    Where I've been...

It’s getting harder to write with swype (pain-wise) for some reason. I’m thinking of going back to voice, although there’s still the hesitancy I feel due to the pain reaction. Whenever I think of writing, there’s the anticipation of pain, and it makes me procrastinate like no one’s business. Writing with voice isn’t much help because of how fast my voice hurts from it (I really have to enunciate

Progress Report - and bonus art!!

The moving process has been delayed due to work dragging their feet on the transfer. Oh, also, the old car I was borrowing from a friend finally gave up and died. Wife and I finally got a vehicle of our own and Sweet Celestia's Beard insurance is expensive in Alberta. Hopefully the move gets done soon.

Bad news · 12:20am Oct 3rd, 2014

Guys, I got back from the doc. He thinks it's a repetitive stress injury. This could go either way. There's a good chance I'll not be able to type professionally ever again. I'll know more in a few weeks. Until then, I'm going to be almost silent, holding on to the tiny embers of hope I have left.

I'm sorry.

RSI is a big umbrella with a lot of variables and a lot of treatment options. Chin up, Cv--it might mean you need a kinesis and custom wrist braces, but rest and anti-inflammatories can do a lot.

I almost wish I could chop of my hands and give them to you to implant. :pinkiesad2: Nothing's worse than being told you might not ever be able to do your dream.

I've been afraid of that from the beginning. Very sorry to hear that. Hopefully it's the sort that can be alleviated with an ergonomic keyboard and so on. If not....well, I've heard that speech recognition is making good progress. It's even possible to code by voice, apparently, though it's not exactly natural.

This makes me worry about my Guyen's symptoms even more. :twilightoops: God, I'm so sorry. I can't imagine losing my wrists like that.

I'm sorry to hear that, Cv. I hope the follow up offers a better outlook. Stay strong.

Wow, well get better soon, and hope it's not something that crippling. Not being able to type, I just can't imagine.

My suggestion is to be totally silent for the time being. Simply don't use the computer until you have some definitive answer.

Eitherway, good luck. I hope you find some solutions :fluttershysad:

Have you thought about looking into voice recognition software? With a good mic and a program like Dragon NaturallySpeaking, you can just talk out your story, format and correct it, teach it new words, etc. It isn't cheap (about $100), but I've used older versions years ago with good results.

Well, just about everything I was about to say has been said already. Get well, rest, chin up, support support support. Rest is definitely the best option right now. I've come close to messing up my wrists and arms before, but usually a couple days rest and maybe some ice helped a lot.

What's been said goes without saying, and best wishes. I've seen remarkable benefic from surgery for some hand impairing RSI so again best wishes to you.

Also even in the worst case remember there is still a light at the end of the tunnel in some of the speech to text software around these days.

2502494 yeah I know a few doctors that use a version of dragon with a medical vocabulary for all of their dictations and notes and swear by it.

Good luck.

Welp. Time to invest in bionic limbs so I can help out my favourite writer.

Best of luck, and I don't mean any offence by this, but perhaps you should look into dictation software to use for writing. It would certainly give you plenty of time to rest your hands and maybe make things move a bit quicker for you.

Int he other comments, there were mentions of chopping up people's hands for grafting.

There's a few people I wouldn't mind cutting some extremities off of, especially if it helps a friend/idolized internet writer.
Don't worry, they won't miss the limbs for long.

I'll hope for good news, but I wish you the best no matter what.

People are surviving cancer nowadays. I'm hopeful that the good Canadians can find a method to fix your wrists. Good luck, sir.

There is always dictation software. Is the problem in both wrists? If not I'd imagine edits can be done easily one-handed.
If you can't find dictation software for free, I might consider getting it for you for Christmas. A writer that is unable to write? That's like a fisher without a rod, or a sports player tearing an ACL... just not cool.

Yup, Dragon Basics is only $50 USD... I could throw that down if you cant find something.

Ill just say this my friend. I have learned from many anecdotes that if you keep your hope and faith you can find a way to do anything you want/Wish. Just have to hold on to your hope and be creative in finding an alternative way to reach your goal.:pinkiesad2::ajsmug:

This is really horrible :(
I hope you the best of hopes that you recover from this.

2502494 I herd Twilight uses Dragon to dictate her letters to Princess Celestia, and swears by it too!

(And occasionally at it when it gets into the ice cream) :moustache:

Seriously though. I hear Dragon really is awesome.

