Phew!
It's been a long time coming, but it's finally done.
When I first envisioned this story, it was going to be about half as long, with the finale happening around chapter 12, but the story took on a life of its own and I ran with it.
Believe it or not, The Prince and the Workhorse is my first fanfic. Not the first creative writing I've ever done, but I generally prefer to write original fiction.
Sadly, the only examples I have of my original fiction online are submissions to a round-robin style story at http://robinquest.wordpress.com/ (from which I draw my handle "Fellstorm.") I also have some original erotic fiction floating around that I will not link in this blog post (but maybe a PM could persuade me).
As my first fanfic, tPatW was as much an essay in the craft as it was a serious attempt to create a story. It gave me a chance to flex writing muscles I'd allowed to atrophy and practice doing things I'd never really tried. If I thought of something cool or funny, I threw it in. If there wasn't a place for it, I made a place for it. Not everything always worked, but it was a learning experience and I had fun with it.
I'm not using that as an excuse for any points where the fic might have faltered, but it is the explanation.
I'd like to thank all of you that commented. I really appreciate your insights and your thoughts. I took every criticism to heart. Every single one, even the ones that were maybe nothing more than "lol, this stry sux now."
There weren't really any like that, but if there were, I would have given them careful consideration. I listened to you and maybe I didn't always take your suggestions, but I got a feel for what the audience liked and didn't like, what worked and didn't work, or maybe parts of my story that didn't come across the way I hoped. I made changes accordingly and I think I ended up with a pretty strong product.
Thanks to those of you that stuck with me through to the end. I would love to hear what you have to say. Thoughts about the story. What I could have done differently, or what you might want to see next.
If you enjoyed The Prince and the Workhorse, I highly reccomend my other fic: Allen to Ashes. It features a much tighter storyline and a more polished style. Now that tPatW is done, I expect to update A2A more regularly.
Also, if there's anyone out there who is a skilled editor on TVtropes, I've kind of always dreamed that tPatW would get its own page...
Well its been quite a journey, I hope you take some time off to deflate and enjoy your victory. Whatever you decide to work on next will only be even better than the stuff you've already done.
Loved the story from beginning to end. Congrats on your first fan-fic, as far as I am concerned it was a success. Also good to hear that there will be more frequent chapters for A2A, I love it so far.
I read this story when it was first shown on EQD, and from then it was the one story I really looked forward to. It was funny, it was fresh, and it ended up not being the usual cliche filled switcheroo story! In any event Fellstorm, you wrote an awesome fic, and I hope to see more. I also love Tombs, and your fanon/canon Cadence was awesome. Thanks for great story, and an even better procrastination tool.
