I saw something the other day in someone's newspaper about rumors of scientists discovering the "God particle" is this it or was someone jumping to conclusions?

(My science speak isn't advanced enough to know exactly how BIG a deal this is, care to enlighten us?)

The Higgs-boson is sometimes incorrectly referred to as the 'God particle', and is essentially the basis for the theory of the standard model of particle physics. The Higgs is the reason particles have mass and behave the way they do, so the fact that CERN has evidently found it is a huge victory for the scientific field. It lends credence to the theory of the standard model, and gives us a legitimate explanation for why particles have mass, aside from 'they just do'.

4.9 sigma significance is 99.99% certainty. Findings from another group, ATLAS, boosted that significance to 5 sigma, which is essentially 100% certainty.

I like science just fine (and that's coming from a devout Catholic), I just don't care atm.

I'm having a crappy day, is all.

Why, Vargras, I didn't know you were this kind of mare :moustache:

Really though, this is awesome. I heard the hushed whispers floating around online, but got a little drunk last night and missed Brian Greene's announcement. 4th of July is awesome this year! Woohoo.

Flying cars?  I have to deal with enough lousy drivers on the ground, do we need to give them flying cars?  :pinkiegasp:

I'd give licensing for different altitudes. Drivers that perform well and have clean records will be allowed to fly higher, and inattentive teens and the like will be stuck on the ground level, so to speak.

All my dreaming aside, it's still a pretty awesome discovery. Admittedly, I might be long dead before we reap the full range of benefits.
