Teaser/Preview: MLBB II: 'Race The Sunset'

Spitfire blinked in relative silence, not sure exactly what to say before the smallest of the three Stalliongrad pegasi jerked his head up, squinting at the approaching dusk.

    She's coming back...

I haven't worked on this story in... Six years?
So I figure... "I really, REALLY need to finish this last chapter. I mean, it's the LAST chapter and it's been sitting for YEARS!"

So I've had the document open, for two weeks now, trying to recapture my 'voice' from six years back.

    Just a random story prompt...

If anyone's interested in writing a 3 to 5 thousand word short, be my guest. But I wanted to write out the prompt of sorts that popped into my head today.

Instant full body flush, just add vitamins...

    Tagging FtFoNR because medical shenanigans...

So, interesting experience today. I'd like to think I know how to handle dealing with vitamins and supplements. I do my research, I check safe doses, antagonists, read warnings.

But sometimes, something just slips through in a moment of complacency.

PSA from Princess Luna · 3:54pm May 21st, 2014

Here ye, here ye... etc. and so on.

This pamphlet has just been released by the Equestrian Royal Intelligence Service...

Please study it and know your changelings. Her royal highness is really getting tired of some of the stuff your subconscious comes up with.

That is all.

That's... interesting. not a lot of fics explain that kind of stuff, which can be annoying sometimes, thanks:derpytongue2:

Interesting, though having drones be that much rarer than queens seems kind of odd. Then again, you're probably better than I am at math by a hilarious margin, so I'm open to the idea that there's a reason I'm not aware of.

Ill tempered, eh? Seems about right.

If an average set of 100000 random changelings contains 99900 workers/warriors, 10 queens, and one drone, what are the remaining 89? Are they just victims of slightly-imprecise averaging, or are there more types not mentioned in the chart who fill in the remaining slots?

Is their tail one big club? Or is it a membrane like the drones' and queens' tails?

Wow, a proper propaganda-like PSA.

Wait wait wait- there's statistically more queens than drones? Huh.

Changelings do not consume meat, but only small animals and fish.

Last time I checked, those count as meat. Other than that, a really cool chart.

Photobucket still exists??

LOL. Sorry, i had to get that out of my chest.

2132355

Might want to read again there. Because that 'not' you read in that sentence is completely imaginary.

Haha I love that scribble under holes and nightmares

2132543 Wow, I must be cracking up or something. :unsuresweetie::pinkiecrazy:

I'm going to ignore this for the simple fact that this goes against my personal idea of how Changelings work... For more info about how I think Changelings work just look at the story: A Novel Tale.
Nothing personal...

2132274

One drone can "service" multiple queens.

In the next pic I made the drone a little smaller the Chrysalis. Guess I was right.

So now the burning question is... which one was following Randy around? :rainbowderp:

2132783

It's supplementary information for AdmiralTigerclaw's newest story. If you're reading the story, it'd be pretty hard to ignore. If not, it's already irrelevant to you.

(In much the same way that A Novel Tale's interpretation of changelings is incompatible with and ignored by many other changeling fics.)

2132570
It's not just you. I saw it too. :rainbowderp:

All of everyone's headcanon on changelings is blurring together into one mass of confusion that's intruding into my headcanon. I do like this interpretation though, save for the lack of holes on the Drones, which bothers me for some reason.

(For what it's worth, I see changelings as a one gender race where any two can reproduce with each other, and Chryssie was always shapechanged because of her conceit/tradition.)

I feel kinda offended that the lower class changelings are implied being... less than intelligent. Why? Everything else was nice... why the hell did you have to add the "caution" part?!?!?! THAT'S RIDICULOUS!!!

2135506

They're single-minded pony pleasers. It's not that they're stupid, but rather that they focus on what they're instructed to do to the borderline exclusion of anything else. If you take a single changeling and give it a task, it will perform that task to the best of its abilities. The more complex the task becomes, the higher the chance that it will succeed at the expense of everything that happens to be in its way.

Thus, if you ask a changeling to say, build a fence around your house, you are GOING TO GET a fence around your house. Guaranteed.

