Wow, I've Written A lot · 9:40am Sep 9th, 2014
So, after a computer scare earlier today I got worried, and decided to do some backing up of everything I've written. When I did that, it was hard not to notice that the files were rather impressively large for what was a whole bunch of plain text, so I decided to do a word count of all my stories, just to see what it was.
The answer? 1,169,441 words.
Holy. Crap. I had no idea I'd written over a million words. I mean, I knew I'd done a lot of writing, but I had no idea it was that much. If only I got paid by the word count. Or at all, really.
So, thought I would share that. I'd do something special to mark the occasion, but I've got a pretty hefty editing backlog as it is.
Well, I will say one thing. That word count was including the unpublished "Why Do I Like Horse Women?" And counting something I haven't published yet is cheap, even if it's only 3500 words. So let's fix that. Hitting submit now...
That's 12 whole novels.
Woah.
That's more than I ever red.
Now THAT is a bigass of text! Congrats!
Awesome!
Still want more though...
dude... thats door stopper territory that is
I've actually edited more words than you've written. But then again, the return value of editing versus the return value of writing is quite different.
Well that is quite the amount of words
But who cares on the amount if they're awesome?
That's a lot of banging.
Congrats Chen! Pretty huge milestone we've got here.
Final word Count on the Harry Potter series: 1,084,170
For some perspective, Congrats
You should consider writing an ePub novel. Seriously, the average published novel is around 50-60k words long. Even long fantasy epics tend to be around 200-300k, which you've already surpassed four or five times over. You can honestly still have both fimfic and a paying salary here. Just write a new original novel once every six months and then ask your readers to buy it. I know I would.
According to wolfram|alpha, 1.169 megawords is...
~~ 1.5 × number of words in the King James Bible ( 789704 words )
~~ 1.9 × number of words in the Oxford English Dictionary, 2nd edition (~~ 600000 words )
~~ 2 × total number of words in A New Kind of Science ( 583313 words )
If you were to print it single spaced, it would take up 2,339 pages, which would be a stack 9.2 inches thick, weighing 23 pounds (based on 20 lb US Letter paper, 500 words/page, single sided). In a book format, it would be 3.5 inches thick.
According to calculations based on this list, 1.169 megawords is...
2.1 Atlas Shruggeds
2.4 Infinite Jests
1.7 Miss MacIntosh, My Darlings
Dayum ...
I think I've read every single one of them. Congratulations on the huge milestone! You should really consider putting some of this into paper format we can buy.
Wow, congrats man.

Try proofing Diaries of a Madman in a month long marathon of re-working... That was fun.
Also, if you need any help editing your heavily backlogged text, I would not mind at all. I actually really enjoy proofing stories, especially good ones that aren't full of grammatical landmines like some of the stuff people ask me to proof for them. And yeah, you've written a lot of words... Holy crap. Thoroughly enjoyed your last chapter of The Lunar Rebellion, by the way. That story is the bomb.
