Worldbuilding/Silly Speculation: what do the main six drink? · 10:00am Apr 17th, 2014

What your character orders to drink says a lot about them. The type of beverage, how it's prepared, and how much it costs all paint a picture of preferences that adds verisimilitude and detail to a character's day-to-day life.

Here is what I think the Main Six would drink, and why. I tried to include at least one alcoholic and one non-alcoholic beverage in every entry.

Rarity is the coffee type. She is the type of person pony who would stop by Starbucks every morning for a complicated latte or possibly a caramel/hazelnut macchiato. She's good friends with the barista--she made his fiance's wedding dress--so she tips generously. The barista always draws a flower in her foam.
If she has to work a long night to finish a project then she drinks water--coffee dulls creativity.
Alone in her house, relaxing with a nice magazine and possibly a bubblebath, she drinks wine. A 2-3 year-old white from a local winery--not extravagant, but still pleasant. She doesn't drink red wine, because it has more calories. Whenever she goes to a party she brings a bottle as a gift.

Fluttershy drinks tea; she buys teabags in bulk from the local grocery store, and she hasn't changed brands in ten years. She once tried "real" tea. Somepony told her that "teabags are to tea what informational pamphlets are to doctors." and insisted she try the actual thing. It was too strong for her.
At parties she drinks appletinis or screwdrivers, with way way less vodka than they should have.

Pinkie Pie drinks chocolate milk or milkshakes or root beer floats, depending on the atmosphere. She likes sweet tea on occasion--she's the "sugar syrup when cold" type rather than the "mix in sugar when hot" type.
Her favorite flavor of soda is Hawaiian Punch. Her second favorite is Berry Lemonade. Her third favorite is a seven-way tie.
At a cocktail party, she drinks anything that has vanilla in it. The Milky Way Galaxy is her favorite. She carries a bottle of vanilla extract with her wherever she goes though, so it's not a big deal if the bartender doesn't know how to make it.

Twilight Sparkle drinks tea or coffee. She read a book on bartending, a book on coffee preparation, and a book on traditional tea ceremonies, so she likes to think she can handle any beverage crisis that might arise. When it comes to actually preparing her tea, she follows ISO Standard. The type of tea is less important than the process.
She drinks Long Island Iced Tea, mostly because it is so evenly measured.

Rainbow Dash drinks Gatorade and variants or plain water. She doesn't drink coffee, tea, or other caffeinated drinks since it messes up her nap schedule. She may have a diet, decaf, low-cal soda on occasion, however.
Rainbow Dash drinks light beer. The cheaper the better. Yes, it tastes terrible, but the fewer calories the better. Not that calories are a problem for Rainbow Dash, since she's so amazing at everything, obviously.

Applejack drinks apple juice, lemonade, or water, depending on how hot out it is. She also drinks cider, but not very much since it's for the customers.
When it comes to beer, AJ only drinks microbrewed craft beers. She met a brewmaster during a farming convention and they became pen pals. Whenever she is in Trottingham she always stops by his brewery and picks up a case or two. But not that often, because that stuff is expensive, and she insists on paying full price.

Sometimes I wonder if I don't use my time well, then I realize the obvious answer: of course I don't.

I do love random headcanon like this. Also:

Yes, that's a cup of coffee.

2018263 Wow--I don't even have an emoticon for that.
It makes me think of that one speedpaint video where the artist drew a car in MSPaint--the handicap is impressive, but I can't help but wonder why someone would bother.

...and now Ive spent ten minutes looking at latte art on google. You monster :fluttercry:

I cannot even begin to see how this could be considered a poor use of time. This to me says a lot about how you think of the mane 6 and I personally really love it n_n Got any more?

hi hi

Actually, I would think that Rainbow Dash would need to be careful to make sure she's having enough calories, rather than worrying about too many. Professional athletes can burn through upwards of 12,000 calories per day.