But don't come whining to me when you discover:

A: Said fence has no gate. (You didn't ask.)
B: Said fence is made from six different materials, including PVC pipes and razor wire. (Whatever works.)
C: Said fence cuts right through the garden. (That was important?)
D: Said fence adds a portion of your neighbor's yards to yours. (What's a property line?)

It's an awesome fence. It menaces of razors and it was surprisingly cheap and quick to build It's just... Execution leaves something to be desired.

If you take a group of changelings, this issue can scale exponentially if they don't organize into having a task supervisor 'ling. This will work if the tasks are still relatively simple industrious operations, but when you start getting into advanced construction techniques and sophisticated group procedures... You really need someone who knows the field the task is in.

For example, changelings have never built say, a steam boiler. They can learn how and WILL build one that works, but the mess they make in the process will be at CMC levels by the time they finish. Better to bring in a wider-minded individual, like a queen, a drone, or even ponies to act as supervisors for large, complicated tasks.

Imagine it as rules lawyer meets jackass genie meets Kasumi Tendo*. (*See: Ranma 1/2).

2135684 They sound extremely like robots... I still feel that said thing is... bad per say. I mean why? For that matter i generally find myself disagreeing with the whole insectoid thingie. They may look like it but are they insects really? I am just curious. Back to our topic though... they sound like Discord trolling Fluttershy in Keep Calm and Flutter on...

2135784

They can't be anything other than what they are. We're given this by the show: Shape-shifting bug-pony monsters that behave like a locust swarm and feed on positive emotions and magical energy like vampires. And... rather dumb ones at that. Hundreds of changelings attacking the Six in that fight, and they all shape shift into doppelgangers to the point they lose track of EACH OTHER... Even while staring right at the actual Six.

Like anyone else who's written them, I'm taking my liberties.

Anyway, they are less trolls, and more just used to being what they are. They aren't some advanced civilization. In fact, they don't even qualify for a civilization. They're tropical hybrid creatures focused on pleasing their queens and doing nothing more than simple specialized tasks. At most they may have colonies. At worst, they're nomads. Either way, they don't have any form of heavy fixed industry, let alone sophisticated industries requiring advanced planning skills.

Give them a few generations and they'll learn to think more broadly. But in the now, they're still single-minded, highly loyal little critters with a fixation on serving their queen. It's their history, and their nature.

2135925

They aren't some advanced civilization. In fact, they don't even qualify for a civilization.

That's racist...

Hundreds of changelings attacking the Six in that fight, and they all shape shift into doppelgangers to the point they lose track of EACH OTHER... Even while staring right at the actual Six.

Sure they might qualify for something like this... but it may have just been a false rouse to buy the others time. Just thinking right now doesn't mean that's true okay?

Either way, they don't have any form of heavy fixed industry, let alone sophisticated industries requiring advanced planning skills.

Perhaps... not like we've seen their socities to know right?

with a fixation on serving their queen.

That is not confirmed... they just... obey orders? Does that qualify as a fixation on obeying their Queen?

2135976

:rainbowderp:

*Falls out of his chair laughing.*

Did you REALLY just say 'that's racist' to a comment about them not qualifying for CIVILIZATION?
They don't show, on screen at any point, evidence of SIX of the seven requirements to classify as one. We could speculate that they might exist somewhere, but like any speculation, that doesn't mean anything.

:rainbowlaugh:

So if that's racism, then I guess I'm a horrible racist human supremist.

Yeah, I've lost the will to take anything you say seriously. Between this and your hilarious outrage concerning the fictional interpretation of non-existent creatures... Well. 'You're funny' is the polite way to term it.

2136009 :ajbemused: Well how about this? I find it a bit offensive the "way" you say it rather than if they are or not. I actually don't know the requirements for them to actually be a civilization i just know that you say that they are not simply because we haven't seen them much. In fact they've only truly appeared in one episode... and i don't think of it as evidence enough to support your claim.

I am of the belief that "I know one thing, i know nothing." and in fact until we see their homes i don't believe they even live in "hives" for that matter. I also don't believe the popular belief that the Queen gives birth to all the changelings or most of them... in my mind she would be extremely fat if she did that... she would be like Termite and ant Queens.

