Green Chapter 29 Is About To Go Live, And A Personal Matter · 5:46pm Nov 1st, 2014
Hey folks, so... my computer blew up.
Now, thankfully I do have a netbook (slow as hell, but it is technically a computer, when it decides to work), and when I can wrestle away from her, my wife's laptop. Trouble is, as it stands it may be a while before my tower is fixed.
Now, what does that mean to you? Well, not much, actually. I have been a busy beaver and actually have close to a two month buffer (I have a draft ready on the chapter after this and I am currently 5k words deep into the one I intend to put out in January.
It will however make it hard to keep up that buffer. If anyone cares to help out towards getting a new system, I have links for patreon and paypal. Hell, even if someone has a used system they'd care to donate I'd happily accept.
Speaking of the patreon, I have added some goals and rewards should anyone decide they'd like to help support this little hobby of mine.
In any case, thank you for reading, and I will keep plugging away as much as I can.
Waht broke on your pc? Extremely rare that a pc breaks anything more than 1 component unless it's the PSU.
2568083 Looks like a hard drive crash. Not irreparable, just not something I can do anything about for a bit.
2568085 Hard Drives are only about £30 on ebay :P and maybe £40 or still about £30 on amazon and they fit any pc unless your pc is pre 2007 because they are all Sata.
On amazon the WD generic blue model is only £39.99 at 1TB.
Also just a pointer, never ever ever EVER get a Western Digital Green, it screws your pc. Firstly it has head parking when idle which causes so much wear (early failures) and response time issues and secondly my god are they slow it's like a bad laptop hard drive, such a waste of time. Blue are the best for anybody who just wants a Hard Drive and black are fast but loud as hell.
I always urge people that have these issues never to send their pc in or at least supply the parts to the people (buy it yourself and give it to them kinda thing) because they always rip you off for such a simple job. To install a hard drive takes 10 seconds and then maybe 1 min extra to screw it to the case, yet they make u pay retardedly large amounts for a job that a small dog could do. Not to mention them saying hard drives cost like £60 when they are like £40 at most. It's not more complex then plugging in 2 usbs and obviously your pc already has a hard drive in it so it literally shows you what to do (just copy how the cablews were already plugged in and it's good to go).
2568114 Huh? I've been using WD Green drives for years and I've never had any issues :/ I have a couple installed on an audio workstation machine at the moment, I used the Green drives because they're so quiet, they hold up pretty well even when dealing with having to read 40 different audio tracks at once. Perhaps the WD Greens had problems years ago, but the newer Greens are excellent drives.
The WD Blues are cheaper, though, so there's that, I guess. And I'd definitely agree with you about buying the parts and doing the installation yourself, it's a simple job.
2568661 Greens are notorious for their failure rate, however after a google search some sources say they fixed the issue. I haven't been keeping up with computers as much recently. Back in 2012 I was a top commenter on Yahoo answers in the PC section for a few months but I got unfairly "reprimanded" from the site for no reason with no contest or evidence, and I just said fuck it and never went back. They deleted so many points from my account too and took the top commenter status away too -.-
Awww...
I wish I had known this would happen, because I had an old desktop I wasn't using that I could have sent you, but I got rid of it when we moved about a month ago...
I was curious are you aiming to just replace the drive or did you want to build an entirely new machine?
I recently had to jump through the hoops trying to salvage info off a hard drive so I know how much of a chore that can be.
2576970 It all depends on the state of the old drive. If it's fried, I might just bite the bullet a build a new one.
2577006 trying to think what to say without it coming across wrong. I guess that is a fair and logical course of action and I'll try to find some money to help things along, I shouldn't be stingy when I enjoy the stories so much but all my working machines are starting to show their age so there is a part of me that pitches a fit whenever I think about this.
2598032 Please, don't feel compelled on my part. I am still managing to write. The lack of a tower is an inconvenience. I merely put it out there in case a few people did wish to help, and a couple people did send what they could, which I appreciate. I will eventually scrape some cash together, but believe it or not even a small expenditure is a setback for me right now. I am kinda trying to devote every red cent not going towards bills to get rid of some payday loans still hovering over my head. But I don't want to whine about my problems, writing is how I destress, and seeing people enjoy what I do pumps me up to write more. The computer problems are just... annoying. They influence my routine, which in turn influences my writing. And don't worry about how you put things. Believe me, I get it, this should not be a problem, and if past me hadn't made some horrible choices, it wouldn't be. But... I am future Steel now, and past Steel's problems are mine.
