Season Eight Episode Reviews: Molt Down

This week is a Spike episode? What a re-”molt”-ing development this is!

Let's look at “Molt Down,” the episode that will surely be perfectly normal and have no long-lasting repercussions on a character's appearance.

Season Eight Episode Reviews: Break Up Break Down

I dread going into this week's episode. For today, we discuss matters of the heart. Romance, love, heartbreak, and all that rot. Which means we run right into the most loathsome of all fandom constructs, the kind of thing that destroys friendships and leaves the most brilliant of minds curled up helplessly in a corner, foaming from the mouth:

    SHIPPING.

On the Tommy Oliver video · 2:54am Jun 7th, 2015

I'll give him one thing, his departure was not the trainwreck that was Digibrony's. That guy basically fell into the same trap ("People are yelling at me because I said I didn't like an episode, so the whole fandom is shit"), but Digibrony reacted by basically telling everyone to f*** off, creating a series of videos where he was basically a washed-up drunk monologueing about irrelevant crap, and finally severing ties with the show entirely after "Twilight's Kingdom." Tommy stuck it out a bit longer...but yeah, there is a very loud group of fans out there that will harass and target you for having a negative feeling on Friendship is Magic.

Allow me to put this as bluntly as possible: Friendship is Magic is not perfect. It's a children's cartoon based around a toyline and created to promote said toyline. The fact that it gave us such a good cast of characters, well-done episodes and adventures, an imaginative setting, and genuine entertainment was just a bonus. There will always be good episodes and bad episodes, and sometimes you will disagree with someone on whether a particular installment was worth watching or not. The problem is that nobody on the Internet is an adult. When actual mature adults disagree on something, they respect the other person's opinion, perhaps state a quick rebuttal expressing their own opinion, and leave it at that. The Internet is populated by infants who cry and scream at the slightest provocation, and their loud shrieks drown out whatever attempts at honest discourse are trying to be made.

As someone who went through the same thing from the other side (liking an episode most people hated), I went through the same shit. And for a while, it was dark. But I'm over that.

As for the rest of the video? Just more of the reason I stopped watching Tommy Oliver after the "Equestria Games" video. Tommy can be a huge asshole, and he's in top form here. Not only does he pretty much piss on the fandom, but he takes time to shred the analysis community and other reviews (implied to be ILoveKimPossibleALot and Silver Quill) as hacks who get by on recycled assets and are popular because they preach to the choir about the wonders of the show. It doesn't seem to occur to him that they may genuinely like the fucking show still, and their reviews, which are their opinions, are apparently not worth anyone's time because they're different from his. You want to know the way to leave a fandom?

YOU LEAVE.

No grandstanding, no big speeches, and no final castigation. You simply walk away. People might still pester you, and you'll have to remind them that you're no longer a part of the community, but eventually they will stop. Creating a big song-and-dance video about how vile bronies are and how mean they are is not only a cry for attention, but invites further scorn and frustration from everyone. To bring up someone else who did the same thing, there was Chad Rocco a couple years ago. Yes, calling him out on my blog was in bad form, and I admit that. But he nevertheless accused anyone who liked Season Three of poisoning the show and dedicated his tumblr to mocking every single episode (of a show he was never watching anymore, mind) in some fashion. (To the point where he joked that Discord should blow his brains out...about two days before JewWario's suicide.)

BTW, if CR somehow reads this, I loved your video on The Geek.

My point is, a reviewer wants to leave because parts of the fandom can't help being assholes. Maybe we can learn to stop being such asses to people that dare to have opposing opinions. And that includes the reviewers.

I can agree that Tommy handled his departure pretty badly (although despite his vitriol his latest video still has a surprisingly positive like/dislike ratio). If nothing else, however, he probably should have made an actual rant video as opposed to going off on a giant tangent in the middle of what was otherwise labeled as an ordinary review. Still, I can understand his frustration in the matter, so I can't really blame him for losing his cool either.

Mostly though, I'm going to miss hearing from him on each new episode. Agree or disagree, I always thought he at least had something interesting to say. And while I'd hardly go so far as to say the rest of the analysis community are just pandering fame seekers, very few of them have ever managed to consistently excite me enough to follow them either.

I honestly fell out of watching Digibrony, and by extension, Tommy Oliver, a long time ago. I still feel a vague sadness seeing another big name in the analysis community go down in flames, though.

And I'm absolutely with you on leaving fandoms or shows with the good grace to not make a fucking "SHOW" about it. That's just such drama-queen, shit-stirring behavior that makes you come off as an asshole to everyone.

I swear to god, when I saw the title of the blog, I thought you were talking about the Power Ranger.

Made me frustrated enough to rant about it in a Skype group.

It's just... omfg so fucking stupid. "Leaving the fandom" videos are nothing more than attention-grabbers.

3128878

I wish I was. If the Green/White/Red Zeo/Red Turbo/Black Dino Ranger had chewed the fandom out, that would have actually been pretty neat.

3128831

The idea of "leaving" a fandom is probably the one dumb thing Bronies have done/created.

It's harldy anything bonies "created". People have been making a big deal about leaving fandoms on the internet for as long as there have been fandoms on the internet. This is nothing new.

3128953

Geeze, Tommy should be his own team at this point.

Anyway...this is a shame. I like analysing stuff, and its a shame when a reviewer decides to leave (particularly when its under bad circumstances).

Still, I guess if he doesn't like the show anymore, he should move on; he shouldn't have to deal with a show and a fandom he doesn't enjoy anymore. Best of luck for his future projects though.

