So yeah... I really love Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II. Even if I just tend to sit down and play one mission at a time, I'm really having a blast. Even when I sometimes have to micromanage my squads, I can't deny that this is super enjoyable.
Take the mission I played this afternoon. Vengeance for Davian CoolThule. Boss fight against a Tyranid Warrior. The 'arena' for fighting it was accessed by two bottleneck points, concurrent to the side of the map you came up through. In any case, I had intel provided ingame that the enemy was susceptible to bolter fire, so I decided to do a little busywork. I set up three tarantula turrets, all facing the opening of the bottleneck, as well as having Avitus and Tarkus targeting the opening. Then, with a cloaked Cyrus, I laid out some anti-personnel mines in the bottleneck. When he went close enough to trigger the boss appearance, I proceeded to have Cyrus use up all five high-power shots, taking out anywhere from a third to half of the boss's health. Once that was through, I pulled him back and set him up facing the bottleneck before switching to Seven the Force Commander to engage. It was easy getting the boss to follow me through the minefield and into the killzone, but he was smart enough to back off... So I sent Seven back in with Tarkus and pretty much just played chicken with the boss for the rest of the battle. I've even gotten proficient at not having a single squad leader KOed in boss battle missions now. Almost lost Tarkus, but I was too quick.
It's things that makes Strategic RPGs awesome.
Anybody else played these games and have enjoyable experiences with them?
I prefer the Dawn of War (1) Franchise over DoW2. DoW2 was ok, but fairly limited in replayability unless you get all the DLC & play multiplayer.
2475130 I own Dawn of War I, but none of the expansions, and I honestly find it hard to keep interested in the campaign [the reason I play videogames]. I'll install it, get through the first two or three missions to refresh my memory/get used to it, and then forget about it.
If it's space-fantasy or point-n-click, I can guarantee I wouldn't let it touch my fecal matter without a forty-foot pole.
I hadn't played dawn of war 2 in a good while, but i still have them on my steam. I always loved the warhammer 40k lore and games. If you want to add me on steam it is http://steamcommunity.com/id/CeriseEdge/
2475402 They recently removed Games for Windows Live from the equation, so if you like getting achievements, there's that. I am not sure if I did add you that we would ever be able to play together. I've complained enough about it in the past that my connection is not conducive to gaming. I managed to play some Terraria with somebody without much lag, but it's been even worse since the storm back in August. Can't really change ISPs, either, because dail-up is the only other option... So there's that.
2475590 terraria still around and being updated?
2475634 I think it received an update this year, crossing over with the developer's other project, Edge of Space or whatever it's called.
2475648 that is interesting to hear, might have to check it out. Playing warframe or planetside 2 after I eat xD. Maybe Diablo 3 not sure.
2475662 I'd have gotten into Diablo 3, but for the presence of the always online thing.
2475704 Diablo 3 is fun with friends and has a decent end game. I still play it with others and it does get updates still.
I think I need to buy Retribution so I can play the Tyranid campaign. I love the Space Bugs.
I tended to go heavy shooty for everyone except the Force Commander, who I always turned into a melee powerhouse. Give him the best non-terminator armor I can, find something that stops knockdown, and then let him rip. The idea was to have one "tank" to hold the target still while the rest of the crew unloaded. So my strategy was generally Avitus inTerminator armor ASAP with Assault Cannons, Tarkus because of sheer shooty versatility, and then generally Thule for a combination of versatility (ranged in most missions, melee when appropriate) - sometimes you really needed a vehicle.
Cyrus? Meh. Thaddeus? Meh.
For the final guy I think I abused the hell out of turrets and orbital strikes. It was still a fight though - Thule just kept getting squished because he has such a large hit box.
2476046 Apparently Cyrus can be used to solo entire missions with patience and the right builds. And yeah, my Force Commander is very close to using the Power Sword I got in the last mission. I have it on good authority, however, that I should equip Avitus with a missile launcher for my next mission.
Please tell me I can make my Force Commander ditch his Bolt Pistol and wield a chainsword in one hand and a power sword in the other.
And yeah, Retribution gets a bit more RTS-y. Played some of the Ork campaign. So hammy. From what I've read, there is only one 'hero' unit for the Tyranid campaign, and that's your hive tyrant. Instead you get lots of honor guard units.

No... You never get to dual-wield. I think I ended up using a Thunder Hammer most of the time, which takes up both hands. Charge and a ground slam attack with it. I think. Charge was definitely a staple because I could get in and out quickly.
2476184 Incidentally, which of the Ruinous powers do you think each of the Elements would worship? I mean, if Twilight worshiped a Ruinous Powers, it'd probably be Tzeentch... but who would the others worship? Is Rarity a Slaanesh worshiper? Is Pinkie one with Nurgle? Does Rainbow Dash make offerings of blood for the Blood God?
2476262
Let's see...
Fluttershy would probably worship Khorne because it would allow her to better protect her precious animals.
Rarity would probably go for Tzeentch because he's got a certain panache that just makes a mare feel alive!
Rainbow Dash would be all over Slaanesh because F it, she does what she wants and wants to share it with all her friends!
Applejack would worship all four of them because she ain't gonna' take no crap from nopony.
Pinkie would worship Nurgle because nobody likes him and he probably just needs a friend.
2475148 Winter Assult is the only exansion to the original. i'd recomend buying DoW:Dark Crussade & Dow:Soulstorm (9both stand alone games), as they give you faction choices and their campains are diffrent setup from the original.
