(Potential Rainbow Rocks spoilers!) Equestria Girls headcanon and Waking Nightmares · 8:46pm Nov 16th, 2014

After seeing Rainbow Rocks and enjoying I've decided that both Equestria Girls and Rainbow Rocks are canon to Waking Nightmares.
Here's how it fits in:
Equestria Girls and Rainbow Rocks happened, with one major difference: At the end of the Waking Nightmares version of Rainbow Rocks, Sunset Shimmer ascended to alicorn after the defeat of the Dazzlings, gaining wings after the Dazzlings were depowered. A quick trip back to Equestria confirmed not only just this (many happy, tearful hugs were shared between Celestia and Sunset Shimmer), but that Sunset Shimmer was the Element of Magic/Friendship for the EG world.
Sunset Shimmer, while happy to see Celestia again and have her forgiveness, elected to stay in the EG! world. Sunset's parents were dead in Equestria, but in the Equestria Girls world, Sunset's counterpart there was dead. She's been living with her counterpart's parents and doesn't want to abandon them. Celestia was sad to see her go, but so very proud of her for ascending to alicorn and overcoming her past greed, declaring her Princess of Redemption, which Twilight, Cadence, and Luna eagerly agreed with. Celestia gave her a notebook enchanted to never run out of pages, one that worked similarly to Spike's dragonfire. This allows Sunset to keep in touch with Equestria.
EG!Twilight Sparkle showed up looking for answers, EG!Pinkie Pie finding out about her arrival beforehand and making sure everyone knew it wasn't Princess Twilight, so EG!Twilight's arrival wasn't anywhere near as awkward as it could have been. EG!Twilight bonded with the others, although she can't sing a note so she generally just helps the Rainbooms with their tech stuff.
EG!Celestia and EG!Luna are investigating magic, having grown frustrated after the Dazzlings brainwashed them so easily and wanting to have magical defenses of their own. EG!Luna seems to be better at magic than EG!Celestia. EG!Celestia and EG!Twilight have bonded over mutual magical ineptitude, but maintain non-jealous friendships with the others. EG!Trixie, who's father is a stage magician, is teaching them stage magic to compensate, wanting to make up for her jealous actions during the Battle of the Bands.
The Dazzlings themselves are living off of prize-money they won from a Publisher's Clearing House-type contest that Sonata entered at random, so they are fine in terms of finances/food/housing. They were exiled ages ago, but only woke up a few years ago, growing steadily strong enough to make their play during Rainbow Rocks. Afterwards, the three feared reprisal, however to their surprise everyone was treating them normally, without (as much) of the bullying that Sunset Shimmer got after her attempt at a takeover.
Apparently, the student body of Canterlot High had worked it out amongst themselves that since Sunset Shimmer had saved them from the last Equestrian threat, it's probably likely that the Dazzlings will save them from the next one.
To this day, Adagio can't get the logic behind that.
The three of them decided to focus on regaining their musical talents, training their voices that had atrophied because of overdependance on the magical crystals that empowered them. As of the start of Waking Nightmares, they're back to mostly normal singing ability.
Sonata Dusk is the most popular of the three. Her friendly, ditzy personality and the fact that she was really only evil when Adagio was actively commanding her made it easy for people to get along with her.
Aria Blaze is the second most popular. She's mostly friends with other tough girls, like EG!Gilda and EG!Lightning Dust, but she also adopted a more flirty, teasing personality. The boys know they won't get anywhere with her, but they can't help but like her.
Adagio Dazzle is the least popular of the three, and its mainly the Rainbooms, Sonata, and Aria that talk to her on a regular basis. She's made little effort to make friends, still baffled at how stupidly forgiving everyone's being.
There is an Elements of Harmony-esque magic in the EG!verse, although it's been dormant for a long time.
Twilight Sparkle has already told the mercenaries about the EG!verse, but letters from Sunset confirm that the EG!verse is not their reality. (No Teufort, no Australium, no Mann Co, etc.) This never made it into the story because it was an event that was resolved in moments.

At the start of Waking Nightmares, the Rainbooms, the Dazzlings, and most of the students that have direct Equestria counterparts have all enrolled in Canterlot University. EG!Celestia and EG!Luna, at the recommendation of the schoolboard chairman, EG!Sombra, have taken up the jobs of Dean of Students (Celestia) and Student Counselor (Luna.)
...That being said, I am starting to make plans for an Equestria Girls spinoff of Waking Nightmares. The first chapter would show the different ending of Rainbow Rocks.
Would anyone be willing to read something like that, if I wrote it?
Why not add a humanized Tirek that has escaped the Canterlot Maximum Security Prison and was a mass murderer until he was caught?

Seriously though, I definitely classify Rainbow Rocks as a shockingly improved sequel even though I found the original movie enjoyably dorky. Both are canon to my currently active work as well as EG by itself being canon to a previous story that is currently on forced hiatus.
I'm sorely tempted to have an Ambassador Dirge Fog make an appearance petitioning for the trio to be allowed to return from their exile now that their source of unnatural power has been broken, but find myself struggling to figure out how he would find out about it.
2599057 In my headcanon all of the villains of Equestria have heroic (or at least good) counterparts in the EG!verse. Professor Discord, the absolute goofball of a science teacher. Detectives Tirek and Scorpan, partners on the local police force and brothers loyal to each other to the end. Professor Chrysalis, the theater teacher, and her bizarre wife, Fluffle Puff.
Sounds nice to hear Sunset and Celly finally get their hugs and kisses.

While I imagne people wouldn't care much either way (I know I don't, at least), out of curiousity, would this spinoff include any events from the main Waking Nightmares story and/or the EqG team(s) assisting against Gray and the Slenders?

, and I can imagine it would be just as funny, if not funnier, than Waking Nightmares, as well as still be interesting without all the high tention and horror of WN (I know I laughed really hard due to the "troll logic" concerning the Dazzlings. How the students could deduce that isn't just beyond Adagio.

2599519 G1 Tirek is a demon god in the WNverse, the Ultimate Evil, Krastos the Glue Maker. She's not sure what G4 Tirek's connection is to him and that scares her.

Damn you're good is this. You could probably integrate the entirety of Warhammer 40k into this universe if you wanted to. Though you shouldn't, because then they would be REALLY screwed.
Oh dear. What if the 3rd EqG movie involves EqG!Twilight Sparkle finding her way in Equestria? I hope you don't reference this future in any Waking Nightmares chapters (yet) so that if ever the 3rd movie throws you off, you won't have to AU already. You've been able to work in Season 3 and Season 4. No reason any more should stand in your way. Many fanfic writers I've seen so far have been forced to AU after a new season when writing post-canon stories. The fact that yours hasn't yet (at least on the MLP end) is a testament to your flexibility. Keep at it, mate!
Pity you disregard the comics, though, and all other supplemental materials. In my fic (which isn't post-canon), I plan on implementing all of them or at least reference them. With the premise of my fanfic goes, it's possible (as of this post, I'm mid-Season 2). Perhaps you can check it out. It's called "Shisno Chronicles: Friendship is Magic". (If you've watched Red vs. Blue, yes, I know what "shisno" means, I just thought it cool at first)
