So... BronyCon · 1:25am
I've been hearing a lot of pretty negative things about Pixar's latest movie, Brave.
I'm just gonna go ahead and say, on the record, that I thought it was really good. Maybe not one of Pixar's best, but plenty fun. Also, bears.
It was beautiful, had great characters, and strong female leads as a bonus. Not as much of that going around as there should be.
I've heard it take a lot of flak for being predictable - I guess it was, but hey, it is fundamentally a kids movie. I thought they pulled it off well enough that it was still interesting. Oh, and I don't want to spoil too much, but there were plenty of deviations from the pretty overdone "Rebellious tomboy princess" plot.
So yeah, good flick. Good times. SleeplessBrony recommends it.
Oh, and the con was fun, too. Got me some signed MegaSweet prints. HELLZ yeah.

Say what? really?
I happen to hear quite the contrary, that it was actually a good movie, sure the idiotic critics are not screaming "Masterpiece" and it's not Toy Story 3 (honestly,I loved Toy Story 3 but most of the reason was because of my nostalgia goggles),but they are overall very positive.A bit predictable, sure, but the scenery, the characters, for once the female MC doesn't have a romantic interest and the movie explore other type of relationships.
In fact,I think I enjoyed it more than "UP".And I loved UP.
Cars 2 sure left a mark on people, huh?

This. Is. Truth.
Also, I liked Brave, even if it was predictable. It was beautiful, only formulamatic in a few places, and had a good message. Also, I'm of Scottish descent, so...bias.

Been meaning to see Brave, but the monies situation isn't that good at the moment. I remember seeing an article about this movie last year, and thinking "why don't they green light this? it looks awesome". Someday soon, I will get around to it, hopefully before it leaves theaters. Hope you recharged your creative batteries at the con!

I loved UP. Although I'm not anywhere near as old as the main protagonist of that movie, I can totally sympathize with him.

> I can totally sympathize with him.
Carl is just one of the most adorable characters from this studio. And I love the fact that an elder character can pull the whole MC deal.
I'm not anywhere near as old as him either, but I sympathize with him too.
As for Brave,I loved the relationship Merida and her parents, especially with the mother.
Lucky bastard. Talent, MS autographs, and going to BronyCon, some people just got all the luck
Also, I liked Brave as well. Pixar always make's good movies. It wasn't what I expected from the commercials really but the strength of the character and the rash action's were really well played out. It was also really funny to compliment the action and serious tones through out. Ain't no party, like a Scotsman's party.
I hate myself a little for that

Dude
I really enjoyed UP, so that is one helluva reccomendation to me. I know nothing about Brave. Does it have a character as hilarious as Dug? I fucking loved that dog. "My name is Dug. I have just met you, and I love you."
Sometimes i like to drink but when I do I r\drink and read sleeplessbrony's fics

Oh,this dog *hugs him tightly*
it does have funny/cute characters (and lots of bears),but I would prefer for you to watch them and check them out when you have the chance since I wouldn't want you to see then with any sort of bias and you might enjoy them (and the movie) in a different way than me
I think the movie was phenomenal in every aspect... except for plot.
Characters were very real while entertaining.
Environments were beautiful.
Soundtrack was a masterpiece.
Story... could have had more going for it. It seemed like the trailers set it up to be this big epic quest and it really turned out to be a small adventure.
I'm still so glad I saw it though. My friends and I couldn't breathe we were laughing so hard during the big brawl of the clans.
I just feel sorry for the animators for the main character's hair. That kinda frizz must have been Hell to do.
Welcome back :D
I agree with you. Brave was good fun!

I really enjoyed Brave, but it's not a "funny" movie.
I mean, Up is a funny movie with some drama in it. It's generally bright and cheerful and whimsical, which makes the emotional scenes a bit of a suckerpunch.
Brave is a dramatic movie with some humor in it. It's generally fairly dark (for a Pixar film) and tense, and more mystical than whimsical. It IS a fairly simple plot that doesn't twist and turn too much, but it's rather fairy tale-like in that respect. I suppose you'd say it's more Brothers Grimm than Warner Brothers.

Brave was awesome. Especially that MASSIVE FRIZZY GINGER HAIR SHADER. Pixar has the BEST shader coders.
Oh, um, right. Yeah. Yeah, and it spoke volumes on a non-technical level, too. Um, good movie and all that, fuck, I'm such a shader geek...
From a story-telling aspect, I felt Brave kinda flopped. Perhaps it was my expectations of Pixar set way to high (they set that bar themselves though). But it just never... grabbed me. Sure there were cute scenes and funny scenes and exciting scenes. But to me it felt as if it never took off. I was expecting something more. I was expecting more of an antagonist, more of an adventure (there seemed to me to be about 5 major scene settings in the whole movie), more action and excitement (was sort of hoping it would have some battle scenes - this IS medieval Scotland after-all).
For instance, was it wrong of me to expect her to use that bow a bit more? After all the early emphasis placed on her archery skills and the apparent sentimentality of her bow, she wound up firing her arrows a few times at the big bad bear, which had zero effect. And that was it. Seemed a bit useless for all the build-up it had, like a Chekhov's gun that isn't used.
I think perhaps the twist in the film soured my mood for it. I didn't much care for it and it left me yearning for the more grand expectations I had been left from the trailers. Following this twist, things became predictable and even a little cliche. It was called "Brave" but it was less about bravery and more about accepting someone different for who they are and learning to change yourself in order to... be a leader? Which I suppose requires a measure of courage, but not the same sort as I had in mind (again, my accursed expectations!).
The technical aspects of Brave however stand in sharp contrast. It was visually a delight and the music I also enjoyed (I'm a sucker for bagpipes). Pixar continues to improve in that department, and Brave will probably win some awards for it's stunning visuals.
Brave was a great movie.... perhaps a bit formulaic, but that's not necesarily a bad thing. They didn't have this incredibly new story idea, but it had wonderful characters to showcase, and formulaic stories work best when you want to push the character interaction to the forefront. It may not have been Pixar's best, but it still outstrips just about every other movie currently showing, so if you're going to go see a movie, make it Brave.
