Further Confusion · 8:15pm Jan 12th, 2015

This weekend, I'm heading to San Jose for Further Confusion! Anyone else planning on going?

I'm not expecting a lot of response here[1], but if there are others, it might be cool to get together and set aside a night for a room party or something. I'll be bringing a bunch of storytelling games like Once Upon A Time and The Extraordinary Adventures of Baron Munchhausen — as well as my own hilarious and slightly-off-color card game about writing sex scenes in a bad romance novel, which has an MLP expansion — and if the whimsy takes us, maybe we can sit down (alcohol optional) and cobble together some weird Atlanta Nights-style entry into the More Most Dangerous Game contest. :derpytongue2:

[1] Historically, there's been some level of brony/furry crossover due to the overlap in interests, but for some reason the fandoms keep each other at arm's length. There's a My Little Pony panel on Friday morning, and there will almost certainly be some pony merch in the dealer's den and artist's alleys, but if you're only interested in MLP (especially if your main interest is on the fanfic front) there's probably not enough pony there for a whole weekend's trip. (Of note, however: AugieDog mentioned in his blog that he'll be there to speak at a panel on selling original fiction.)

I would but getting licensed to sell in the states s a long and expensive process.

As for the dislike, It's a sort of uncanny valley effect. The closer to ideal you get, the more the differences stand out.

Hope it's a great con and you have lotsa fun. I humbly request pics of you and Augie being your stellar selves.

Have fun! I've heard it's a pretty good con.

Seconded. Possibly Thirded. :pinkiehappy:

I'm not a furry (at least by any definition that would encourage me to attend a con) and I'm not close enough to San Jose to actually go there on a whim, but if my suspicions are correct you will be marginally geographically closer to me than usual, so: yay!

That's because furries are weird.

I, on the other hand, am absolutely normal, with no deviant tendencies whatsoever.

On a completely unrelated note, I have a friend who once spent a decent chunk of time in an [imagine I came up with a polite euphemism for] asylum. And she tells me that there were basically disorder-cliques, like all the borderline people hung out together, and all the bipolar people hung out together, etc. And everybody was constantly talking about how they were fine, but those other people with [insert name of condition] were just really freaking crazy[1].

I can imagine no way in which this could serve as a parallel to various fandoms people may or may not be part of.

[1] Though nobody actually knew if the schizophrenics played along, because nobody hung out with them and it was widely accepted that they were the craziest of the batch. That sort of makes me sad.

Well, I've always thought of MLP as being closely related to the furry fandom. Ponies are, after all, anthropomorphized animals, though much less so than furries are (and a large section of the MLP fanbase isn't actually fond of them being anthropomorphized - myself among them, interestingly, despite the fact that I am a furry).

Thing is, people are furries and bronies for many different reasons, and there are motivations which don't especially overlap, thus meaning that there are furries who are uninterested in MLP, and bronies who are uninterested in the furry fandom.

MLP is hugely popular amongst furries from what I can tell, though, and I suspect that MLP is going to act as an entry drug into the furry fandom for many bronies the same way that other shows have historically.

horizon is going to a furry con on the wrong coast FUUUUUUUUU

Oh, you right-coasters with your right-coast prejudice D:

I've never made it out to Anthrocon, because taking a plane to a convention cranks both the financial and temporal commitment level way up, but it's on my bucket list.

Well, I haven't been there since '05, so don't feel too much pressure. :B I honestly don't know what I'd do at a furry con these days, aside from attend the MLP panels.

Ugh... I've been meaning to actually go to a furry con since I first found the fandom decades ago. But finances and geography always conspired against it. (Still find it amusing that I somehow ended up at an MLP con first.) Now that I can afford such things, I tend to forget to seek it out, and totally didn't think about it being in January. I almost could've turned it into a work expense, as we were debating Oakland as a meeting site for a team I work with next week. Silly me though, I argued into getting people to fly here to Oregon, so I could be lazy and sleep in my own bed for once! Ah, karma's a #@*%&! :pinkiecrazy:

Someday, I'll get my schedules lined up and make it work. I'm sure I'll catch you at Babs again this year too.

2719408
I'm already locked in for Babs (it's a lot easier when I don't have to factor in travel beyond a bit of a drive)! I really do want to attend Everfree again, but finances might start getting touch-and-go depending on the state of the fiber project at work ... :unsuresweetie:

Sorry, can't afford to. Have fun!

Howdy Horizon! I'll be there. Let me know when you get to town.

Hey... Remember me? Uh, since you are coming down here, maybe you can pass through Duarte in LA county, and we can chill out? Or something... if you want.

Hi - Further Confusion is in San Jose (I'm there now), so won't be in your area, sorry. Northern California. :applejackunsure:

2728363 umm. no, I moved to Los Angeles, remember? I live in Duarte, in Los Angeles. Remember, dead mom, had to move with only person who would take me and my brother, my Oma, in LA.

2728415

I just realized San Jose is north of me... Sorry. Never mind what I said in the last post.

Hey, I actually happened to show up and I'm in the convention center now. Can anyone tell me where to find you guys?

I suppose we could have, but then you wouldn't have earned a ponyfinding Cutie Mark like you did. :ajsmug:

Glad we got to meet!
