More Derpy Shenanigans

Writing about Derpy I've been doing lately has gotten me thinking about characters who arise from community consensus rather than from one or two people sitting down and consciously deciding what that character's gonna be like. On the one hand, it gives me the sort of freedom I'm used to from the other story writing that I do where I hafta make everything up myself--since Derpy's not "in canon," no one can really say I'm writing her wrong.

But on the other hand, everybody has a general idea of what Derpy's like, of what she does and how she behaves, even someone like me who hasn't read all that many stories with Derpy in them. It's quite an interesting tight-rope to walk and actually led me to adding a Derpy poem to my ongoing Ponyville and Other Poems collection just to make sure I had her voice firmly rooted in my head. Which means I guess I'll hafta write a Gilda poem at some point soon...

I think you're doing a fine job of showing her so far. You've got the goofy and not terribly bright Derpy going well, and you haven't crossed over to the obnoxiously irritating Derpy yet. Well, at least not from the POV of the reader, though the characters might beg to differ.

The only difference I see between the writing over there and the writing over here is that I can legally sell the stuff over there. But I s'ppose money has a way of making things "realer," doesn't it?
