Rule 34 Updates resuming June 2016

I need to take a temporary leave of absence from the Rule 34 updates. I'll be back in a couple of months and will strive to have 3 months worth of data to discuss. In the meantime, please enjoy these pictures of shaved horses:

FIMfiction changes · 7:59pm Dec 24th, 2014

"I don't think it's any secret anymore that the site is going general fiction sometime in the near future. This means pony branding is going to have to go anyway, so whether I had any other reasoning, this was an inevitable change." -Knighty

Clarification was added later.

"Fimfiction.net will always be for ponies
The Fimfiction you know and love (or hate) will always be like this. It will always only show MLP stories. If you're a user who only cares about MLP, you have nothing to worry about because nothing is going to change for you." -Knighty

How does everyone feel about this? Is anyone interested in writing and or reading fanfiction on this site devoid of My Little Pony?

While the future of FIMfiction may be uncertain, I'm confident that bronies will continue to find ways to express their creativity and love for My Little Pony. Merry Christmas and a Happy Hearth's Warming Eve!

Fanfiction.net is for general fanfiction and probably a lot more lesser known ones. We really don't need another one. There's literally no point.

We're going to overthrow Fanfiction.net. It's a war I tells ya. Fimfiction will be to Fanfiction like Facebook was to Myspace.

Well, it's while from happening or so they say so I guess we wait. :|

That way, when the pony craze dies out eventually

This idea is fucking annoying and idiotic.

Fandoms don't die especially with franchises that reboot every couple of years.
All that will happens is people wait for the next generation, bitch about how it isn't like G4, watch it anyway, then it repeats.

I for one welcome our new outside-the-fandom overlords.

And Merry Christmas, BStories! How do you celebrate the holidays in your home? For some reason, I envision an incredibly kinky orgy and a version of The Nativity story that more resembles an Aristocrats joke...

:P

As long as I can still write pony, I have no fucks to give.

yes, and fanfiction.net also sucks arse.

fimfiction is a million time better from a UI/useability standpoint.

I can see why he's doing it, and frankly I would love a good fanfiction site for other IP's: we can't have a total monopoly on decent fanfic.

I do worry about how separated the different fandoms will be, though. Some fandoms are nicer than others (and bronies are one of the best) so I really wouldn't want to deal with really toxic non-bronies on pony story boards, and so on.

I am absolutely behind this decision for several reasons:

1) fanfiction.net is a stagnant piece of shit. AO3 is ugly and lacks a lot of the functionality of this site. Also, they have that weird delay between signing up for a new account and them actually giving the account to you. The general fanfiction community needs a site that actually gives a shit about its users and is good.

2) knighty has graduated from college. I want him to continue developing and supporting this site. Even if the ad revenue from this site can support him as it is now, there is no telling when the fandom will die or stagnate and drop below the amount of money that can support him. If he spreads out to cover all fandoms, it is much more likely that he will keep actively developing and supporting the site.

To want to prevent other fandoms from having a site as good as fimfiction is really fucking selfish.

Personally, I haven't read much non-MLP fanfiction in years, but I 100% support him making the platform available for everyone else.

I'm taking my usual attitude with this sort of thing; I'm not forming an opinion until it actually happens. It could go either way, so I'll wait and see which way it does.

Eh, I'm a little uncertain about this. I can understand the reasoning, but I really wish he'd hold off on such plans until we at least know there isn't going to be any more seasons of the show. I may sound like an exclusionary dickhead by saying this, but I prefer having a site like this separate for pony fanfics, and I DO NOT want to log in and find some fanfic about some show I don't know anything about being shown in the featurebox. Dickish? Yes, absolutely, but I'll like it better when I don't find "MLP" and "Inhumanoids" fanfics next to one another. I'd prefer to keep them separate.

Seems natural to me. Knighty doesn't want his effort to go to waste. Knighty's shitty web design skills aside this site is still way better than fanfiction.net and I'd rather be here than there.

~Have a good one.

I don't like it. I don't like it one bit. The reason I don't read fan fiction from other fandoms is twofold:

1: The sites themselves suck. They are hard to navigate, and there isn't any interaction between mods, authors, and readers.

2: I have yet to find another fandom, or even a story from another fandom that is anywhere near as good as this one is. The MLP crowd is an amazing assortment, with a few notable exceptions, and the fics coming from this site are better than some books I've read. The worldbuilding some authors do is phenomenal.

I just feel like if a site fails, the first place that should be examined is the user base, to see what kind of people frequented the site. Usually a site implodes due to its own people. Being exclusionary is not necessarily a bad thing if you don't like a certain group of people.

I like variety, however hanging out with bronies only is much better for my health.

