Is it not enough to just have the character themselves come to Equestria. Even that has issues if it is just the character and not other aspects of the world which makes them inorganic and stick out like, well, a thumb in a land full of hooves. That's why it's called a crossover not an insertover. It's supposed to cross, mesh, and blend aspects.
This costumed person stuff is just a fancy way of using HiE but with an addition to pad out a thin premise because it's still the human world and the world of whatever costume they came from doesn't exist outside that character.
Plus, its developmentally flawed since you have to both develop the human character and the character they're portraying plus stick them in Equestria. That's a lot of major concept that is easily convoluted or not properly fleshed out because the author just wants to say "Look at this popular concept! I'll do it with my own character! My self-inssert turned Monkey D. Luffy will be the best story ever!" Then why not just tell a damn One Piece crossover to start with!?
So, in short, this is the first fanfic concept that I have a truly passionate hate for.

I completely agree with you there. I've recently been seeing those types of stories around and they aren't good. Why would that person who is cosplaying as a character even be turned into the character they are cosplaying as? It makes no sense. Just because they're cosplaying as someone and sent to a different dimension, does not mean that they are magically turned into the character they are cosplaying as. If they are turned into the character that they are cosplaying as the author should have a somewhat good reason for why the main character was turned into that character, not "just because they're cosplaying as that character". Those types of fan fictions basically don't make any sense.

I tried to edit/preread a story like that once, when I was still idealistic and naive. It wasn't even cosplaying, the main character of the story was brought to Equestria by an Act of God, as an OC superhero. And the best thing was that the writer had never been to TV Tropes or a similar site, and didn't previously know what a Mary Sue was.
There were a lot of tropes in that story, and it might be better that it got cancelled before it was published.

That's not a good reason for a character to go to Equestria. And the whole OC superhero thing isn't that great of an idea either. I have to agree that it was a good thing that the story was never put onto this site, otherwise it would've gotten a lot of hate.

The story was based on the Mayan end-of-the-world premise. And there were a lot of tropes. And the worst thing was that all the ponies were anthro ponies, which I just can't get into

Add in the fact that you're not even getting the original aspects of either right because you're piling too many ideas into one story.
well you have to consider not everyone wants to do an exact crossover, and if you think about it if you do a HiE story you have to remember this world isn't all cute and cuddly with its magic absorbing demons and mythological monsters. As for the how they get their powers thats a coin toss issue for me i mean sure the "i was in a costume at the time" isn't my fav way every other one i've seen is okish
but yeah i don't want to depend on brightly colored ponies to save my butt constantly so i would love the super powers.
