All I remember from the episode is Rainbow with Twilight's hair style. fc09.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/140/b/5/dash_hair_swap_by_austiniousi-d65wz1n.png

It was memorable with Dashie imitating Twiiy's style, but no more spoilers for you, mister.:duck:

THIS EP WAS AMAZING, GO WATCH IT

Griffin kingdom... Also Griffins are greedy yet still reasonable to a point.

Pinkie seemed pretty attracted to that rock statue...

A bit of a sappy ending, but wth, it is a kids show. Until that, puuuuure awesomeness. I only got one thing to say. GILDA IS BACK!

I liked the world building and that one flashback to when Rainbow and Gilda were kids.

R.I.P. EVERY SINGLE FUCKING GRIFFON HEADCANON EVER
November 12, 2010 - May 23, 2015

Press F to Pay Respects.

I was so glad they gave redemption to Gilda!

In all a very sweet episode, I hope to see more like this in the future.

It was also a fantastic and spot-on allusion to Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in the climax scene, with Gilda playing both roles of Henry "Indiana" Jones, Jr.'s and Henry Jones, Sr.'s parts in having the Idol of Boreas just within touch of her fingertips (talons), and yet ultimately making the right choice to let it go.

Now I need to go watch Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (my personal favorite of the series) again... :twistnerd:

i can't bleve that gilda is in this!!!:pinkiegasp:

3091394 Oh christ. Imagine what Rarity would say if she saw that...

Red Flag went up so fast when I heard Griffon and Pinkie Pie + Rainbow Dash going there but I'm so glad it happened.

Also, show of hands: Who actually expected Gummy to make the cake at the end of the episode. I actually thought he'd might do it.

Well, this episode was gilded. . . and Gildad!

3091437
If you ask me, the part where the Idol of Boreas fell into the chasm is more reminiscent of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, when the Holy Grail suffered the same fate.

totally epic!! i knew it! i knew it! gilda was good!!!!
and now i'm already starting to see pinkie/the griffin king statue ship. :twilightoops:

3091490

hey if they can ship a rock I can see a statue being shipped.

So Pinkie Pie is back to talking to inanimate objects again.. :moustache:

It was a good episode all around.

It was a interesting episode, but I don't understand the thinking behind it. It was basically primed for a racist (sorry, "spieciest") moral, with both Rainbow Dash and Gilda bringing the disparaging comments towards griffons/ponies (down to Rainbow Dash throwing out the old "I know some of them who are jerks, which makes them all jerks" line of thinking that is so commonly heard from actual racists), and yet the episode goes on as if nothing amiss ever happened, and ends without ever addressing it. I dunno, maybe the idea was to keep it low key and show that Rainbow was wrong about them without directly saying so, but if that was the idea, it was so subtle that I don't think it came across very well.

3091421
Yup, I have a feeling that many headcannons will be shattered by the end of this season. :applejackunsure:

Adventure, worldbuilding and griffons, oh my!

This is exactly the kind of episode I've been hoping we would get at one point or another. We got some nice history and showcasing of the griffons, and we got it confirmed that all of them have names that start on G. I've always wondered if that was the case or not.

I also thought it was cool to see Gilda again, even if I did think she got a bit too nice a bit too quickly. Curse of the 25 minute limit strikes again. That said, it was still neat to see her and Dash reconcile.

"You are right, Pinkie! And you've got amazing hair! [normal] Oh King Grover, you old charmer!"

It look like Pinkie is into older dudes, Gryphons, Kings or just stone statues :)

Little Gilda is adorable!

As for the episode, while it wasn't perfect, I found it to be quite enjoyable as a whole. The world-building and Gilda's return were both excellent in my opinion, as was Rainbow's impression of Twilight.

3091487

Is that not what I said in my original comment?

The climax scene from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was where, after the treacherous Elsa Schneider falls into the chasm after trying to reach down for the Holy Grail rather than up for Indy's hands. Indy falls into the chasm as well, but is caught by his Henry Jones, Sr., who pleads with his son to reach up as well. Indy, however, can touch the Holy Grail with his fingertips and starts to reach downward like Elsa; until his father, who has spent his life's work chasing (questing?) after the Holy Grail, calls out to his son as "Indiana" (rather than "Junior"), telling Indy to "let it go", and this father pulls up son to (relative) safety.

Thus why I commented that Gilda played both roles of the Jones boys in the climax scene of this week's episode.

Heh, even though I recalled that (Last Crusade) scene purely from memory, I still want to see Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade again still.

3091537 Especially after the next episode. :twilightoops:

Goodbye, 5 years of background pony fanon.

Good episode, but afrer looking at Arimaspi, and his... appearance, I can't help but wonder...

Arimaspi looks awfully goatish, and we aren't given an explanation for why he did what he did, he just showed up and tried to steal a treasure, and he died in the attempt. That said, could he have been working on someone's orders? Could Grogar be the final big bad for this season?

3091556

telling Indy to "let it go".

Sorry, I had to.

Warning! Spoilers below!

Well... What can I say? That was better than I was expecting and better than I imagined!

* World-building
* Gilda redemption
* Pinkie using the Fourth Wall for demolitions practice
* Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade reference
* Excellent moral about having to be the first to act if you want to make things better
* Pinkie understood the Griffons better than Rainbow!
* Cute Filly Rainbow and Fledgeling Gilda!

This was easily the best of the season so far, leaving last week's episode in the dust!