Other fandoms can get annoying. I DON'T want to read about Harry Potter's wet dreams.

2675989

Involving Lyra and Bon Bon, ideally.

Sincerly, with all the crossovers that are out ther where MLP intercepts pretty much anyone else if you got a bit of imagination (Sonic and Spyro are prime examples), I'm actually a little interested with what others have to offer....but there has to be a little bit of exclusivity at the beginning, kinda like now. Natural evolution states that most will collapse by the wayside anyway, and I think that the way that our Brony phenonenom has made it to mainstream (even if it seems a bit insulting at times) ensures us that we are gonna be around for quite a while....

In short, watch it with caution.

It's curious to see people commenting about their aversion to other fandoms, considering how some people outside of this particular fandom view bronies. Bronies have their saints, but they have their Satans as well, same as every other fandom. And there will always be parts of a fandom that blend/overlap with others. Overlapping between furries and bronies are an example of this. Fallout: Equestria is another.

As for Knighty's grand schemes, I have no particular feeling about it.

As for those complaining about having to see non-pony stories on the site, Knighty explicitly explained that Fimfiction itself will remain the same, that it will continue to show pony stories only, and that it will be kept on a separate domain from a different domain that will host the other stuff. He explains it right here. So no worries. ;)

This can only mean terrible anime shipfics.

2676170

Pony fanfiction was by-and-large pretty awful, too, before Fimfiction became popular. A higher standard of writing can't emerge when there's no system to establish it; a lack of a proper rating system inevitably leads to a hugbox in which the worst stuff is considered acceptable. Communities which have the hugbox mindset ingrained into them actively avoid any sort of system that would burst their bubble. I've never seen any sort of rating system for a furry related site, ever.

2676403 I'm not complaining about non-pony stories, I want non-pony stories on this site. Fanfiction.net sucks.

2676607

I do worry about how separated the different fandoms will be, though. Some fandoms are nicer than others (and bronies are one of the best) so I really wouldn't want to deal with really toxic non-bronies on pony story boards, and so on.

Maybe it's not complaining, per se. But you did express a level of concern about pony and non-pony stories being mixed together, and I wanted to alleviate that concern. :) Pony stories will be kept entirely separate from non-pony stories, in separate domains. But at the same time, the non-pony stories will enjoy the same coding and overall site layout that Fimfiction does. I, for one, agree that Fanfiction.net could be better. If all goes well, both Fimfiction and its sister site (similar in relationship to Fanfiction.net and Fictionpress.com) will become the new juggernauts of fanfiction overall. I'm hopeful. (I guess this would be my real answer to the blog's question, instead of "no feelings". :/)

I may have worded things too strongly in my previous comment. My apologies. :/

(Oh, and there is still a possibility of users from the other site harassing us sometimes, but harassment happens pretty much everywhere. If all goes well, it will be kept to a minimum. I think the users on the other site will be too appreciative of its advantages over fanfiction.net to bother with making a fuss. That's my belief, anyway.)

2676853 Oh, thanks for clearing that up. Apology accepted!

2676563 Exactly what I mean. I just don't know if opening this site would be a good idea as even with a rating system a bad story can still be considered great so long as it appeals to the lowest common denominator.

2677192

I don't think we're as different as we like to think we are in terms of personal standards; it's just that the culture of certain other communities stifles any form of criticism by raising a massive fit if anyone dares to injure their fragile egos.

2677404 I can think of at least one group of our own who do the same. The Fallout: Equestria crowd is like that, it's a terrible story but the fans will claim it's amazing and defend it jealously if you dare to criticize it.

I'm sure there's others, I just haven't found them yet.

2679118 Fallout: Equestria being a terrible story is a definite new one to me; I've read through most of it and enjoyed most of it quite a bit. Honestly, I can see disliking it or parts of it, and it's not the best story ever, but calling it terrible under any circumstances seems like a huge exaggeration.

The world is very loose and open-world allowing for people to interpret whatever they choose how they choose, the storyline is captivating (in my opinion as well as many others'), and the messages behind the story holds true to the story's roots: Fallout and MLP. Add the fact it's a huge story with all of that spread on top of it, and I don't see any factual way it could be considered a "terrible story."

Feel free to prove me wrong.

In response to the actual blog post, it's basically turning FiMFiction into a general fanfiction site (because we don't have nearly enough of those, right?) and taking all of its unique charm away. I'm not expecting any of it to go well.

As someone who actively participates in multiple fandoms I see this as a good thing. My contribution to the long-lived (and barely still breathing) Lilo and Stitch fandom has a level of attention paid to the quality of grammar that would be more appreciated by the FiMFiction crowd than most fanfiction dot net users. This addition of a general fan fiction domain needs to take place ASAP!
