Anime Review: Eden of the East (Minor Spoilers) · 10:44pm Sep 20th, 2014

Title: Eden of the East
Number of episodes: 11
Expires on Netflix: October 1

Content warnings:
Strong language, adult themes

On a trip to America with her college friends, a girl named Saki visits the White House, where she encounters a Japanese man her age who, for some reason, is walking around naked and carrying only a gun and a cell phone--and has selective amnesia, with no memory of his name or personal life.

Saki becomes entangled with the man, Takizawa, who returns with her to Japan, which has recently endured a number of mysterious, unexplained missile strikes in urban areas. Unknown to Saki (and to Takizawa himself), Takizawa is one of twelve people selected by an enigmatic figure to become a "savior of Japan"--or die. As Takizawa attempts to piece together the puzzle of who he is, he learns that he has over eight billion yen in an account linked to his phone, which has a direct line to a mysterious "concierge" named Juiz--who can make any request he asks for happen instantaneously.

This series seamlessly blends cute character designs and cheerful, optimistic moments with a dark, mysterious storyline and disturbing overtones. At times, its imagery also seems to be inspired by the Persona series of RPGs. It also features some rather quirky humor.