I believe they do have some ferocity in their nature... animalistic perhaps. Maybe the "civilized" part of the changelings is more likely centered around the Queen. We know for sure that they have ranks... But if you really want to stick to one wrongly worded comment be my guest...

One more thing... what the hell is "Thaumic Energy"? Also is this just your headcanon or just some attempt to record show-canon? Cause if it's the latter i am not exactly buying it.

2134670 I...

What I meant was that I wasn't going to think about it to much because of conflicting interpretations... more specifically that Drones are dumb

2136051

Like I said, I'm not taking you seriously anymore. You're getting hilariously bent out of shape over fiction. We COULD sit and discuss the merits of pure speculation on one-shot villains. But unless you expect to suddenly see 'Lingtopia pop up as a nation, there's really no point in carrying on a topic of debate about it. I've chosen to build the changeling species based on my interpretation of the 'one thing, no-thing' evidence you're believing in. I'm no more 'right' than you are except that it's my story, thus everything I choose is as right as I want it to be. If you don't like it, your disagreement is noted but ignored.

As for 'thaumic'. Is effectively a word meaning 'to do magic' or a miracle, and is used unofficially as a word that takes the place of the word 'magic'. As I'm writing it, it's effectively interchangeable with magic, with Thaums being one of the many labels for a measurement of magical energy. (Which could be mana, vis [for those who use Thaumcraft for Minecraft], even real world joules.)

Thus, changelings consume 'magic'. (1600 thaums daily to stay healthy), which is a liberal interpretation of them eating 'love'.

2136110 Well you sure are quick to arm the gun aren't you? Sure okay i just disagree... never tried to force something to you. I just aired my opinion is all... you are the one who raised the stakes per say... No need to get worked up about it. Just saying...

2136123

It's fiction, sometimes you just need to roll with it.

Also, I participate on some seriously heated debates on Spacebattles from time to time. I knew where this was going and I'm not in the mood for a twenty hour debate. In reality, the whole 'know one thing, know nothing' schtick may be true. But in fiction, the 'one thing' may be the 'only thing... ever'.

We could argue like that... And then Changelings could get a whole story arc in season five showing them to be space aliens, or a genetic experiment gone wrong from princess Celestia's younger days.

2136134 Well to be honest i never hold grudges and i am always up for a nice friendly debate if you want. For all we know Hasbro may pop up tomorrow and say that "The changelings are Flutterponies!" tada! And we would be like... waaaaaaa? Yes indeed sometimes fiction is open for interpretation... I prefer to be open minded... and not deny anything. I only have problem with those who are absolutely certain about things... and people that claim to be "know-it-alls". I just didn't want us to fight over something so trivial :fluttershysad: but i still wanted to talk about it in general. It's obvious that the more we talk about it the more it's going to get "serious" in a way simply because of the time we are consuming on this. So while this is indeed all needless... we can maintain a level of seriousness that is respectable even for fiction without getting upset about it.

2136071

I quite like A Novel Tale but I don't remember it mentioning that drones are dumb. If it did, I'm glad it was insignificant enough that I could ignore it.

2138422 It does not. This mentions that they are, I was comparing this to Novel Tale... I had other things to worry about when I wrote that comment...

2140027

In the fic or in the chart? ...because, even looking for it, I can't see any mention of that in the chart.

In the chart it says under the Drones:

Caution: Single-minded
Do not trust with complex tasks unsupervised!

2140090
first of all: that are the workers/warriors the drone is the male who breeds the queen
second: single minded doesn't mean dumb it means that the workers/warriors concentrate on a single task while completely blending everything else out.
or has tigerclaw said above:

Thus, if you ask a changeling to say, build a fence around your house, you are GOING TO GET a fence around your house. Guaranteed.

But don't come whining to me when you discover:

A: Said fence has no gate. (You didn't ask.)

B: Said fence is made from six different materials, including PVC pipes and razor wire. (Whatever works.)

C: Said fence cuts right through the garden. (That was important?)

D: Said fence adds a portion of your neighbor's yards to yours. (What's a property line?)

(in fact I would say intelligent people are often more prone to being single minded than the common guy, probably due to the "if you have a hammer" effect^^)

2142218

first of all: that are the workers/warriors the drone is the male who breeds the queen

meh... specifics... *shrug*
