Question about tech stuff relating to Java · 5:24pm Jul 1st, 2014
So, I'm having a weird problem with this site, every few times I click a link, java gives me a big splash page saying that it needs to be updated. It's absolutely annoying and it's occasionally stopping me from viewing stories I want to read or doing things on my site like posting updates. I am not a very tech savvy individual, so I thought I would ask you all for help. No one will probably respond, but I don't have an idea on how to fix this. Also, while I could update Java if I got desperate enough, my firewall keeps me from making that terrible decision, so my ability to do stuff here is limited.
Your firewall is preventing you from updating Java?
If it's only happening every so often, as opposed to every time you click a link, my guess is that it's something to do with the ads; every so often, one comes up in the rotation that's trying to run a java applet for reasons which are probably nefarious, or at least annoying.
The easiest thing to do would be to just disable Java applets entirely; you don' t need them on this site. In Firefox: How to turn off Java applets
In Opera, it's even easier. Just right-click on an empty spot somewhere on this page, then select Edit Site Preferences, go to the Content tab, then set the checkboxes that says "enable plugins only on demand." After this, not only will Java applets not run automatically, neither will Flash, YouTube, or any other dancing-and-singing distractions. Instead, there'll be a round grey "play" button, and if you want the thing to run, you click it.

Erf. Not a clue, I'm afraid; I've never used Chrome.
It might be malware
2249955 I think it was, I yelled at it for a few hours and then it got fixed.
