I've noticed some oddities with the notifications myself. I'll get a notice saying "X posted a blog" is I follow the person, but if someone I read a story of but don't follow posts a blog tagged to said story I get no notice of it. Also have noticed a few times when I wasn't notified some commented on one of my stories.
Probably just some minor bugs in the system, but can be a tiny bit annoying at times (like finding out someone commented on a chapter a week after they posted the comment....)

Like, maybe trying to please readers with what you write makes your writing tight and less interesting! I can't be sure on that theory since I haven't read your other fics, though! 
Maybe there's some kind of system for attention set in place by some pony goddess so that you receive what you want in increments at times where you will be most gracious and least expecting! 
Or it's just coincidence!
