    Twilight the 没用

Yesterday, a fellow named SoothingBell asked if they could translate Twilight the Useless to Chinese, and no way was I gonna say no. :D

And they turned it around in 24 hours, amazing!

    Idle musing

so-called because that's what led me to the realization

What is so compelling about the idea of "warrior woman runs afoul of a wizard and is flung centuries into the future" that I made it happen twice?

...And with slightly more musing, I also realize, in a roundabout way, it was with the same wizard. >_> Huh.

Present Perfect vs. IDW Round 7! · 10:24pm Sep 25th, 2014

I had some time and I've built up a backlog of comics, so here goes! Remember to play nice, chiiiiiildren. :B

Issues 21-22

Applejack, Rarity, Fluttershy and Apple Bloom meet Babs Seed in Manehattan and go to see a show at Carneighie Hall (look it’s canon now). It turns out to be put on by none other than the Great and Powerful Trixie, making this something of a sequel to the Rainbow Dash/Trixie Friends Forever issue. It’s nice to know Trixie’s doing well by herself, unlike in, y’know, every fanfic about her ever. Anyway, this quickly turns into a convoluted jewel heist caper, with the various main characters getting caught on the wrong side of the law. They do their best to track down notorious thief Rough Diamond. It’s easy to figure out who she really is, but I honestly didn’t feel let down by being right; it was more a relief than anything. Also, this features some impressive Trixie/Babs bonding, which is not something I’ve ever thought about, but which makes tons of sense in context. My only real complaint is that Agnes Garbowska is no Andy Price. There aren’t any silly things to keep track of in the background, making the whole two-comic arc seem very straightforward. Plus, her ponies are often seen head-on, which makes them look very simplistic (granted, in the background, they look like sad cats, which is hilarious). Still, this is a nice read, and a solid arc overall.

3.5/5

Issue 23

Cover A of this issue is fantastic. Seriously, Owlowisius thinks in scrolls? Gummy thinks in crayon? Brilliant. Actually, the whole thing’s brilliant. All the ponies in Ponyville have vanished, and it’s up to Angel Bunny and the other pets to rescue them. This gets a tremendous amount of work done with image-only word balloons. (Gummy’s “dialogue” is amazing.) The pets’ characters shine, and, not to give too much away, but kelpies are canon. I love this to death, it’s probably the best one-shot ever.

5/5

Friends Forever
#8: RariJack

Comic writers ship good. Okay, so aside from featuring best horse wives going on a cross-country trip, getting lost, and generally irritating the hell out of each other, this also has a goat eating the script for season five. Andy Price is the artist the fandom deserves. (Other things to note: Applejack’s business plan; Twilight has a monument now; Bumblesweet cameo; Big Jim Miller cameo; cattle rustlers; they’re totally married, you cannot deny it just look at page 20; the Marx Brothers!; Whinnyland!) But yes, this is a laugh a minute, showcasing the best aspects of Rarity and Applejack’s (sadly still platonic) relationship. If you liked watching them butt heads in Trade Ya, try and track down this comic, it’s just perfect. (What I’m trying to get at is if you don’t give two shits about shipping, this still has comedic worth. Meanwhile, I will be laying on my back in the corner, waving my hooves aimlessly and making fish noises.) And there’s a mini-comic from Katie Cook about Winona that’s just adorable.

6/5

#9: Granny Smith and the Flim-Flam Brothers

This is a weird lineup in that the Flim-Flams have only ever been seen in Granny’s presence in the show. (I suppose a similar case could be made for Rarity and Applejack but shut up.) Anyway, this deals with the Apples going to “AppleCon” and Granny running into the Brothers… separately. It turns out they’re not on speaking terms thanks to a mare. Named Marian. We come full circle and nothing hurts. :V On top of humanizing the Brothers, this also features Granny being hilarious anti-orange (and berry), not to mention showing off her kind side. (And yes, young Granny makes an appearance. Always a good time.) And while he may not be Andy Price, Tony Fleecs is a close second (and ships LyraBon). There’s a lot to see in the background, albeit some of the pony cameos are a little head-scratching. Beyond that, I have no complaints about this one.

5/5

Annual 2014

The “annual”, again, is a double-wide special comic released yearly. Last year’s was Equestria Girls, this one is The Power Ponies. How cool to finally get Equestria’s own comic book heroes in actual comic form, right? I will say that I had some trepidation coming into this from having seen the cover. The Power Ponies are basically just recolors of the mane six. You can see some slight variation in manestyles — Fili-Second, Saddle Rager, Masked Matter-horn — but when Radiance’s mane is basically just Rarity’s, well… I mean, even Hum Drum looks basically like a pony version of Spike (at least he’s a pony).