Have you tried getting an ergonomic keyboard? Or one of those wrist things for under it? It may help, along with a wrist brace or something. Hope you are able to get better man.

Yeah, the utility of that diagnosis is somewhere between nada and bupkis; as 2502387 said, RSI is an umbrella term which covers just about any kind of cumulative trauma accrued through repetitive motions.

Assuming the doctor is correct, the good news is that unless you’ve managed to cause extensive permanent damage you should make either a full or near‐full recovery any time within half a year to a full year. Symptoms should be treatable via non‐steroidal anti-inflammatories combined with over‐the‐counter painkillers; the actual damage itself should be treatable through plain old rest and, in the case of moderate‐to‐severe damage, a splint. If the damage is not severe enough to necessitate surgery just take it easy (very easy!) on your hands and wrists and they will get better. Use of more ergonomic posture and tools of the trade once you’re better will help to prevent a relapse.
N.B.: Just make sure you don’t stop using your hands and wrists altogether — that will cause other problems which only exacerbate the underlying injury.

Assuming the doctor is talking out of his arse, well, there’s a variety of conditions that could be responsible. The neurologist ruled out a bunch, and if it’s not anything that falls under the RSI umbrella then at least you’ve eliminated over half of all possible causes, right? :unsuresweetie:

And adding one more voice to the chorus of 'don't give up, and if all else fails, try voice recognition software.' I know of at least one truly professional author who uses Dragon, and has written several books with it since a serious hand injury.

I'll also add to the chorus. RSI isn't an end-of-the-world diagnosis, I promise. You still have a lot of chance to bounce back from that (well, maybe bounce is too strong a word, but given just how broad the diagnosis is, there's still a lot of room for recovery.)

Chances are good you'll need to make at least some changes to how you do your typing - aka doing everything you can to reduce and remove stress while you're at the keyboard. But overall, that's not that bad these days.

Just adding to the chorus of well-wishers. Make sure to bring up dictation software with your doctor and see what s/he says. I'm pretty sure it'd help; the more total the rest you're able to give the affected portions, the better they'll recover. After giving them a break for a good while, then you could look at ergonomic keyboards and wrist rests, plus static trackball if you're a heavy mouse user.

More things to look at are your desk and monitor height, and how much you move around while typing. If you periodically swivel your chair back and forth a bit, and end up typing at a slightly different angle, that's all to the good - gets a bit of gentle circulation going too. And, of course, regular screen breaks'll be more important than ever, maybe with a stress ball, gentle hand/grip exercises, or stroking a pet.

I'm sure you'll be told all this by your doc, of course! I just want you to know there are concrete ways you can get in control of this. It's terrifying facing something you think you can't do anything about.

Have you considered getting the Dragon program so you can speak what you want typed?

Just a thought.

Best wishes!

Get dragon I use it.
And I shall send all the Healing Thoughts I can you way.

That's terrible.:fluttershysad: I'll be praying.

The first part to wining any battle is to decide you are going to be the victor.
DON'T GIVE UP!:rainbowdetermined2:

If worse comes to worse, you could always get someone you trust and then dictate the rest of the story over Skype or something and leave it up to them and the editors to do the actual leg work, as it were? :twilightblush: There's always dictation software out there too, so even if you can never type for very long ever again, you can still do what you love. Hang in there, we're all pulling for you.

I wish you the best of luck and health in your future, good sir! /)

FFS People, Cv has already gone on record, multiple times, that Dictation software is a no go for him, due to living arrangements.

Cv - that is though. I'm hoping that situation will not turn out quite so dire, not for the story but for your own sake, but even if it does turn out worst case, I'm unwilling to loose hope, and sincerely hope neither will you. Who knows, maybe by this time next year someone will devise a treatment/technique to repair the damage.
But, whatever happens, you have my best wishes and high regard.

FIGHT THE PAIN!!! RAGE AGAINST THE WRIST!!!

That's what I did!

I had carpal tunnel and it pissed me off so I beat my arm until it was totally numb and bruised!

My body finally learned who's boss! :pinkiecrazy:

Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. My thoughts will be with you.

You don't need to apologise, it's not your fault.

I hope things won't go bad and that they work out for you, man

I once new this writer and he had a medical condition that prevented him from typing. He was still able to wright. He used Dragon Naturally Speaking and a voice recorder and was in the middle of a book when I met him. I can't say that something like that would work for programming, but you don't have to give up your professional writing just because of this issue.

Either way, I hope that you get better and will pray for you.
