    Where I've Been

    Wow... it's been a while.

So... yeah. Where have I been? I've been at home. And I didn't realize it until this weekend, but I've been pretty unhappy since this whole mess with the pandemic began.

My Little Pony: A New Generation

Well, the last month has been a nightmare of overtime and fixing up my house, but today I managed to see the premiere of G5.

    Look Before Your Sleep

Well, here we are. Another inevitable episode about these different ponies who had little in common now having to put up with each other after having a mutual friend in Twilight. I can picture this already having happened between Rarity and Rainbow Dash, having learned to live with each other after having a mutual friend in Fluttershy.

    Where I've Been

Yeah... I'll bet you're wondering about my absence lately. I swear I didn't mean to take one.

Until the pandemic actually ends (and I mean ends, not just when everything opens back up) I'm going to be working overtime. I'm hoping it's coming to an end, but there is still mandatory hours for June.

I have a lot in the pipes, and I will still rereview the series. Just... please be patient.

Leap of Faith review! · 12:40am Apr 7th, 2014

Nothing to say, dive right in:

We open with the reveal that Granny Smith used to be a high diver. And Big Mac is a prankster... who knew?

After the cold opening, Granny Smith and the others actually forbid Apple Bloom from following in Granny’s footsteps... hm. Then we see an exodus of sick ponies and what do you know, it’s Flim and Flam. I await the end of the episode where they reform, since that’s what happens to villains in this show. Also, despite being the most adamant against them last time, Granny Smith buys right into it. I’m not saying that’s bad, just interesting. Anyway, the brothers are peddling a cure all tonic, which Granny buys.

The cure apparently works, as Granny can go swimming again. Applejack wonders what makes the cure so effective. Gee, too bad you don’t know a talented magician/scientist who can analyze it for you. Seriously, I’d have love to see Twilight wondering how all her years of study never amounted to anything like this.

But they go back to Flim & Flam’s tent, and find that the whole thing was a con. A straight con. I feel vindicated, since just mentioning Flim & Flam got arrested in Post Nuptials got everyone rushing to their defense. Still, they point out that the tonic made Granny fearless and she’s enjoying life.

So now we get Applejack coming into conflict with her Element. Rainbow episode! And yes, Applejack decides to play along. This works fine until the following scene. She goes from trying to stop Granny from doing anything to encouraging her to sign up for a swim meet a little too quick, considering she knows it’s a scam.

The following scene is brilliant, though. Not only is Applejack in conflict with her element, but it works against her when her rep causes everyone else to buy it the minute she vouches for it.

Granny and Apple Bloom win the competition, but when Granny tries the high dive, Applejack comes clean and admits her lie. Interesting, Flim and Flam don’t turn over a new leaf... wow, a recurring villain. Finally. But they never have to fork over the money... that’s bad.

All in all, it was okay. I’m glad we finally get an Applejack episode that didn’t have her act like Twilight.

I think you meant 'she'.

As for the episode, I agree with you on all accounts; simple as that.

Josh Haberis the only one who can actually make Applejack episodes that are really good, and really expand on her character as it is. Now if only the DHX team would get their butts in gear and give Applejack a new character quirk or gimmick to work with.

Applejack wonders what makes the cure so effective. Gee, too bad you don’t know a talented magician/scientist who can analyze it for you.

At first, I was actually expecting her to do exactly that. Grab a bottle of the tonic, take it straight to Twilight, and say "what the hay's in this stuff?"

That would've made far too much sense though, I suppose...

I believe that the reason the writers choosed not to put Twilight in the mix was because they needed the "Rainbow Character" to be the one who moves the plot.

Who or what is the RC? Is the character in the episode that also learns a lesson about the Elements of Harmony besides the bearers themselves; Said character is also the one that gives the McGuffin key to each of the girls.

I liked the deconstruction of the "Magic feather" plot.

Personally I also liked that F&F didn't reform, however running a legit con kinda took away from their character I felt. Before they looked and sounded like shisters but actually just had poor quality control and like Iron Will were an antagonist without being a villain. Now they're just kinda cookie cutter snake oil salesmen. Just feels like flattening their characters a little.

Oh great... that means they'll probably bring Flim and Flam back again.... I can't stand those two, I almost gave up on the episode the moment I saw them, but luckily I didn't, because it was a pretty good episode. Though I would be very happy if we never saw Flim and Flam again.

Also this episode shows just how strong the placebo effect is. It can make an elderly lady like Granny Smith forget about her fear of water.

Rather then learn their lesson from last time, the Flim Flam Brothers actually got worse. Now they truly live up to their name.:ajbemused:
