Short version: remember that Non-pony D&D story I once wasted all of your time with? Well, over on 4Chan's /tg/ (traditional games) board, I finally managed to find someone who was willing to draw Iliira. So for the first time in...let's see...oh wow, 16 years, in another month that will be literally half my life - for the first time in the 16 years that I've had the character of Iliira in my head, I finally have a good visual representation of her!
Le happy me.
(Technically I would have preferred it if there was some suggestion as to her having black skin, but I was so thrilled to finally have art for her that I didn't mind)
Well, that's really awesome. :) Someone doing fanart of your characters can be a rather generous thing for them to do.
Very nice picture, my kudos to the artist. She looks so cute too.
Just... just don't tell her I said that. She is a drow and... well I'd rather not be murdered in my sleep.
Fanart is always a delight. Especially when it's nice art, like here!

Iliira was born on the surface and raised by a human innkeeper. The deepest she's been underground is cellar of her father's inn, and she's been deathly afraid of spiders ever since she was a kid and woke up to a large one on her pillow staring at her. Also in more concrete D&D terms she's Chaotic Good, and in personality terms she bares a strong resemblance to Lina Inverse.
Heck, on the reference material I provided the drawfriend Anon one of my notes was "note how she doesn't have a look of perpetual disdain that most drow have: Iliira's lead a happy life."
(That was always my biggest problem finding some kind of preexisting art to use for her: almost all drow have narrow, mean-looking expressions on their face ranging from "I guess I can tolerate your company for a few minutes" to "my spiders won't go hungry tonight, I see." Iliira doesn't look like that).
Dawwww! She's adorable!

Had a go at darkening the skin (print + pencil + scanner). It turned out...okay. Fortunately I still have the original, and the pencil work looks much better in real life.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I'm actually finally getting to play D&D! Friend is running a 5E game, specifically the Hoard of the Dragon Queen campaign, which means I'm finally getting to actually play Iliira; prior to this whenever a chance to play D&D would come up it would be me DM'ing and everyone else playing. Iliira's current stats, if'n anyone's interested.

Very cool looking!
Actually, your drawing kind of hit on a reason that I've always liked Drow more as a non-evil race than an evil one. It's the whole visual aesthetic that comes with their color. If I can get a little art major up in here, white and black are at the opposite ends of the tonal value scale. It makes for a very striking visual for a character, I think.
Congratulations on getting a D&D game going though! Always nice to have a regular gaming group. I still need to find a new one myself, but a job takes priority, alas.
Congratulations! This piece looks great and its amazing to see an original character be brought to 'life' in such a manner. Iliira has a great design and really carries a different sort of tone or energy to what is usually seen in Drow art work, great piece!
Say, I may be doing an ar request soon, mind if I ask how you went about describing/requesting this piece, I've never done it before?

Isn't the second one Sylvanas?

I basically just piled everything I wanted into a single image and posted it in a drawfriend thread, hang on...ah, here we go. One of the things I've learned is that as much as artists ask for as much detail as possible, actually typing out too much detail or description will turn most of them off. So instead I provided pictures a few basic requests.

(note the drawfriend went off in his own direction with the pose, but I'm more than okay with that.)

Awesome, thanks for the tip, interestingly enough this is actually what I had in mind for doing as well beyond a general description it would mostly be along the lines of 'hair like this or outfit like this' ETC. Thanks for the example!
