R.I.P. Gary Owens (1934-2015) · 6:36am Feb 14th, 2015
I want to pay my respects to a man who left an indelible mark in the field of voiceover work. Gary Owens.
In addition to acting as Narrator for Laugh In and the Gong Show, Gary Owens was famous for voicing the Blue Falcon and Space Ghost.
What many people may not realize it that Gary Owens was almost the voice of Inspector Gadget. Don Adams would ultimately land the part, but Gary Owens read for the pilot episode.
Originally, Inspector Gadget was supposed to have a dignified voice and mustache, much like Owens. After Don Adams got the part, dialogue by Penny and Gadget was re-dubbed explaining Gadget's moustache in the pilot episode as a disguise for the holiday.
Gary Owens also voiced a character named Roger Ramjet. Seriously, how can a show with characters named Roger Ramjet and Pinky Finger not be a porno?
Gary Owens was revered and beloved by his fellow announcers and voiceover actors. This is one of many tributes to his legacy.
One of Gary Owens' first acting jobs was to narrate the 1954 Disney cartoon, Pigs is Pigs.
I'll end with some poignant words from Gary Owens.
Rest in peace, Gary Owens.
"Death is nature's way of telling you to slow down." - Gary Owens, (1934-2015)
I didn't know the guy or follow his work, but he will be missed. It's sad how many great celebrities and people continue to pass. Justin Carmical, Robin Williams, Joan Rivers, Mounty Oum, Gary Owens. They will all be missed.
Voice actors are some of the most influential yet unnoticed people in a child's life. Animated heroes and villains both leave a lasting imprint, though few ever know the names behind their voices. Rest well, Mr. Owens.
You are shitting me he died? Well fuck.
