Getting the most out of Fimfic with custom extra features! · 9:52pm Nov 6th, 2014

I've been using some of these awesome extra features for a while now... maybe it's time I shared them. I'm sure a lot of people don't even realize it's an option.

What extra features, you ask?

-Prompt Maker: it puts a little button on the fimfic toolbar that generates random prompts to write to. Some of them are pretty good! ^.^ Let's try it a few times:

The Doctor comes from Tartarus.
Nightmare Moon comes to Earth.
Bloomberg discovers The Element of Magic.
The Mane-iac meets Furries!
Smarty Pants is pregnant.

I don't know about you... but hitting that prompt button actually gives me some interesting story ideas... at least for silly one-shots!

-Show big avatars on mouseover: A simple one. On any user's page, I can just hover the mouse over the avatar to see the full-size version of it. Not a big deal, but it's nice to have sometimes, especially when someone has an interesting avatar.

-Comment ID's without autoscroll: And this is the big one, the reason I do this at all. It puts a comment ID next to every comment on every comment page. (Comment ID's are those >>1234567 numbers you see sometimes.) That lets me copy the comment ID, then paste it into a comment box on another tab. That way, I can reply to a lot of people at once without having to do a lot of scrolling. It a huge timesaver for someone who has pledged to reply to everyone, yet has some stories with a thousand plus comments. I don't know what I'd do without this feature!

And that's just the start! There are dozens more scripts, all listed as threads in the Fimfiction Userscripts group, and all of them do nifty things to improve fimfic. You can even request your own custom ones... and they're actually very good about responding to and fulfilling requests, so go ahead and ask for that feature you wish fimfic had -- I bet you'll actually get it!

To use those scripts, though, you'll need a browser extension like Greasemonkey (firefox) or Tampermonkey (chrome). But once you have that, these little extra features are super-easy to install and use.

I hope you find this helpful, and thanks for reading! ^.^

I'm going to use the shit out of the prompt feature; maybe it will rekindle my creativity and desire to write.

Um... I tried the download link, and nothing happened. What exactly am I supposed to do?

You need to install greasemonkey or tampermonkey first; links to those are in the blog post.