That all changed when Zapp spoke. She’s 100% pony Thor and it’s beautiful. And Matter-horn’s goggles are adorable. Also, we get a fantastic rogue’s gallery of opponents: Phony Pharaoh, Long-Face, High Heel, Smudge, Shadowmane… Which is six when you include the Mane-iac...

Oh my god rogue’s gallery teamup. :D I was in tears, wholly breathless at the beauty before my eyes.

And it wasn’t even the best part. The Power Ponies are all dicks. That’s the main conflict: they’re a well-oiled machine in public, and a horrible mess in private. So they have to learn about friendship. Yes, there’s a cyclical reference loop going on here. Yes, it’s a plot we’ve seen before. But getting to watch the Power Ponies in action, seeing them not be entirely like the mane six (except Radiance, she’s seriously just Rarity), this is everything I wanted it to be. Plus now we have cool world-building Maretropolis stuff to write about! LongSmudge OTP. Also holy shit the fucking crossover mini-comic at the end there is no way to prepare yourself for this amazingness. All I’ll say is the Mane-iac is perfect and this needs a fucking sequel all by itself.

I could not agree more with all of these reviews. Sorry, Rarity's micro, I'm not even sure which comic is my favorite issue anymore.

Possibly the annual, though that might be from having read it just Wednesday. OMG the ending to the comic, and then the ending to the mini-comic.

I just bought the annual this morning from my local comic books store for myself my tutoring students. I already have the rarijack friends forever. Sounds like I need to pick up the grannyflam (is that a ship?) and pets issues too.

I need more money so I can buy more of these. I've only got the first two collections so far.

I deliberately set up a Comixology account just so I could read the Trixie comics. I didn't want them spoiled and couldn't wait for the compilation books. I wasn't disappointed!

I've slowed down on getting some of the other issues though. So much is being put out I'm starting to get lost!

(is that a ship?)

THANKFULLY NO

2483707
That's why I keep a list of what I still need. :B Now I just need more money to buy it with! (And local places that reliably carry them and aren't Hot Topic!)

2483765 My Little Donkey, My Little Donkey, AAAAAAHHHHHHHH!

I may never get over that.

It's so silly, but it's perfect somehow.

I think I'll still keep the "Life and Times of the Power Ponies" fic idea around though.

LongSmudge OTP

Damn straight. Long-Face may want to bring sorrow to everyone, but he's a goddamn bro. So much of that comic was good and makes me want to get back to trying to write fics for them... but I'm so horrible at it.

2483765 I think it needs to be a ship. GrannyFlimSmithFlam. :pinkiecrazy:

no shut up D: this is a bad idea

"Believe it or not, I used to be a looker back in the day."

"Why, Granny Smith, used to?"

"I dare say you still are!"

"Oh, boys!"

see this is what happens

Note to self: Find the annual. Dang, that sounds awesome.

2483907 Dammit, I'm totally writing this for one shotober And dedicating it to you.

Two Colts one Smith

Friends Forever #9 was an amazing one, with lots of pretty art. I couldn't resist Mare Marian the Librarian. She's just so stylish...

Here's hoping I don't eat my words later with the Annual... haven't read it yet.

I agree with what you said...except for issue 23. I didn't mind it right up until the end where Twilight justifies a blatantly evil action. It really spoiled the comic for me.

I hate you D:

Justification of evil, and forgiveness of it, are hallmarks of the series. If it had just been "kelpie enslaves ponies because kelpie = evil", it wouldn't have been nearly as interesting. Instead, we get a reason to sympathize with a character and their desperate act, and a chance to reconcile the status quo with kindness.

2485231 BTW, on a different note, Kelpies were canon way back in the 2nd or 3rd issues. One of those ones where they go find the changelings has a map of the area south of equestria, and there's a swamp where a kelpie lives on it. :rainbowkiss:

Ahh. One of those things that's easy to miss.

Funny how preferences vary. I found this batch reasonably weak (apart from the Annual, which I've yet to read), and from it I thought the Trixie arc the strongest and the RariJack the weakest (even if it was the wackiest). And it was not even the shipping (nor the lack of).

BTW, the RariJack issue really reminded me of Sam & Max. And it wasn't just the ball of yarn. I'm just not sure who is Sam and who is Max

2483765

THANKFULLY NO

On the other hoof, both Granny Smith and the Flim Flam Brothers were definitely shipped :trollestia:

2515365

What, reminding you of Granny and the Flim Flam Brothers being independently shipped, or trying to put in your mind the mental image of Applejack and Rarity cruising Equestria on a black and white DeSoto? :trollestia:
