Yes, there are more writers who have high quality fics, due to the wider array of available 'verses to write fics on. There are also a disproportionately large number of crapfic authors. How often do you browse fanfiction.net? I used to do it often, and it wouldn't be unusual for me to go through 5 pages before I found a fic that was even worth giving a try, and ten before I found one that ended up being any good.
I don't do it anymore. Too painful.
