Insomniac thoughts inspired by going to the CDA again. · 5:44am Apr 2nd, 2014

It feels more than a little weird to have a character actually curse. Not a pony curse: a broadcast-forbidden word. I've been dodging it since I got here and it finally happened. Local verbal virginity: lost.

Yes, in fact, I was thoroughly prepared to have people despise me this week. Also, I may not look at that Comments section for... two or three... months. Except that it's typically how I learn about the last typos. Maybe I can just find a summary...

Hey! Look at the Popular Stories column! It's an actual Pony Hitler! (Think that's an omen?)

(Seriously: this one.)

Yay. Research. Don't make me look. And I still mean the Comments section.

Do you ever feel the temptation to downvote your own story, just to get it over with?

Sleep would be nice now.

I think I'll dream of a -50 rating.

Haven't read it yet but I think you're really overreacting. It's just a swear. A combination of letters, usually four of them. If The Scent: Lust of Mares can get featured twice you aren't getting a downvote storm over a curse word.

1976224 Well, if one's existing readership isn't used to that sort of thing, one can lose people. I'm concerned about that with my current story, which was originally posted as an E-rated story, and had to be bumped up to teen, and the upcoming sequel is squeaking along the borders of mature... which I'm pretty sure is going to make some of the people who loved the first one hate the second. (And some people will downvote for very stupid reasons.)

Still, I do agree that a single curse word, especially used appropriately, is not going to cause any huge disaster.

All I really meant was that Estee is getting too worked up over this. Or he's joking and just looks serious. He has kept the language show-appropriate for the most part but I really doubt he'll see more than like two downvotes over the swear. And probably like five upvotes for the very same reason.

I haven't read the story yet, but I went a year with no real swear words in any of my stories. 2 days before Christmas I published one where 1% of the word count is a swear word. People generally liked it.

So I'm sure you'll do fine.

This is where it would have benefited me to have been awake: I might have remembered to bullet point that post. It's more of a list than a continuous flow... and with the insomnia in action, I didn't format it properly.

I retroactively expected a chance of trouble with the profanity. But the real anticipated backlash was from just having posted another CDA story. Some people hate the CDA. A lot. And nothing new which goes up makes them hate it any less.

On the plus side, I finally got to post a comment on someone else's story without getting it deleted. Benchmark!

Okay, yeah. That makes a bit more sense. Still likely to be a non issue, people are way more liberal with the upvotes than the down.

Well, I like CDA stories for what it's worth. I don't buy into the unhealthy fan idea that humans are just plain bad and ponies are always goodness *coughTCBcough*, but that's not what the CDA is saying. And if the stories focus more on the bad people from bad universes trying to slip through... well, the nice and the harmless ones don't offer that much opportunity for interesting stories.
