    I'm (still) not quite dead...

I'm sorry, I am so very sorry for the lack of updates on, well, anything. A few of you have probably noticed that I've still been putting in the occasional appearance or comment, but as for chapter updates...yeah I've barely written anything for months for various reasons - work sucks, arranging a couple vacations, a falling out in my D&D group of 14 years, and just a sort of malaise that

    When you're writing a chapter...

And listening to music to keep yourself in the mood, and then you hear a song that has you suddenly realize that you've been writing the entire chapter wrong and should have instead been basing it around the song - not necessarily using the song directly (especially since that would be against site rules concerning wholesale copying of lyrics), but certainly drawing on it for inspiration.

The Good News and the Bad News

The good news is that I got a root canal on Monday. No more pain in teeth. Yay!

The bad news is that I was 3/4ths of the way through the next chapter of Midnight Castle (~5000 words) and realized that I was writing it totally wrong. I need to go back to practically the start and change up a lot, though I'm salvaging lines and paragraphs wherever I can.

How the Hell does Lunaverse canon keep surviving these episodes? · 3:05pm May 10th, 2014

Seriously, I don't get it. I'm not complaining, mind, but I don't get how it keeps surviving.

Hell, if anything it partially reinforced things. How come Tirek has heard of Cadance but not Twilight? Cause Cadance is much older than we've been led to believe. Or that's what I'm gonna say, anyway.

Well shit. Sometimes things have a way of going your way

Because you wrote a world close to the original that allows itself for easy manipulation to cannon.

Yeah, I was pretty amused at how well the story they gave in the finale for Tirek works for his weakened status in The Return of Tambelon.

2095644 And that he feeds on souls?

You can figure out a way. If anything, reverse Tirek and Discord in your stories. Best of luck with the next book.

Or it could just be because Cadence has been an Alicron Princess for a longer time then Twilight has. :applejackunsure:

Yeah, but how much longer? Tirek reacted to Discord like he knew him personally, but that would mean that Tirek was around at least 1,000 years ago and presumably has bee imprisoned for much of the intervening time.

Him not being aware of Twilight is pretty much specifically because he was imprisoned, but why then wouldn't he be aware of Cadance as well? Unless Cadance's apotheosis was much longer ago than we've been led to believe by the comics.

Which actually makes a degree of sense...given the huge hub-bub around Twilight's appointment to Princessdom, you'd think it'd be the kind of thing that a lot of ponies remember and so you'd think the same would be said of Cadance's own apotheosis. But when she ascended, Rarity commented that she'd never heard of a pony ascending to alicorn status the way Twilight has.

This suggests to me that it happened long enough ago that it's passed out of living memory - we're talking many decades, maybe even centuries of time.

It was a rather eerily close interpretation of Tirek as compared to how you portrayed him. Not perfect, but close enough to handwave.

How come Tirek has heard of Cadance but not Twilight? Cause Cadance is much older than we've been led to believe.

Potentially, though still perhaps a bit suspect, or rather more so just how Celestia would ever think Tirek unable to locate Twilight. If he supposedly escaped back in S2, one might think he'd have been around to hear about that huge coronation celebration at the end of S3. Even discarding that, Discord had already betrayed them and of course he'd be all too aware of Twilight being a forth alicorn.

Yeah, that was the one flaw in the episode...

Celestia: "We must give up our alicorn powers!"
Twilight "That's dumb. You're dumb."

But, eh. It fell apart almost instantly, the way it was supposed to.

...side note, I know that she was called the Princess of Friendship, but I'm pretty sure we all know that Twilight's real role is the Warrior Princess.

Celestia: "We must give up our alicorn powers!"
Twilight "That's dumb. You're dumb."

The part that really stood out to me was more so that this is the SECOND time that Celestia has instructed Twilight to leave her friends out of the loop and go it alone. This is all giving me serious doubts about just how wise ol' sunbutt actually is. She's already told us that Starswirl's greatest failing was his inability to understand friendship, but increasingly it seems as though Celestia might not really grasp the concept very well herself, nor that she is anywhere near the chessmaster the fandom has long considered her to be.

I'm still inclined to believe that she did indeed mentor Twilight to reawaken the dormant Elements of Harmony and use them to defeat Nightmare Moon. She also seems to have clearly meant for Twilight to do so by discovering the magic of friendship for herself, as per her instructions when sending her to Ponyville. I'm, however starting to think that Twilight had been intend to wield the Elements all by herself (just as Celestia had before), not to share that power among the friends she made. Likewise, purifying Luna rather than just banishing her again may have been equally a happy accident.

This might also place more of the blame for Sunset Shimmer going bad on Celestia's shoulders. That it wasn't just Sunset's failure to learn the importance of friendship, but Celestia's lack of qualification to even teach such lessons in the first place.

...

Oh, and there's also that whole thing about trying to reform the lord of confusion/evil/chaos just because his powers could be "useful", which certainly is nothing that has ever come back to bite them all in the ass. :ajbemused:

I'll be honest, greatest thing about this episode is pretty much full vindication that 'Keep Calm and Flutter On' was one big "You are idiots" for the entire damned thing.

2096741 What did you think about FiM's Tirek?

So when is Trixie getting her pair of wings in the Lunaverse anyway? I mean she obviously needs them to go super sayian like Twilight in the main canon? :trixieshiftright:

2096529
I think you might be giving Discord way too much credit.

Outside of marking the pages of the journal, he doesn't really do anything but constantly make things worse throughout the episode. Nor is there really anything in his dialogue or other ways the narrative is constructed to suggest that at any point he was faking his betrayal. Most notable after Tirek steels his magic and AJ throws his, "Surely you saw this coming?" line back at him, Discord perfectly echoes similar distress to Fluttershy when replying, "I didn't. I really didn't."

Besides, if he really had planed out the whole thing, if his betrayal had been a ploy the whole time then I think he'd have earned a throne of his own in the Castle Harmony, rather than being still considered a work in progress. Besides, if his betrayal wasn't genuine than he wouldn't actually have needed Twilight to teach him a lesson on friendship and thus the amulet he gave her couldn't become her key.

2097490
I don't plan on Trixie becoming an alicorn. Which isn't to say I don't have plans for her, it's just that she has a different path to walk from Twilight.

2099536
That's nice to hear. I think it'd really mess up the dynamic the Luna-verse has, as it did sort of injure canon a bit in my opinion. But still, if Trixie and Twilight from the Luna-verse ever re-meet their doppelgangers from the mane-verse I can't imagine them being very happy about it.

How would Trixie and Twilight deal with that discovery? I could imagine it hurting L-verse Twilight more then Trixie. Twilight from the Luna-verse would have even more reason to think of might have beens.

2099560
Which is part of the reason why I established multiversal travel as nearly impossible except during specific windows.

2099589
I remember. Just seems like such a revelation would be a very interesting thing for both your characters to try to deal with. Even just the thought that such things are possible.

2097490 the Lunaverse Princess of Friendship is Dinky! Due to multiversal disparity the whole event will be happening a few years later :derpytongue2:

2100748
Even though ya meant that as a joke could see that as being plausible. Super talented magic using unicorn. Two princesses who are likely pretty close friends. Two super talented magic using tutors...I could VERY easily see that happening. Add to the fact that Dinky doesn't have the emotional baggage of Trixie and Twilight in this and has had much more grounding in friendship? Seems like it could work out.

2099536

To become Night Light´s successor, we already know.

It looks like that Celestia and Discord were cooperating the whole time. We can believe that Discord could be persuaded to follow Tirek but thats impossible. He was only pretending. The wink in the end was the needed evidence that they orchestrated the whole thing.