2018384 Celestia drinks Scotch--Scotch whiskey is the go-to drink for politicians and eventually she learned to like it. Luna drinks absinthe, although these modern ponies have forgotten how to make proper absinthe. I imagine being old and magical has built up their tolerance a bit, so when they drink, they drink a lot. Celestia has a habit of drinking overconfidant politicians under the table--not for any political maneuvering, just to prove she can. The gryphons still talk about the time she outdrank the entire Arcadian envoy in under an hour.

Big Mac drinks malt liqueur. Cheerilee drinks wine coolers. Trixie drinks cheap black coffee, but mixes honey in. Daring Do drinks kopi luwak that she harvested herself. Bulk Biceps drinks plain milk (builds strong bones!). Granny Smith drinks beet juice.

2018396 Fair point, but I don't think an athlete would want to make large quantities of alcohol a regular part of their diet. Better to drink the cheap junk at social occasions and disrupt your eating pattern as little as possible.

Plus Rainbow Dash naps a lot--yes, you burn calories during sleep, but I doubt her training regimen is as non-stop as some other top-tier athletes.

Your picture reminded me of the Sinfest webcomic. For whatever reason, they stopped loading into feedly. Just got it back now.

Well, the real danger with alcohol for an athlete is the dehydration. However, professional athletes do have to make rest an important part of their training regimen. Overtraining syndrome is a big problem for athletes, and taking time off, sometimes entire days off, is critically important for top-tier athletes. Top Tier athletes will typically train for four or five hours per day, while getting lots of rest. Training breaks you down, resting is what builds you back up again. (And that requires energy.) Not as much energy as when you are on an active day, but still more than someone who isn't training. So it is important to disrupt your eating pattern on a day to day basis already.

"We have trouble getting athletes to the table sometimes, they'd rather nap." - Alicia Kendig, US Olympic committee sports dietitian.

Not to say that Rainbow Dash is necessarily the most intelligent trainer, not by any means, but research done by the University of Washington and the University of Wisconsin suggest that for athletes, a dark beer/Guinness is the healthiest option, due to the extra nutritional content.

I'm not sure how you can have Luna drinking anything other than moonshine. :rainbowhuh:

2018459 Well, that is where my pic is from, so that would make sense :raritywink:

2018534 The more you know. I'm the farthest thing from a professional athlete, so all of this is new to me :derpytongue2:

Still, Rainbow Dash always struck me as the type who gets by on natural talent rather than training (as pretty much all her episodes involving the Wonderbolts show). Not to say she's incapable of planning or care when it's something she cares about, obviously.

2018979 too easy

I may not be an athlete myself, but I did grow up in a family of marathon runners and national level swimmers, so I picked up on a lot of it. I think Rainbow Dash is one of the most misunderstood characters, at least amongst people I'm familiar with, in part because being a serious athlete isn't very close to their own experiences.

Back in Season 1 anyways, when they were still writing to the "Educational and Informative" standards, Rainbow Dash was an archetypal athlete in a lot of ways. In her first appearance in Friendship is Magic pt.1 she's in the middle of practicing. We see her preparing for the Best Young Flier competition (100 times in practice), and we hear her being concerned about over-preparing. She's practicing new routines in Applebuck season. And we get to see the all too common dichotomy between pre-game nerves and getting in "the zone." And napping a lot. :)

Anyways, thats an awful long tangent, but its something I'm familiar with, and so I'm super duper extra glad you found my ramblings informative.

Back on the topic of drinks though... Rainbow Dash's competative side might predispose her to playing beer pong, and that requires large amounts of cheap beer. (The cheaper the better.)

Also.
• Derpy Hooves: Orange juice. Next to a tall glass of milk, few things go down as well as orange juice, when paired with a nice warm muffin. For a harder drink, the Cape Cod takes one of the greatest muffin ingredients and puts it in a glass.

• King Sombra: Crystal Pepsi. :trollestia:
