Releasing a complete fanfic: All at once or a chapter a day? · 3:49am Jun 9th, 2014
So, the upcoming romance/comedy side-project of mine titled "Cupcake" is slated to be finished whenever it's finished, but that's beside the point. The point is that I am planning to not release it until it is complete.
However, what started as seeming like it would be a one-shot single-chapter type fanfic of around 10k-15k words is likely going to dwarf 20k and fit nicely into several chapters which will be titled as "Days" (i.e. chapter is "Day 1 - Just Add Sugar", chapter two is "Day 2 - Lightly Sweetened", etc...) and each chapter encompasses the events of a single day, the whole fanfic taking place over the course of a week in Ponyville.
So I am wondering... what do you all think is the best way to drop a completed fanfic that has chapters onto the site? Do I just drop the whole thing all at once, or release it one chapter per day over the course of a week? Either way, I'll submit it to Equestria Daily after it's fully dropped, which will probably bring in the majority of readers if past experience is to be believed... so a large number of readers may not even experience the once-a-day flavor.
Any opinions? Any different ideas than what I've presented? I'm all ears! :)
Once per day would be best for me.
Definitely once a day. More people will have the chance to see it on the update list if you were to post a chapter daily, rather than only having it appear once on the new story list. Also, suspense between chapters is a really good way to engage a reader in the story.
Definitely publish in parts, so the story can go to the top of the front page into the "Latest Updates" box. Just make sure that you tell the readers that you will update every day, so they will favorite the story to see the chapters on the consequential days.
Definitely a chapter a day.
