    I'm (still) not quite dead...

I'm sorry, I am so very sorry for the lack of updates on, well, anything. A few of you have probably noticed that I've still been putting in the occasional appearance or comment, but as for chapter updates...yeah I've barely written anything for months for various reasons - work sucks, arranging a couple vacations, a falling out in my D&D group of 14 years, and just a sort of malaise that

    When you're writing a chapter...

And listening to music to keep yourself in the mood, and then you hear a song that has you suddenly realize that you've been writing the entire chapter wrong and should have instead been basing it around the song - not necessarily using the song directly (especially since that would be against site rules concerning wholesale copying of lyrics), but certainly drawing on it for inspiration.

The Good News and the Bad News

The good news is that I got a root canal on Monday. No more pain in teeth. Yay!

The bad news is that I was 3/4ths of the way through the next chapter of Midnight Castle (~5000 words) and realized that I was writing it totally wrong. I need to go back to practically the start and change up a lot, though I'm salvaging lines and paragraphs wherever I can.

Non-Pony Short Story: Star Trek! · 4:38am Mar 18th, 2015

Yet another one of these non-pony stories! The difference here is that this is a story I'm only just starting, and is still ongoing. Still, if you're in the mood for Star Trek, hopefully I'll be able to weave a compelling yarn. Also, I'll be publishing it on FanFiction.net rather than here.

Star Trek: Time & Tide & Omega
So, which takes precedence: The Temporal Prime Directive, or the Omega Directive? Good question. No one's answered it before. Which really, really kind of sucks for the crew of the U.S.S. Hydra when they find themselves in a situation where they have to pick between the two. Naturally if they don't, then the entire Federation is doomed - because these things can never be simple.

Stylistically I'm mostly taking hints from Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (the one with the whales), in that there will be moments of seriousness, notably in the beginning, but mostly I'm trying to be lighthearted. Also, while this story references a few different missions in STO, the story is original, not simply a re-telling of a mission in the game. Chronologically, though, for those who play the game, this takes place after the end of the Nimbus arc.

Not too much of a backstory to this one; the story is just an adventure being undertaken by the crew of one of my Star Trek Online characters, the Andorian Talzelyhirrnn sh'Sihl (Zelyh) and the crew of the U.S.S. Hydra. Honestly the biggest thing about this story is that I'm even using the Hydra; it's a Gallant-class, which is derived from the Defiant-class, which is an ugly-ass ship who's design I don't like. But I can get over it, mostly thanks to the ship editor allowing me to actually make something I can tolerate.

Also, here's a picture of the Hydra's senior staff, and Hydra herself.

And as a special FimFiction bonus, the crew list for Hydra (as they will be appearing in this fic)

Anyway, I hope you enjoy!

Oh, Andorians have four genders, if you're wondering what the Hell is going on there. Shen and zhen are basically female, while chan and thaan are basically male.

I'll check it out! :D

Fun so far! But you need to decide how you capitalize Sh' Sihl's name, it's all over the place :derpytongue2:

The four gender thing... never did like that. Data says Andorians marry in groups of four in 'Data's Day', Enterprise shows two genders and the novels... it doesn't make any sense to me to have four genders! I blanked all that out.

Enterprise didn't actually specify one way or another how many genders they have, and Enterprise did specify that another species, Rigellians, have four genders (in the same episode where we meet another species with three). It might not make any sense, but then again neither does a good chunk of Trek. Personally I think it makes the Andorians more exotic, so I like it.

It's sh'Sihl except at the start of a sentence, where the first S is capitalized as per English rules. sh'Sihl after a period would just bother me.

2888708 I cought a few spots where you've capitalized it as 'Sh'sihl' though.

I'm a bit rusty on my Star Trek lore... What are the Temporal Prime Directives the Omega Directives?

2889526
Temporal Prime Directive: Don't travel through time unless ordered. If you find yourself back in time for whatever reason, don't do anything to change the timeline and return to your own time ASAP (and, if you can't do that, find somewhere quiet and out of the way and spend the rest of your life there, without making any ripples). If you think the timeline has already been changed, do everything in your power to set it back to as close to the way it was as possible (i.e. First Contact). First mentioned by name in Star Trek: Voyager but was obviously in force in every prior series, for obvious reasons.

Omega Directive: Omega is a particle that has huge energy potential (way more than anything else in Trek lore), but is highly unstable. If it blows up, not only is there a sizable explosion, but it creates a rupture in the fabric of subspace proportionate to how many molecules of Omega broke down. Even a few atoms of it breaking down will create a rupture lightyears wide. A warp field cannot be created in an area of ruptured subspace, so an Omega event can shut down an entire region of space to faster-than-light travel; imagine the effect this would have if set off near a major world, like Vulcan, Qo'noS, or Bajor. The Omega directive states that if Omega is detected, Starfleet captains are allowed to do anything to ensure the safe disposal of Omega - even violate the Prime Directive itself. The Omega Directive was first introduced in Star Trek: Voyager and didn't come up in any TV series or movie since that, but it does feature in the game Star Trek Online.

So. Say you're a Starfleet captain that finds himself in orbit near Earth in the mid-20th century thanks to a time travel accident. Now let's say you detect traces of Omega on Earth.

Have fun with that. No matter what someone is gonna chew you out once you get back to your own time even if everything goes right.

Aww, I rather liked the Gallant class. It had this uniquely stubby look that somehow felt more Star Wars oriented than Star Trek's usual streamlined ships that I actually found rather charming. Been awhile since I played STO. I'll have to check this story out.

2895803
The Gallant is more tolerable than the Defiant, but I really dislike the Defiant. The lack of outrigger nacelles is what bothers me most, really - a core feature of a Cochrane-style warp drive is the outrigger nacelles, which are supposed to be able to both "see" forward, "see" backwards, and "see" each other. And also always come in pairs.

Although also the thing that bothers me about the Defiant-class is its giant shnozz. The Gallant gets rid of that, which is why I can tolerate it.

2896007
Admittedly the Defiant always looked pretty weird, which I always chalked up to it being Starfleet's first dedicated combat vessel, so whoever designed it was basically thinking purely of function and not even taking form into consideration. I do like your little variant on the Gallant, the Hydra still has that compact warship look the Defiant has but you're right that the ship concept looks ten times better with the smoother, round front and not the big nose. I did appreciate in STO that they let you do little changes to your ship's appearance like that. Of the escorts I actually liked the Saber's design the most. Kind of miss that little ship.
