Technically, we've always had a leaderboard—just not placement stats on stories. Go to browse and then "Top - All Time" to see stories by rating. I remember back when mine was in the top ten... now it's down past 300, partly because I'm so bad at actually updating, I'm sure
I think Mood Wings was one of the fics that really got me into reading FiM fics to begin with, so good job on that. (The other ones I can accuse of that are Those Blue Wings and Hammerspace.)
It's been forever since I read it, but I loved Mood Wings.

What's really weird is that if you check the story at the very top of the 'All-Time' list (currently Hoopy's Keepers of Discord) the general stats tab claims it's in second place. There's apparently some secret story on the Fimfic servers that's SO amazing, they're not even allowed to tell us about it.

I noticed that! When I first saw mood wing's score after the change (29th, actually), I checked to see where Hard Reset was, and was surprised that Keepers was above it. I'd love to know what the hell is first though ;P

It picked up a couple of extra downvotes over the last few days, so I'm not hugely surprised. It'll probably end up back on top again when I get another chapter of Changing Lives out and a fresh wave of hits from EQD and the 'recently updated' part of the feature box flow in.
I'm more surprised that 'Whom the Princesses Would Destroy' fell all the way from 2nd to 12th since I last looked.

Actually, the top 100 stories by rating have a huge amount of churn to them. I track them, and there's a great deal of rotation amongst them, with only a few - the ones which have really, really enormous numbers of votes - being relatively stable.
Basically, it is because the stories on top are all so close in their predicted upvote:downvote ratios, a single downvote can easily drop a story 10-50 places - The Stars Ascendant has been, at various times, everywhere from first to barely in the top 100. It tends to rise up the ratings for a while, and then get downvoted when it is in the top 10-20 stories.
The front page of stories by rating is particularly susceptible to downvotes for whatever reason; sometimes someone will go through and downvote all of them.
2524521 Yeah, I just noticed that a few minutes ago myself. A few of those fics are 600 to 1000 upvote fics with barely 10 downvotes, and a single one of those will change its ranking dramatically. I'd at first thought it was mainly the ones with large amounts of votes, but clearly not!

It is probably a test story or some such. I wonder if an unpublished story gets included in the ratings, being unable to get any downvotes by controlling who can access it might game the system.

If you're interested, I wrote a blog post a while ago about how story ratings are calculated.
The formula somewhat advantages stories with larger numbers of votes on them, which is why stories with lower ratios have higher ratings - because there is less uncertainty in their "true" ratio, and the equation uses the lower bound.
Mood Wings has moved around a fair bit in the time I've watched the top rated stories - even a story with as many votes as it has is pretty significantly effected by a single downvote, just because the numbers are so close on top and the ratios of all the stories involved are so good.

I still read it now and then. Not to long and plenty of cute between Twilight's obliviousiness (is that a word?), the final chapter of the book, and the ending of the story. And of course the completely in character response of Rainbow's when Twi explains what happened.