So, it seems that the 'Lost Treasure' wasn't the idol at all. It was the Griffons' unity and community as a people. Without that, they collapsed into decline and greater and greater ruin. The devastation of the library illustrated that - They no longer cared about their history and culture (apart from a few despised elders who remembered the old ways). That, I imagine, is why so many griffons left the Griffon Kingdom for Equestria: at least in the Pony nation, there is hope, progress and, frankly, a working community of which they can be a part.

Who would have imagined that Gilda would be her people's Clover the Clever (or possibly Private Pansy or Smart Cookie), the griffon who taught the lessons of Friendship and thus reunited and revitalised her people? It's the long, hard path for her but nothing worthwhile for a proud people could possibly be easy.

To me, the key scene was the The Last Crusade reference, when Gilda chose to save Rainbow and Pinkie over getting the treasure that, it seems, she really did believe was the source of the Griffons' greatness as a people. When she turned her back on the gold in favour of her friends, she transcended the cynicism of her fallen culture and set herself, and her fellow griffons, on the path to a greater future.

Could there be a Mayor Gilda of Griffonstone in the future? I'm sure she would not want it but ponies and griffons do tend to give titles and positions to those who show them the way to the light...

Rating: 9.5/10 (holding back from giving it a 10 because I feel this season can only get better!)

3091529 I think the implication was that there are no magic solutions to an entire place ( I know, weird giving all the magic around...) but that Gilda´s act of kindness will eventually save the entire kingdom, that´s what I got.
3091437 Yeah, same here! That looked almost identical to last Crusade
3091537 good. I´m of the idea that the show should stray away from the most popular fandom theories...and even so this episode confirmed the one of Gilda being a scaredy cat when Dash first met her, I remember that being popular back in the day.

3091572 Queen. Queen Gilda. Probably not likely, I know, but it would be entertaining.

Best episode until the Friendship Police came and ruined the nice cynicism the gryphons had.

I didn't like the pacing, they took too long to get to Griffonstone, and Gilda's turnaround had to be jam-packed into a matter of seconds. They didn't really the message beyond one griffon, and a second by proxy, and I'm not convinced they did enough to make a major change.

Guys, bad news.

Next episode's not airing until 13 June.

Are we just not going to mention that giant goat-cyclops thing?

3091634 Actually, when I think about it. Aramaspi stealing the idol is a bit like Smaug stealing the Arkenstone.

I think that skull of the demon who stole the idol would've been a better replacement.

Also. Rainbow imitating Twilight?!? LMAO!!!:rainbowlaugh::rainbowlaugh::rainbowlaugh:

3091634 I loved that thing. It was basically a redone Grogar from G1.

One thing I really like is that it is Pinkie that tries to bring Gilda and Dash back together as friends and that Pinkie wants to be friends with Gilda.

Also I think GIlda hating ponies and Dash disliking Griffins at the start of the story is more of a manifestation ofthier anger at their loss of friendship than actually hating the other. When you see both of them in previous times neither seems to dislike the other intrinsically so I think they are more angry at each other than being a true racist (speciest) idea. You see this happen in real life all he time with groups. I had two friends that broke up as a couple and their animosity for each other breaking up colored their relationships with both groups they were involved in (one was in a fraternity and the other the related sorority). Before the break up no issues with either group with each other afterwords they eyed the other group with slight contempt until such a time the wounds healed and things returned to normal.

3091556 are you done because you are not the ray of sunshine you make yourself out to be

3091559
Rest in peace, beautiful headcannon. :fluttercry:

Question: why is Twilight's knowledge on the kingdom of Griffonstone so outdated? I honestly can't puzzle this one out. Maybe there's an explanation, but I'm certainly not seeing it yet.

Perhaps it was just some shoddy research work, but that doesn't exactly make sense considering the fact that this is Twilight Sparkle. You know, that alicorn that's super smart and was the personal protege of Princess Celestia? Of course, at the time of her research, she was probably a unicorn, but still. How could her resources not mention the fact the kingdom is so poor? I know she was only shown to have the history book, but why was it just the history book? Wouldn't Twilight try to learn as much as she could about something? She's apparently been interested ever since Gilda came to Ponyville, so she's had plenty of time to get up to date information, not just an old history book.

Then I wondered if maybe ponies just didn't have too much knowledge on griffons, like dragons. But if that's the case, why? Ponies seem to have pretty in depth knowledge of the history of the griffon kingdom, so why would the information just stop at that? Wouldn't someone be like, "Hey, all of our current information on Griffonstone been cut off. Maybe we should check up on them and see if they're okay."

In that case, ponies not having information on the current state of Griffonstone would just be silly, so they must have the info, right? But that just brings us right back to the same problem: Twilight. Sparkle. Why would her research be so incomplete? On top of that, she is now a princess. Shouldn't information like the state of another kingdom be, I don't know, kinda Important? It just doesn't make a whole lot of sense for her.

Unless... unless she did know, and it was all just a convincing act. Perhaps she was just intentionally misleading Rainbow and Pinkie to manipulate them into going. After all, who would want to pay a visit to some old, fallen kingdom that has lost all wealth and glory it once had? Perhaps Twilight was simply lying about her knowledge, trying to rope her friends into following the will of the mysterious map that she has virtually no information on, but is still shown to be oh so faithful to for some as of yet unknown, unexplained reason...

Nah, that's probably not it. Interesting headcanon though.

Really though, it didn't affect the episode too much. I just had bit of a problem with some of the logic, which happens quite often for me. Just figured I'd point it out, and again, there might be an explanation I'm just not seeing.

3091421
A salute to the fallen ideas and beliefs...
May they live long in our hearts...

How wonderful for the Griffons that they live in a society mediated entirely by market transactions.
