Quick Thoughts on the Equestria Games · 10:11pm May 4th, 2014
I'm about 50/50 on it. For what was given, it was pretty good, mostly. Could have done without Cadance bowing to Spike. And, God, that anthem. I've never cringed so hard in my life. I couldn't even watch while it was happening. Even in hindsight, it's not funny. Still, the episode had a pretty good moral: you are your own harshest critic. As writers, I think a lot of us can take that to heart. And Spike's 'Ello gawgoeus' moment was great.
Granted, I can see why a lot of people were disappointing with the episode. I mean, we did kinda use three episodes across two seasons to build it up. I have to admit, I'm a little let down myself at what little we got to see, but I'm too sure what I was even expecting. The only event we would find ourselves rooting for is the arial relay, since it's the only one we have ponies to root for. But, I guess they could have given us more of that race between Rainbow and Spitfire. Other than that, what would we have seen? A montage of ponies playing different events? That would have been a pretty lackluster episode.
So, it could have been better, it could have been worse. I see why people liked it, I see why people hated it. For me, it was just all right. Taken as a singular episode, it was pretty good. Looking it as the end of a story arc... yeah, it's kind of a poor ending. I give it a 7 out of 10, and that's being rather generous. Looking back, I've been pretty generous with all of my scores. I gave Power Ponies a 7.5. Pretty sure it was worse than this. I'll have to be a bit tougher next season.
Well, break time is over. Hopefully I'll find time to write a full follow-up for the season finale. I'll also be doing a follow-up for Equestria Girls 2 later down the road, just because I can.
kak
Spike has the best British/Irish accent ever. Just. MMM.
Spike might be in the running for my new male waifu.
yeah, that anthem was the only time in the entire series that I actually covered my ears and looked away (for some reason when I see a character in an embarrassing situation, I get embarrassed too).
I also thought the games would start in this episode and end during the finale. True, the Grand Galloping Gala also had 2 or 3 episodes leading up to it and it only lasted one episode, but that was one night, this is a week!
And the Spike worship was also kind of dumb, or at least reached dumb levels.
4/10 for this week