Yeup... and it would be EPIC! :raritystarry:

...though two red rangers is just a wee bit unbalanced. As he passed the Turbo powers to TJ, however, maybe those shouldn't count anyway. :applejackunsure:

Meh. Jesse's was more entertaining.

3129230

What, you kidding? Imagine two Red Rangers both fighting over being in charge, White being self-righteous about having literally descended from on high,(evil) Green is the Group Starscream trying to screw everyone over, while Black just shakes his head in shame.. It'd be hilarious!

So glad I never got involved in the analysis arm of the fandom. c.c

It's amazing how so many Bronies on the Internet can still act like childish shit faces when the show teaches love and tolerance. Guess only most of us got the message.

I hope Tommy finds happiness in other places. If he wasn't finding it in the community anymore, fine.

3129388 it's a misnomer anyway. Some of the best analysis was being done by I'mDrowningInHorseshoes, who was actively parodying the serious reviewers. Drwolf does some good work as well, and he's not jaded with the show.

I follow people like Dr. Wolf and Scribbler solely for the fic readings. :B

3129504 And that's fine, but he is a decent one to check out. I don't really care about the analysis, I come up with my own conclusions, but I do enjoy listening to people talk about what they liked or disliked.

3129428 Have you ever considered that the show doesn't actually teach love and tolerance (at least not exclusively), and that it was a single group of people's interpretation of what it means to be a better person that eventually blew up into a catchphrase that turned out to be quite ironic for several members of the greater whole? For instance, where was the love and tolerance for Gilda and Trixie way back in Season 1? Not in the fandom, but in the show?

3129719 As far as Trixie and Gilda go, my answer is that, they didn't want their kindness. Pinkie was willing to let her nastiness go and she threw a party for her. But Gilda was still being a jerk and it blew up in her face. That's the best answer I can give, it's been a long time since I've seen those episodes.

And I'd it was some people's interpretation of the shows lessons, that's a pretty good way if thinking. It's just a brief way of getting the point across. It's the Internet and we like things fast.

3129756 Pinkie threw that party so Gilda would improve her attitude, or in her own words, to "turn that frown upside-down". There's a difference between just putting up with someone's behavior, and actively trying to change it.

I'll admit that I was never a big fan of Tommy's stuff, but I will admit that the video got me thinking. Not so much a "Yeah, this fandom is full of vipers!", but just the general approach some people have to enjoying things and sharing with others.
I always find that at the end of the day, stuff like hobbies and fandoms are only a small part of who you are and you always have the choice to do whatever you want. If you don't like a show or grow distant from it, you're not obligated to keep around or keep the wheel going. Just move on, and if people ask, just say "Sorry, I just have no interest man." Yet, to be honest, Tommy brought this mess of a situation on himself.

Tommy, like many others unfortunately, chose to stick around because they felt they owed the fandom something (and at least to the level of becoming famous, this is true). They valued a few of the fans they had from the fandom and so keep on because of them, not the large majority who only buffer the view count. But they still have to deal with the large majority, and as a result, they're more likely to get burnt out, jaded, or drained because suddenly they're forcing something that isn't stimulating to them for a crowd that drowns out the few they truly did content for.

In short, it's good to have breaks, or move on. I don't agree in that it should be done in a flurry of angry words (I debate if Tommy did so here), but regardless what matters is that he keeps discussing and serving those who have interest in talking, not just pandering to people. All too often I see people pander to others and this only feeds the idea of entitlement to them. This to me needs to stop.

So in general, I wish Tommy Oliver best of luck to him. It would be great if you could visit the MLP stuff every so often, but that's not for me to decide.

Bronies are repulsive sub-human mutants and deserve to be told honestly that they suck sanatorium through a tube and that X content creator hates them. Nothing wrong with that, it's called not being an asskisser, maybe you should try it sometime, perhaps it'd make you less perpetually depressed.

You're audience are shit heads, myself especially.

BTW, if CR somehow reads this, I loved your video on The Geek.

I liked that vid, too. And as Familiar Faces was intended to remind, that episode introduced me to a new character in DC that is, really, a welcome, if short-lived, sight away from the 'oh, so DAAAAAARK' verse of comic-book media.

I'm honestly not a big fan of Tommy Oliver. His MLP analysis videos are not bad and I will admit that there a couple of videos of him that I enjoyed(2 to be honest). It's just that he gets a bit nit picky on the show. I know that there are other Annalists video reviewers like DRWolf, ILoveKPAlot and Silverquill that do the same thing. Yet I don't have a problem with those three because at least the videos were pleasant to watch.

For example: A reason why I love DrWolf is that when he reviews an episode of the show he only focuses on the actual episode itself and evaluate it on it's own and gives his honest thoughts on it whether he liked it or not. Not only that I love the way he talks. I'm not saying that he makes jokes or puns. I'm saying that he talks in a very calm yet professional way in that I'm entertained while feeling relaxed at the same time.

With Tommy on the other hand it makes him sound like a pretentious douche. In that he literary overthinks the "Cartoon" Logic of the show. And while I'll admit that the show does have it's own hiccups(and trust me it has) I at the same time I'm aware that it's just a show made for entertainment purposes only.

Now on his video of him retiring from the fandom. Now whether he wants to retire or not is not the issue for me. If he wants to move on onto other things that's fine. It's his choice.
My issue is more with the video he made. Did he really needed to raise a fuss over this? If he had an issue with the trolls flaming him for disliking the episode why couldn't just he ignore them?(Logically it's the mature thing to do.)
Not to mention when he started to go on a tirade on the fandom crapping on everyone it's where I immediately lost respect for him.
Sorry but that's not cool in my book.
