Season Finale Follw-up/review thingy: Twilight's Kingdom Part 1 · 9:13pm May 14th, 2014
It's time.
Twenty-four episodes and it all comes down to this. Boy, what a season! We've had ups and downs, but I think it was pretty solid overall. Now, just how will the DHX team finish it? Who will our new villain be? Will Twilight get her key? What's in the box?
Finally, all our questions will be answered.

Welcome to the Crystal Empire! ...Again! They're really making use of this place, I mean, we've been here almost as many times as we've been to Canterlot. Better than fading into obscurity thought. Crystal what? Oh, you mean that place we saved way back in season 3? Yeah, no one cares about that anymore.

I stopped hating Flash Sentry a loooong time ago, when I remembered he's just a cartoon character and it's not his fault he was written rather poorly. No, now I just take enjoyment knowing that somewhere out there, there are people frothing at the mouth when they see him.

So, we've sort of come full circle this season. Twilight feels uncertain about her role as a princess and wonders why she became one in the first place. A question many have been asking since the season 3 finale. For marketing, duh.
Meta jokes aside, Twilight's doubt are founded. What has she done this season other than the norm of saving Equestria?
Well, she was the judge at the trade fair.
I don't think you need to be a princess to claim that Rainbow engaged in Pony trafficking.

This is why Applejack is second-best pony.
Dude with the deep voice is the bad guy. Calling it now.
T.V science proves that anyone with a voice that deep is either going to be a badass, or a bad guy. He doesn't look like badass material so it's clearly the latter. On a side note, I like the other pony's design a lot!
"Why is she singing? We're like, two steps away from her."
Twilight singing? Well, we haven't had a good song in a while.

It's Lord Tirek! Holy flippen Hell! I didn't see that coming! Mind=blown! Holy s*yaay* They're so boned! Of all the times I committed myself to not spoiling the episode before hand, this totally paid off! Best surprise ever! Such nostalgia, so G1, wow!

Seriously though, it took me reading the EQD follow-up to realize Celestia sleeps with her regalia on. That's pretty egotistical.
Is not. She needs to be prepared for her royal duties at all times.

Story time!
Long ago, in the magical land of Equestria... wait, wrong beginning. Sometime before Luna's banishment (because nothing interesting happens after that) Tirek and Scorpan were totes about to take over Equestria. But then Scorpan met Starswirl and they chilled and stuff. Then Scorpan went back to his bro and was all like, "Hey, man, maybe we could just be tight with these ponies and hang with them." But Tirek was all like, "Blargh! Friendship stupid!"
Your storytelling is horrible. Please, stop while you're behind.
...Anyway, Scorpran pretty much ratted out his brother to the mighty Royal Sister and they sent his butt to Tartarus. Bam, princess power!
My question is, if Starswirl met Scorpan, just how old is that wizard? Clover the Clever mentions him as her mentor in the Hearth's Warming story, and that was before the Princess' rule! And he was around right before Luna became Nightmare Moon! What, was he immortal or something?
Time-travel. Either way, I smell a possible plot for season 5. That, and what happened to Scorpan after he left was never revealed. Perhaps a trip to a distant land is in order.
Anyways, Tirek got loose (nice callback to season 2 with Cerberus) and now, there's only one creature who can stop him!
Princess Discord!
You're right. They're doomed.
At least Fluttershy thinks he's amusing. Which brings up the topic of they're dynamic. I absolutely love the bond between Fluttershy and Discord. It just speaks on so many levels. Now, I wouldn't ship them, but I do love seeing them together. The Master of Chaos and the only one who can keep him in line, not through threat or force, but because her friendship means something to him.
Which is also the perfect set up for what's going to come.
Your princess is not amused.
Aaaaand we have our final contestants for the best face contest. Twilight with her unamused look is always a classic. Half the reason I kept watching season 1 was because of that and her sarcasm.
Oh hey, plot device!
Riiight, that box we picked up at the beginning of the season. Almost forgot about that, you know since we left here under the tree where any forest animal or Zecora could just take it.
Zecora?
You don't know what that Zebra is up to in her spare time.

That door looks cushiony. I wonder if Discord just walked into an asylum. Also, great balancing act Twi.

Wow, wasn't expecting a best face entry from Tirek.
Meanwhile, we a have a confrontation of villainous proportions. The OG badass vs. the slightly reformed Lord of Chaos.

There's a police movie joke here I'm sure, I just haven't seen enough police movies to make one.

Yeah... I think Discord just won best face.
I really loved that line. Discord's only reason for helping take down Triek is for Fluttershy. I demand more screentime devoted to the two of them next season!
Of course, Tirek has a way with words and starts buttering up Discord to join him instead. After all, if Discord caught Tirek this early, what would we fill the airtime with?
"Throw the world into chaos... or be friends with the cute one... choices."
Time to see if Discord has learned anything about friendship. In his defense, no matter how cute Fluttershy is, she's only one pony. Perhaps if the others had made a tiny bit more of an effort to tolerate him, he'd have more to consider.
That "pony errand boy" comment probably struck a chord as well.
Have they been there an entire day?
So they do all that research only to realize the answer was in the first book Discord gave them. Better late than never I guess.

While I'm at it. How does Applejack know that bit is the one Silver Shell gave her? That could just be an ordinary bit. That would've been hilarious.
"Applejack, where's your key?"
"Ah... might have spent it."
"On what? And if you say 'apples' so help me..."

They Key of Destiny Laughter.
Five keys have been gathered. All we need now is Twilight to get her sixth key and we can activate the new Deux Ex Machina! I mean... friendship! Yeah! Also kinda relieved those objects weren't the key's actual form. Though again, would have been funny watching Applejack insert her bit like the box was a slot machine. Pretty sure there's a comic close to that.
Hey, haven't seen that in a while. No one seems impressed anymore.
Discord has chosen... poorly.
The Lord of Chaos has rejoined the dark side. Called it. You're all kinda screwed.
"I'm about to drop a cliffhanger so hard!"
I can't stop replaying what Tirek's monologue to turning Discord over to his side. That is my favorite part of the finale next to DBZ Twilight.
You know, that part with Spike shooting a fire ball at Fluttershy's face also looks like Fluttershy draining Spike of his magic, Tirek style, while Applejack and Rarity look unimpressed, like as if turning into a batpony and dressing up in a bee custome has dulled them to this.
Awesome finale! Best by far! I knew the season would deliver, I was saying that from the beginning. Is this only part one? Cause there's no review score, unless I missed it. I'm assuming you liked it though. I did! Tirek's plan, Discord's double change of heart, and the DBZ-without-the-talking battle!

OMG!!
I thought I was the only one to notice that. In this form, Tirek looks like Rafiki, doesn't he? At the same time, when he was turning Discord back to the Dark Side, his voice made me think of Scar for some odd reason.
I find it hard to believe that Discord has learned so little and sees his relationship with Fluttershy as disposable. Especially given how he maneuvered the Mane 6 in the beginning and proceeded to not tell Tirek and ignore it himself. I prefer to believe that he was in fact participating in some Celestia-tier manipulation with Twilight and Tirek. Perhaps Celestia is no longer allowed to do the manipulation since Twilight is an Alicorn.
Because seriously, who didn't see Tirek's betrayal coming a mile away? And that line- "I truly did not" - felt almost patronizing the second time around. Especially coming form the near omnipotent Lord of Chaos.
