourishing for some reason, hence the Main Six song from the trailer.

Durgh!!!  Don't show me those things.  The CRYSTAL EMPIRE makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit.

Let's take a look at all the past pony types they could have drawn on--sea ponies, flutter ponies, princess ponies, sparkle-eye ponies, big brother ponies, and did I mention sea ponies???  And what do they give us when they add a new pony type?  Crystal ponies.  Ponies made out of rock.  Woo hoo.

I'm going to sorely dislike the crystal ponies unless they have a kick-awesome backstory as cool and neato as the backstory of the sparkle-eye ponies, who went blind working in a mine while enslaved to an evil wizard, followed Applejack in a revolt and killed the wizard, and received their sight again when crystal shards from the wizard's exploding magical throne got lodged in their eyes.*  Anything less cool than that might make me ragequit.

*This sort of thing is why G1 is still the best G.

I managed to track down the MLP comic with the sparkle-eye ponies:

Wow, that's certainly a different AJ than the clumsy one I remember from the TV pilot.

Bringing back the sea ponies sounds nice, but I'd imagine ruling a kingdom under the sea would be difficult for an alicorn princess and her unicorn husband.

I forgot to mention that now we know (roughly) the location of the Dragon Kingdom in SDL.

You don't mess with Applejack.  Applejack is best background pony.
