The Words I'll Never Write · 4:08am Apr 16th, 2014

Some would go as far as to say
That I try to walk the lighted way
And never speak. Well they'd be right,
Because these are the words I'll never write.

While walking down a foggy avenue
In the dark of night just after two,
A man slips barely out of sight—
He has the words I'll never write.

I give him chase, running down the street
As he tries to escape me and keep
Concealed behind the dead of night
Holding the words I'll never write.

Clinging to youth, I am much faster
Than this petty thief—an athletic disaster.
Nearing him, I smile bright;
I'm going to get the words I'll never write.

I catch him and pull him by the waist
So he is forced to see my face.
I laugh with unconstrained delight
As I take back the words I'll never write.

But as he turns to me I realize
I'm staring into my own eyes.
I shake and stir, I tremble in fright,
Forgetting the words I'll never write.

Though my fear subsides when I look at him:
His face is gray and deathly grim.
He beckons me, but I give no fight.
I return him the words I'll never write.

Then, all of a sudden, I'm awake,
And all my anger dissipates.
Immediately vanishes the blight
Of the forsaken words I'll never write.

I'm sometimes not sure what I see,
Like if that man was truly me.
But I only lied to you once tonight:
These aren't the words I'll never write.

I'm terrible at discerning meaning in poetry; I've read it three times and I still can't begin to guess at what "the words I'll never write" might be. But with that last line I feel like you're telling me it's as plain as day, or at the very least that you revealed them. But again, I'm so utterly green when it comes to poetry that my ineptitude here doesn't really surprise me.

But for what it's worth, I still like it. I wonder what the "lighted way" is to you, and what it has to do with not speaking or writing.
