The new chapter of Glim currently has three precision F-Strikes in it, and a few uses of 'shit'.
Should I keep the language G-rated despite my feeling that strong language is required? The chapter itself isn't G-rated at all, and all the swears fit. I mean, everything gets really serious here, and 'bucking' doesn't really cut it.
What do you think?

Who cares? A few swears never hurt anyone. I mean, you take some fuck and some shit and you might get a pissed off mod with a stick up their ass trying to kill the story, but I really doubt it. Who in their right mind would dare to question the almighty Smayds?
The sake of the story is infinitely more important than "the characters in a show originally intended for little kids don't swear normally".
Serious scenes warrant serious language. Glim is rated "Teen" anyway, so feel free to let the Cluster/Atomic F-Bomb loose if necessary to the plot

Personally? I dunno, I think "bucking" is sort of the "frack" of the pony world. IE, it's an F bomb ponyfied, and should be treated as such. I understand a lot of people use it to dodge the censor and as a result it seems a little softer, but really, shouldn't it?
I mean, while we're on the topic of the F bomb, haven't you ever encountered a situation where it was inadequate? I know I haven't, because it's our master swearword of choice. I mean, I'd think a word that describes "eating the eyeballs from his/her skull" would be a worse swearword than an F bomb, but we don't have that word, so we don't think about it.
Anyway, in short, I think buck is equivalent to an F bomb in Equestria, and should be treated as such, even if WE the readers think it's a little silly sounding.
Use what is felt needed.
It really depends on the feel of the story. In Glim, I could easily see it being used without a problem. It's a more adult story with adult themes, so actual swear words, used judiciously, would not seem too out of place.

I was getting at the fact that we can think of worse things than what fuck and by extension "skullfuck" describe, but we lack convenient shorthand for them, so as a result fuck and skullfuck become our gold standard. Likewise, buck is the gold standard of the pony world, simply because they lack fuck, just as we lack a pithy word for fates worse than skullfuck.
This has to be the foulest linguistics discussion ever.

Pretty much just answered your own question there
I suppose I am (pardon the pun), bucking the trend here, but I have never run into any situation where I have felt either of those words were needed. Seeing as how in the English language, we have several words that mean the exact same thing, I do not understand why those particular words should have any stronger a meaning than any other.
In regards to your question though. Feel free to use them if you feel it will help the story.
