So I'm surfin Fimfic one day kiddies and all of a sudden I find people leaving positive comments on crappy stories that somehow got accepted by the mods while my last masterpiece didn't.
Then I was like
What kinda world do we live in where some talentless jerk writes shitty shipfics and gets all MY good reviews?!
THIS SITE NEEDS AN ENEMA.
*fweee! fweee!*
Thankfully, that enema is coming soon. Many of my chapters are currently in their editing stages. Hopefully I'll have something up by next week, along with a brand-spankin' new blog feature... that is, a monster bestiary for Equestrylvania because nopony will stop pestering me about that shit harrumph harrumph!
Popularity on this site, or in any creative endeavor for that matter, is mostly luck. There is total crap that gets famous and then really good stuff that no one ever sees, reads, or hears about.
Just don't begrudge other authors their success. Do you begrudge the winner of a lotto ticket or a bingo game? No. Just try to have fun writing, and that's what really matters.
Though having followers is nice, I will say
*gleefully awaits enema*

A prime example would be my latest story. I worked damn hard on it, and even got PresentPerfect to edit/pre-read it. But alas, it has only ten likes in a few days' time.
2583342 Wow, and Present Perfect is pretty good, too.
I've written stories that have been 100k+ words long and have fewer likes, faves, etc. than some of my stupid one-shots that took thirty minutes to write. And then they get a bunch of dislikes for no reason by people who didn't even read a single word of it, because the view counter didn't even go up yet the dislike bar did.
But hey, I mean, I still enjoy writing them, so I guess that's what counts. After all, it's not like you can make a living writing about ponies or anything, lol.
2583364 Yeah, that's true, but it still sucks.
Like you wouldn't believe. And being the guy who tears apart those stories that are inexplicably popular, it's the only justice I manage to get.
I have still not forgiven this site for how popular The Scent: Lust of Mares became.
I've read the FAQs, and the standards that the mods set for story acceptance are still a total mystery to me. This isn't quite the same issue you've brought up, but I need to get it off my chest regardless: You'd think that stories containing obvious and incredibly frequent typos would be rejected, but I've seen many of them nonetheless.
One of the most baffling things I've ever seen on the site is a story that didn't contain any commas. And I don't mean that the story was constructed in such a way that commas were unnecessary. I mean that almost every other sentence in the story needed commas, but lacked them for absolutely no reason. It was as if the author's comma key was broken. How the heck did that get by the mods?!
Er... at any rate, I'm stoked for more Equestrylvania! Keep being awesome, Brony_Fife! ^_^
I'm with ya. I've seen plenty of stories that have absolutely no right being as popular as they are. Sometimes I'll look at the featured box and see a story where the description has the author saying they spent all of like 20 minutes on the story before pumping it out. It irks the shit out of me every time.

Sadly, that seems to be the key ingredient of a popular fic.
I wrote Are You Kidding There's Porn of Us and This Is the Most Absurd Sweetie Belle X Spike Shipfic You Will Ever Read in one sitting each, going over their editing only once before I submitted them. Of course, what made them winners was also their themes of porn and shipping. Any talent I threw in probably wasn't necessary, knowing Fimfic.
2583808 I remember being worried that The Rock Goes To Ponyville could have ended up being my most popular story back when I was preparing to publish it. Thankfully that didn't happen. I attribute it to there not being many wrestling fans in the community.
