Season Eight Episode Reviews: Molt Down

This week is a Spike episode? What a re-”molt”-ing development this is!

Let's look at “Molt Down,” the episode that will surely be perfectly normal and have no long-lasting repercussions on a character's appearance.

Season Eight Episode Reviews: Break Up Break Down

I dread going into this week's episode. For today, we discuss matters of the heart. Romance, love, heartbreak, and all that rot. Which means we run right into the most loathsome of all fandom constructs, the kind of thing that destroys friendships and leaves the most brilliant of minds curled up helplessly in a corner, foaming from the mouth:

    SHIPPING.

Today's episode is about Applejack and Rainbow Dash competing.

    The good times are over.

Season Eight Episode Reviews: Horse Play

So hey, it's a new episode. Surely nothing to be excited about. Just another standard episode of a cartoon pony show.

    Only it's a CELESTIA EPISODE!

Prepare for extra spicy biased scoring as we look at Best Princess' newest episode, “Horse Play!”

Maud Pie is the most terrifying thing to ever exist · 5:13am Sep 19th, 2014

Just one look upon her face will terrify even the most coldhearted of villains.

(Seriously, I'm suspecting there will be a small uptick of "Maud as Cupcakes!Pinkie" just based on this preview.)

But...yeah, other than that, I have gotten back into working on stories. Did a lot of work on EotH. Not going to work more on Waning Moon until I have my plot tracked out again. Sorry for the delays. I am a horrible person. Will see you soon with actual stories so that you will resent me less.

...

But seriously, Maud is terrifying.

I didn't resent you to begin with :trollestia:

You're not a horrible person.

Also Sunset Shimmer is really cementing her place as Best Human for me.

Which Maud are we talking about?

But she's not a human. She's still technically a pony regardless of what shape her body is currently in.

hold on! Maud is in rainbow rocks?!

:pinkiegasp::pinkiehappy::raritystarry::twilightsmile:

Oh and, having just finished watching the new trailer, I am officially disappointed. Why? Two words -- Princess Twilight.

I'd really been hoping that the Twilight in this film was going to be the human counterpart previously hinted at by Pinkie, but no. We must instead again contrive a reason to drag the magical princess of friendship into the human world for another climatic duel of destiny pointlessly framed against the backdrop of petty high-school drama. Not to mention a way for it to even be possible when the portal is only supposed to open once ever two-and-a-half years.

It's not that I hate the premise of Equestria Girls as a High School AU. Quite the contrary, and I'd love to see the lives of these otherworldly counterparts explored. However, I think that it's something that needs the chance to stand on its own merits rather than always relying on the show as a crutch.

Is Sunset living with Pinkie Pie? :pinkiegasp:

2466370 Randomly curious, any plans for her in the Lunaverse? I don't remember if I've seen her show up in any stories.

Not to mention a way for it to even be possible when the portal is only supposed to open once ever two-and-a-half years.

Already covered in one of the previous trailers, Twilight apparently applies Science to the problem.

If there is anyone in the Pie family who would freak out a visitor if seen late at night, it's Maud. It isn't her fault she looks like and acts like one of the Undead but...

Okay, now that's how to get a person -or at least me- hooked. Maud. The Dazzlers didn't hook me. Flash certainly didn't hook me. Sadly, not even the believable conflict of Sunset overcoming her past deeds hooked me.

Maud Pie and that gif, however, hooked me.

When you can scare Sunset Shimmer, someone who doesn't even think too highly of the new villains, then you are scary

Current plan is to put her with Lightning Dust and turn the two of them into Team Rocket style villains, in the sense that they're not really all that villainous and more like Those Two Jerks. They won't be ineffectual, so much as their goals won't ever be something so dire as to require the L6 to drop everything to try and stop them, and if they win the result will be more along the lines of "this bank no longer has any cash" rather than "a new age of fear and villainy has begun"

2466536
Meh... like I said, it's not that they aren't providing explanations for the why/how of Princess Twilight being involved, it's that those reasons are no less pointlessly contrived.

Again, I'm fine with the idea of EQG as spin-off, but it needs to actually "spin-off" on its own instead of always trying to tie back into the show. Introducing the human Twilight would have been a good way to help EQG start moving towards acquiring its own independence and identity.

2467156 What does "pointlessly contrived" even mean other than "I don't like it"? It's a plot choice, just like every other bit of the writing, and it's not like Twilight doesn't have a long history in-show of researching stuff both magically and scientifically (or at least, technologically):

i.imgur.com/44ULdLg.png

Hasbro apparently wants pony Twilight involved and not replaced with the theoretical human Twilight, and the fallout from that means we get her canonically researching cross-dimensional travel. I fail to see that how that's a bad thing.

2467272
Like I said, it's a narrative crutch. It's choice yes, but one that betrays a lack of faith and/or commitment to EQG as its own franchise, a seeming fear that if the magical pony princess of friendship isn't there the movie would fail.

If that's the case though then they should just scrap the whole high school AU conceit and give us an actual fantasy adventure movie set in Equestria, using the characters that made the show popular in the first place, instead of inexplicably identical doubles.

"Sorry for the delays. I am a horrible person."
Please stop.
It's okay.
Really.
