When you submit your story to the site it will be failed if you do not add a synopsis in the description.

    So, what is a synopsis?

    Let's ask Dictionary.com!

    Synopsis:

    3. a brief summary of the plot of a novel, motion picture, play, etc.

    This is a synopsis:

Twilight goes for a walk in the Whitetail Woods and encounters a mysterious creature.

    This is not:

This is my first fanfiction ever and I love FS/AJ so please read and rate!

All that is telling the reader is that the story is shipping.

But "shipping" does not a story warrant.

If you cannot add a synopsis of your story to the description, it will be failed.

    Well

How is anybody going to want to read your story if theres not a clear a description about the story itself. It just seems silly on how people do that just shipping on the description. Well even if you wanted to make a statement about this topic I'm sure not everybrony wouldn't even care to give a damn about it.

Maybe there could be a separate box for Author's Notes and Comments that could go up with the story description?

    Sigh.

Maybe I've been hanging around with academics for too long, but the average person continues to astound me. I mean, seriously. I haven't written a story, or anything fictional, in most of a decade. All I know how to write are technical reports and project proposals.

And I think this (and most of the rules here) is obvious.

Never seen the English word Synopsis before. :twilightblush: But now I know what it is too! :pinkiehappy:

    More to learn. :pinkiehappy:

Even that I did not know what it was, I still write something related to the plot of the story in the description before (if I put in) links and credits.

A good description helps to get the reader into the right mood for the fiction.

    I give this five moustaches!

But if you write your synopsis, and then write (see blog for note), and the blog entry is the one-line "Completed my first story! It's a cool crossover!" then most people aren't going to click through.

To anyone wondering if this really is an issue, the answer is of course yes. The vast majority of users don't reads the rules... on a site about reading and writing no less...

Perhaps now that they have to put effort into their synopsis, we can see a slight increase in quality?

    Maybe?

    I can hope.

As far as I'm aware, Fimfiction is meant to be a repository of MLP:FiM fanfics. Kinda like ponibooru was a repo of images.

We have our screening mostly to avoid spam and disgusting stuff like a random troll/gore pics.

Actually adding real quality control (with rules, boundaries and what goes and what doesn't) would, imo, change what fimfiction is, and just make the site a wannabe EqD.

Again, strictly in my opinon - the final say is always knighty's.

There's nothing inherently wrong with an "anything goes" system, but to someone who takes writing seriously (which I would if I actually wrote fanfiction), it's discouraging to see half of the posts on the front page devoted to basic rules because people are morons. :twilightangry2:

I don't necessarily want an EqD clone, just a place where "serious" aspiring writers can post their stories without feeling bogged down by people like the hypothetical writer in Wander D's posts.

    1. Make use of the groups feature

    2. If your story is good or has potential, you will be taken seriously especially when you seek out criticism. (I assume by serious meaning one would want to seriously improve and not necessarily be seriously famous/popular.)

    3. The quality of the stories others submit shouldn't have any effect on a serious writer's endeavors.

The good stories become apparent through stat tracking and the feature box. This site isn't really bogged down. There are enough critics and vets on this site who have time to judge serious stories. The number of bad fics does not change this.

The site itself may not be bogged down, but the mere fact that "How to format your story" is even necessary... I find that discouraging as both a reader looking for fanfiction and as a hypothetical writer looking for a community to post my own stories.  It's kind of like Rarity and the redneck window washer in Sweet and Elite.

    #48 · 48w, 1d ago · · ·

    >>235886 what's discouraging? Most of the blogs don't apply to the sensible site users; all it should tell you is that the site is popular so several overhyped joes and janes will send in a story without knowing what they're doing. If I had a meme picture to help illustrate my point, its caption would be "Welcome to the internet!"

Your alternative is Fanfiction, which is much worse, and EQD is if anything the antithesis of what you want. EQD only wants good fics from writers who don't really need help. They're not there to nurture or help develop aspiring writers. You don't want to exclusively use EQD as a writer UNLESS your goal is only to be well-known in the community. If that's your only desire in writing, then go to EQD but only when you're already a great writer. If you want instant collective feedback from an interested readerbase who will hep you improve, then Fimfiction is what you want.

From the reader-only perspective, the only disadvantage of the average quality of stories is waiting for new good stories to come around. Other than that, the site gives you dozens of ways to wade through muk via search engine filters. Check this out - most the EQD stories are just links to Fimfiction anyway, so it's already all in one place. If you *actually* want to write, which it sounds like you don't, then the last thing you should do is worry about what other writers are doing and focus on your own projects.

If we go by the sweet and elite analogy, I'm not sure who represents what. I assume the redneck represents bad fics, whereas Rarity represents good fics. The elitists are the readers, who think that the redneck (bad fics) reflect poorly on rarity's character and judgment (good fics). I'm gonna go out on a limb and say readers aren't that dumb/shallow. That analogy is poor anyway because there was nothing wrong with the window washer other than the elitists being snooty to Rarity for knowing him, which is totally immature to begin with.

I guess all I'm really saying is that I don't feel 100% comfortable using the same site as those who don't know what they're doing.  For the analogy, I pictured the redneck as the bad fics and Rarity as myself, and the elitists as my own consciousness (I'm a bit of a :fluttershyouch: IRL).

And no, I probably won't be writing anything in the near future, partly because I'm my own worst critic, but it's always on the back of my mind.
