    Old Stories

They say that everything old is new again. Sometimes that's true, I think.

    G5 - Where is Sunny's Mom?

Where, indeed, is Sunny's mother? We see Argyle, her dad, and the movie very strongly implies he's dead -- or has been missing for years, presumed dead -- but there's no sign of her mother anywhere.

Similarly, Sprout's mother Phyllis features prominently, but there's no sign of his father.

    Dune - go see it

What the title says, basically. The new Dune movie is seriously good, and if you like Dune, or sweeping SF epics in general, you should go see it, preferably on the biggest screen you can. It's gorgeous! The movie follows the book much better than the Lynch film did, and lets the environment play a big role, as is fitting.

Just in case it needs to be said:

If you haven't already, go get vaccinated against Covid-19, ASAP. The vaccines are safe and they work.

Do not try any of the purported "cures" like hydroxichloroquin or, sigh, ivermectin.

In case it wasn't obvious yet...

No, I do not want Nazis in this fandom.

I don't want stories about cutesy Nazi OCs, who exist to give "ironic" cover to actual Nazis and racists, and to normalize Nazi presence in MLP fandom.

Lost Treasure of Griffonstone - Wow! (Spoilery, of course) · 8:27pm May 23rd, 2015

I had high hopes for this one, as I'm always a sucker for this sort of fantasy adventure / world-building stuff, and I've wanted to see the show do more with griffons ever since Gilda's initial appearance in Griffon the Brush-Off all the way back in Season One.

Happily, the episode delivers. :pinkiehappy:

The adventure part works nicely, with monsters and perils and Rainbow Dash having another gorge-related accident. The friendship part is equally good, with some quality Pinkie-Gilda moments and an adorable Dash-Gilda flashback. And the worldbuilding part... oh boy, I loved that!

In Greek mythology, the Arimaspi were a race of one-eyed people warring with griffons who lived in the Hyperborean mountains, stealing their gold. Guess what we had here? :twistnerd: I love how much the show taps into classic myth and legend, and appreciate this as a nice myth Easter egg to the adult audience, because the primary demographic sure isn't going to notice the connection.

Today I learned! Thanks for the mythology pointer.

Well noticed. I was aware of the 'gold guarding griffins' myth but not that of the Arimaspi.
