State of the Lemur - 05/22/2015 · 3:25am May 23rd, 2015

Just when I thought I had run out of pointless reasons to waste money on the Internet, silly!pretty shiet shows up and I cave. F'naaaa. Oh well.

I feel as though I'm at the point in my life where I'm soaking up the distractions and allowing hedonistic nonsense be the fulcrum of my existence. Usually when I've reached such a place in the past, it absorbs me entirely and I've got nothing creative to show for it. If it weren't for Austraeoh and Appledashery, I sometimes think I'd be a phantom to y'all by now.

So I watched a dayum good movie two days ago. This dayum good movie is still obsessively stuck in my head. Y'all marsupials should go see this dayum good movie.

It's not often that a film gets super hyped and yet still manages to live up to its expectations for mesa. I remember going to theatres to watch 300 and Transformers because everyone said they were ass-numbingly-good... only to come out of the experience feeling "meh." But with Fury Road, I can honestly say it's my best movie-going experience since JJ Abrams' Star Trek in 2009.

It's not a groundbreaking movie by any means. It's just a film that's... done very very well. As action films go, it does a fantastic job of introducing a gazillion different elements and then finding ways to reuse/revisit those setpieces/visualizations in ways that are creative, engaging, and--yes--explosive. And when the action isn't all action-y, the film goes to extreme lengths to make characters that are interesting, empathetic, and yet still colorful. The character "Nux," for instance, was someone that the film somehow got me emotionally attached to within the first ten dayum minutes. Out of the gate, I understood his motivation and flaws and yet still wanted him to get to some sort of catharsis, even if it seemed antithetical to the other protagonists' exploits.

I've heard Fury Road (and Mad Max in general) referred to as "post apocalyptic westerns." I'd venture to say that Fury Road is more akin to a war movie on wheels. As insane as it sounds, I've drawn multiple parallels between it and Saving Private Ryan, including the gratuitously intense intro as well as the job squad Vulvalini that show up to add meat to the climax's inevitable body count.

All in all, a good film, and one that I wouldn't mind seeing in theatres again... quite frankly.

So there's a new ask blargh thingy out there on the Internets, and it's been picking up steam pretty dayum quickly. EqG already highlighted it and the author's got a Patreon going. And this is all for good reason too. The comic's been updated almost twice daily, and it has both charm and appeal--the unique likes of which I haven't witnessed from general bronydom in a long, long time.

The art leaves... something to be desired, and it treads areas that far moister material has certainly already covered. But the comedy is cutetastical and the artist has a knack for whimsy and originality. Plus, they've already answered one of my anonymous questions already. So... yay.

Go check it out if you haven't seen it already. Perhaps for rather biased reasons, I have immense respect for any organism on the Internet that can update daily with an observable modicum of creative ingenuity. F'naa.

So yeah. I liked this episode. Who didn't like this episode? Neptune is that way.

Granted, this was the first episode I watched online with both Ponky and Props since the Season Premiere. Retail has been a female dog, lately, so this was our one opportunity in an eon. T'was a good experience, and I laughed out loud more than once--including moments of on-the-nose-gaggery.

I think the mark of a good, good pony episode is that it has moments that you're desperate to see screenshots and gifs of immediately after its broadcast. For Season Four, we got this out of the gate with Castlemaneia, and I knew I was on board for the post-alicorn-wings-era. While Season Five has been pretty dayum nifty, I feel like none of the episodes have really given me much in the way of poni poni poni gratuity. Thankfully, this episode fills up the gap, what with the naked!rarity, CMC dress-up, tearful AJ, and California... I mean Tree Hugger.

It's an episode that remembered that ponies are all about fun and silliness... silly pony funness. The absurdist zaniness was balanced just right with all of the fanservice, in my opinion, and certainly wins this kaizo lemur's respect (and envy). And yet it still manages to give the central focus--Discord--a digestible amount of character development. What I've noticed often with Discord is that the writers take into account that he's eons old, even if he acts like an arrogant child. This is exemplified in the fact that most of the lessons that he learns are often spoken by him... forced out of the dragonequus through forced self-introspection under the headlights of Fluttershy.

After Season 3 hammered in the fact that he was a "permanent" character, I wasn't entirely sure that he would... y'know... work. But thankfully, after the S4 finale and this episode, I have my faith restored. Was there ever any doubt?

NO! You are not permitted to dethrone Belle... Unless it's with Disney's princess of action!

On second thought, stick with Belle, she's cuter.

You got Horse Wife to do Shakespeare?

I- I think I love you.

I think Belle's gradually being dethroned. o_o

That's unacceptabelle!

Plus, they've already answered one of my anonymous questions already. So... yay.

That was you? Brilliant.

I think Belle's gradually being dethroned.

Obviously we must send Cinderella to the gulags.

You like daily-updating digimon? Give this a try.

I don't know how to help you with the revolution, buddy. My own Magic Kingdom's in a state of anarchy right now, we're in no shape to give foreign aid. Just remember that Belle has a whole 'nother dimension of character on Cindy.

I've been meaning to go see Fury Road, since everyone and their grandma is raving about it.

Also, Horse Wife is adorable. It's amazing how quickly it's swept through the fandom.

Funny, I blawgged about Horse Wife this afternoon too!

Fury Road is the movie that utilizes actual fake explosions and barely any cgi effects, right? And that the cars really were built and works.

I thought Applejack cried on the inside

Say, completely hypothetical question that came after reading that bit about Mad Max:

What's the chance of seeing a war on boats in Ynan?

3089969 It's how all the Mad Max films work. Give some of the older ones a look, they are classic.

3089908 We must sound the Belles of war!

3089993 Kinda emphasizes it more when she actually does cry, don't it?

Oh, and skirts? What do you suppose the odds are that Disney is working on one of those live action remakes of Beauty and the Beast?

Horse Wife has some of that Azumanga Diaoh style charm to it.

Horse Wife is best.

I don't mind the art style, honestly. I think it suits the weekly well. That may sound weird to you, but eh. Works in my head.

This episode.

This. Motherhoofin'. Episode.

I don't think I've ever laughed so hard while watching an episode of pony. Ever. Fanservice out the ass, so many references it was hard to keep up and Lyra Heartstrings doing her thing and being best background pone.

Dear God, it was amazing.

Also weed confirmed canon in Equestria. Yesss.

:trollestia:

Also, I hate you for already seeing Mad Max.

3090062

I would say its likely. If they are, I'm hoping it doesn't suck horribly as live remakes are usually cursed to do.

To summarize: Science ovens and hippy horses in post-apocalyptic Australia.

I am entirely okay with this.

3089993 Those aren't tears, that's liquid pride.

Don't worry. I will keep your Belle shrine for you. You just have to send it to Mangoland, my place.

I don't think Cinderella will dethrone Belle anytime soon. Her movie was dang good, but it was also live action so, y'know, not up your alley. I'll have to go see Mad Max soon and geek out about it with you. Then we can work on a joint project of Mad Max fanfiction. Or Mad Max / Pony fanfiction.

Mad max was fucking incredible.

Bookprincesses shall not be thus disrespected! :flutterrage:

Hardly a phantom, I've been a huge fan your writing for ages (End of Ponies is my personal fave, though East horse is just barely above it) and just didn't have the internet needed to say anything. Mobile on here is awful.

If you ever do turn into that phantom, at least youve influenced my writing and headcanons pertaining to silly horses.
