I've never seen a place that's quite like this. Everything is turned around; this crazy world is upside down.

The First Story I Ever Wrote; or, 2001: A Literary Oddity · 2:13am Jul 3rd, 2014

Howdy, y'all.

In 2001, my life was very different. I was in my first grade of school, lived in a town I can barely recognize anymore, and was introverted almost to the point of disability. At just 6 years old, I had yet to discover many of the things that would comprise most of the next 13 years of my life. I hadn't so much as played a video game, let alone owned any console, and now I have a good 15 of the things lying around my room. I hadn't met the girl who would come to steal my heart for the next 11 years—something that was ultimately a big waste of time, I'm afraid. And I certainly hadn't started writing in any capacity yet.

But I did have a pet cat named Oreo, and boy did I love that cat.

We actually had 3 cats at the time—Oreo, Britney, and Smokey. I'm not entirely sure what drove me more towards Oreo than the other two, but I would guess it was the fact that he had asthma and made sounds like a motorboat whenever he purred. Yep, he was one hell of a cool cat.

Anyway, I was apparently bored to death one day and happened across my mom typing like mad at the computer. She was an aspiring novelist at the time (still is, in a way). She noticed my curiosity as to what she was writing about, and she decided to plop me on her lap and show me. Ever the momma's boy, I wanted to be a part of what she was doing, so pumped up the desk chair to an appropriate height and allowed me to run free with my imagination on the keyboard.

What a wonderful happenstance that turned out to be, eh?

Fast-forward to a couple of hours ago when I was cleaning out some old filing cabinets looking for tax stuff, and instead I found that very first story I ever wrote. Three copies of it, in fact, stapled like a proper manuscript—I remember printing out at least nine copies to show my close friends and family. I read through it for the sake of nostalgia, and it plastered a really stupid grin across my face. It's a story that's just as endearing in its plot as it is in its sentence structure.

In order to preserve it in a better place than the bottom of a filing cabinet teeming with numbers and dollar signs, I decided to transcribe the whole thing into a Google Document. And just because I can, I want to share it with all of you reading this.

So, if you're inclined to do so, please enjoy the spawn of a 6-year old's cat-obsessed mind. Please enjoy my very first foray into the world of literature. Please enjoy Oreo and the fangs of doom, completely untouched between 2001 and now. I even left the formatting and font the same, down to the last typo.

Keep on keeping on,
—Argon

P.S.: There was actually a sequel to this story called Oreo and the cats from Mars, and I even think there was a sequel to that one. If I find either of those stories anywhere, I'll be sure to let y'all know.

P.P.S.: For those curious about what may have become of Oreo and my other cats, let me make your day just a tad more morbid. Smokey was an outdoor cat. He went out into the forest behind our house one night and never came back. Britney lived a long, good life, but eventually succumbed to diabetes and had to be put down. Oreo was perfectly healthy when he vanished from the 3rd story of an apartment complex, never to be seen again.

Fuckin' cats, man. Gotta love 'em.

My favorite part is how the family just teleports to Alaska from one sentence to the next. The things we focus on as kids are always amazing. Thanks for sharing this. :D

Hocus pocus meow e crocus. :3

I remember my first story I wrote as kid, it was story of Hercules as told by kid he knew nothing Hercules, it read kind of like Conan the barbarian actually and always illustrated by me and by illustrate I mean stick figures but my elementary school was really neat and had our classes books bound nicely and given to us. I think it was then i discovered my love writting and or got my cutie mark. You story reminded me of that moment. It was fun and filled with an infectious whimsy that instant transported me back in time. Also as a fellow person who had cat when they were a kid I know that cat don't die or disappear they merely wait for the moment to strike when you expect.

Now that's some direct diction. You're like the Daniel Johnston of pony fics.
