Controversy once again swirls around world-famous toy manufacturer Hasbro. A month ago, fans were in an uproar when Entertainment Weekly revealed plans to revamp the My Little Pony franchise with a new adventure-focused television series that would bring together characters from several generations of the venerable toy line. Fans are in an uproar again now that information about the planned spin-off series of novels has leaked to the press.
It is no surprise that G. M. Berrow, one of the fledgling century's most talented lady novelists, has been hand-picked to write the new series, since Berrow already pushed boundaries and blew minds with her controversial and award-winning phone book-sized epic, Through the Mirror. What is surprising is that the new Equestrienne Girls novels are being touted not as fantasy adventures, but as steamy romances.
"My Little Pony has always been something for mothers to enjoy along with their daughters," said Hasbro executive Andrew Hartwick in a press conference on Tuesday. "In keeping with that vision, these new books, which will be sold shrink-wrapped and discreetly covered with posterboard, are not meant for young girls, but for the lonely soccer moms of young girls."
He quickly added, "But the contents are in keeping with the show. These novels are, like, totally canon."
