I finally figured out why I've had such a hard time writing the next chapter of Missing Dreams
Shining Armour.
The guy has no character whatsoever. You don't really notice till you think about it, but now that I have to write him, I realize that aside from "prince" he has no personality at all. None. Zero. Zip. On the surface he does, but if you're a writer and you put the guy in any kind of serious situation and suddenly you have no idea how he'd react besides "princely". It's annoying as all hell, let me tell you. I now have to make an entirely custom character for him, make sure it all aligns with what he's done in canon, then, and only then, can I write the chapter. I need to make one big-ass flow chart. Yeah, I use flowcharts for virtually everything. You really don't appreciate them enough when you're in elementary school, but they've suddenly become really useful to me.
Also,
Fog Machine; Acquired. Dude it is so much more awesome than I ever thought. It's just fog but... I can make it. I will be taking and posting a ton of pictures from Halloween this year. I have so many plans.
Basically, until I finish my character write up for Shining, I'll be working on Under Our Wing, which I'm sure many of you are happy about anyway.

Shining Armor the waifu stealer f**ks things up again!
Yes, a waifu stealer! I don't care if they were engaged to each other before the episode, it was my waifu, and he stole it!
Well, if we look at his character, the main thing about him would be self-sacrifice.
As presented in the Canterlot Wedding and when he saved the Mane 6 from Sombra when they were about to enter the Crystal Empire.
Also, he is clearly a daring character too in a pressured situation, seeing how he threw his wife off a Castle in order to protect the Empire....
He'd also have to be a well-spoken pony, the kind of pony that doesn't hold back what he thinks and welcomes a challenge. Otherwise he wouldn't be a Captain of the Royal Guard, wouldn't he?
I'm sure there would be a little more if I re-watched the episodes...

That's not a personality, those are character traits. It's not enough for a real character, so far all I see is the general "Prince" stereotype, and it's a stupid one. It's not enough real substance to put him in a variety of situations and reliably know his reactions.
Finally! Someone says what we're all thinking!
Thats the trouble I have with characters like Shining Armor, Cadance, and Flash Sentry. They are all so generic in personalty that it'd hard to connect with them. SA is generic cool big brother. Cadance is generic cool big sister (in-law). FS is generic nice guy/fantasy boyfriend material.
